Cathy:

Responding:
My favorite sport is football.

Expressing likes and dislikes
To talk about your likes and dislikes, you can use these expressions.

VERB+ING

I don't mind

GRAMMAR ; YES-NO QUESTIONS

A. Yes/no questions
Adalah pertanyaan yang menuntut jawaban yes atau no. Jenis pertanyaan ini diawali
dengan auxiliary (is, am, are, was, were, do, does, did, have, has, had, can, may, must,
should shall, will, could, atau would).
Contoh:
1. Do you love me?
Yes, I do/No, I dont
2. Are you sleepy?
Yes, I am? No, I am not.
3. Can they climb the wall?
Yes, they can? No, yhey cant.
4. Will you help me?
Yes, I will/No, I will not.
If there is one verb in the statement and the verb is a form of be, simply switch the
positions of the subject and verb.
Statement
Question
John is a doctor.
The Jensens are here.

Is John a doctor?
Are the Jensens here?

If there are two verbs, simply switch the positions of the subject and first verb.
Statement
Question
Jan is eating dinner.
June has rented an apartment.
Jen has been living here since 1969.

Is Jan eating dinner?

Has June rented an apartment?
Has Jen been living here since 1969?

If there is one verb, and the verb is not a form of be, the process is more complex.
1. Add Do to the beginning of the sentence.
The Johnsons live in that house.
Do the Johnsons live in that house?
2. If the main verb "carries" a third person singular s, move the s to Do, making it Does.
Jane drives a car.
Do Jane drives a car? (Not finished
yet!)
Does Jane drive a car? (Good
question!)
3. If the main verb "carries" past tense, move the past tense to Do, making it Did.
Joan played basketball last night.
Do Joan played basketball? (Not finished
yet!)
Did Joan play basketball? (Good question!)

GRAMMAR ; QUESTIONS TAG AND QUESTION WORDS

1. Positive Statement
Rumus:
(+) statement, (-) tag?
a. Dengan Kata Bantu (Auxiliary)
Contoh:
You are the new secretary, aren't you? (bukan are not you?)
George can swim well, can't he?
I am going to go to the cinema with you, aren't I? (bukan amn't I)
Susie has phoned you, hasn't she?
Catatan penting:
Jika kita dapat melihat adanya kata Bantu (is, am, are, was, were, do, does, did, has,
have, had, will, would, can, could, shall, should, may, might, atau must), maka gunakan
saja kata Bantu tersebut sebagai tagnya.
Tag negative harus dibentuk dengan singkatan. Pengguaan not yang terpisah dari kata
bantunya tidak umum dalam Question tag.
Jika subjek kalimatnya I, dan kata bantunya am, maka tagnya adalah aren't I? bukan
"amn't I" sebab penyingkatan ini tidak standard dalam bahasa Inggris.
Berhati-hatilah dengan penyingkatan kata Bantu. Perhatikan contoh kalimat-kalimat
berikut ini:

She's afraid to stay alone, isn't she?

She's called the police, hasn't she?

b. Tanpa Kata Bantu (Auxiliary)

Contoh:
They invited you to their party, didn't they?
She read the novel, didn't she?
She reads the novel, doesn't she?
Somebody knocked at the door, didn't they?
You think I will be fired, don't you?
I believe you will pass the exam, won't you?
Catatan penting:
Jika tidak ada auxiliary (kata Bantu) di dalam kalimat statement-nya, maka gunakan do,
does, atau did, tergantung dari tenses-nya.
NEGATIVE STATEMENT
Rumus:
(-) Statement, (+) tag
Contoh:
There isn't any news, is there?
My parents won't go to Bali with you, will they?
Nobody wants to go with you, do they?
Everybody does not bring their homework, do they?
You never come to her dormitory, do you?

Dear Sabrina, (awal surat-ditujukan kepada siapa. Gunakan koma setelah nama yang dituju)
Please let me express my deepest sympathies to you and the children. I was shocked and
shattered when I heard about Frank's horrific accident. I can't even imagine what you have
been going through for the past ten days. (kalimat pembuka)
As you know, Frank and I have been colleagues and friends for the past eight years. His tragic
loss leaves a terrible void in our office. He was so well-liked and respected by everyone who
came into contact with him, both colleagues and clients alike. He had tremendous people skills,
and as such, was a role model in our company and the industry at large.
I trust that, when they are older, the children will be made aware of what an outstanding
13

person Frank was in his professional life.

Sabrina, please feel free to contact me if I can help in any way while you go through this very
difficult period. I will support you in any way that I can should you reach out to me. (isi surat)
Also, please tell the children how terribly devastated all of us are here at the company due too
their Father's tragic passing.
Sincere sympathy, (salam penutup)
