Executive Summary

The Problem
Solar PV gives DC Power
Solar

But load is AC
Needs a DC-AC convertor

DC

Now if we add a battery

DC-AC

Battery stores only DC

Require a AC-DC convertor for
grid

Load

Require a DC-AC convertor
during discharging

DC-AC

For low power, each convertor*

battery

can have 10 to 15% loss

Solar with battery may have 25 to
45% loss

AC to DC conversion has losses from 20% to 50% in each device

Refrigerators, air-conditioners, washing machine moving to BLDC motors

Why is Decentralized Solar important?

Grid: 4 to 9 per kWh:
Diesel generator: 24 per unit at 85% load: instantaneous
at 40% generator load, costs goes up to 34 per unit

Battery back-up: storage costs 12-15 + 5 per kWh

Solar PV: under 5 per kWh when dc is used: day time only
Conversion to AC may add 1.00 per unit; No land-cost added
