Where we lose
our Children?

Recently newspapers are

flooded with news that

involves teens. A Class 10
student was allegedly
murdered by his two
classmates in Kerala after a
fight that allegedly ensued
over a love affair Teenage
girls elope with fraud lovers in
Warangal. Teenagers
involved in cyber-crimes on the
rise in India. These are some
news headings from media
which shows an alarming rise
in teenage crimes and issues.
What happened to our teens?
Are they heading to ruin? The
recent incident of three school
girls who left their home and
later found dead in arailway
track raised many questions.
When we probe deep into the
issue we could find a number
of reasons behind the teenage
turmoil.
The growing digital gap
plays a villain role in ruining
our young ones. Mostly
parents are unaware of their
childrens engagement with
modern gadgets. I heard many
parents proudly say that their
young ones in LKG know to
function all menus in the
smart phones. Many parents
are ill equipped to monitor the
digital life of their kids. My
mother doesnt have a
Facebook account , I showed
my father how to send money
online I helped my Maths
teacher to download some
geometric shapes I heard
such comments from students
who utter it scornfully. The
proverb An old dog never
learns new tricks is suitable
to describe the digital
backwardness of many
parents. We cant deny the
fact that modern gadgets open
unlimited avenues for
communication,
entertainment and
information. As a coin has two
sides, the modern
technological advancement is
a boon as well as bane to our
society. The youngsters take
undue advantage of the digital
ignorance of their parents and
teachers to form love affairs,
watch pornography, use
abusive language and cyber
bullying. The recent incident
in which two school boys were
arrested to upload a just
released movie in internet
points to the fact that our

children became cyber

criminals. The cyber savvy
teens cross all barriers of
morality and integrity that the
society expects from them. The
National Crime Records
Bureau statistics (NCRB)
report published in some
newspapers indicates an
alarming rise in under-18
cyber offenders in India.
During my teaching career
in Maldives, India and U.A.E
spanning fifteen years in
College and School levels, I
came across thousands of
students belongs to different
nationalities, culture, social
and financial backgrounds.
From my observation, the
media influence plays a vital
role in the life of teens. Films,
web sites, videos, Television
and Social networks became a
part and parcel of modern life.
All these media place
youngsters in virtual world
that is away from real world.
A recently released movie in
Kerala portrays student and
teacher love affair and
students drinking liquor in a
classroom. We could assess
how much damage such
movies create on young
minds. As a result of such
influences crimes and sexual
offences increased in an
alarming rate among the
teenagers. N umber of
teenagers especially teen girls
of well to do families run
away from homes or rather
elope with their lovers. One
disturbing aspect of this trend
is that boys or men (mostly
married with children) these
teenage girls choose to elope
with and even marry. These
girls are often made to believe

brought up in a spiritual
atmosphere. They must be
God fearing and obedient to
parents, teachers and elders.

rich girl meeting a poor boy
and they getting married after
all the drama and they living
happily even after. However
the reality lies far away from
the fantasy stories of our
masala films. I remember a
shocking piece of news in
Times of India about the tragic
end of two teenage lovers who
committed suicide by
consuming poison. Both the
boy and the girl were 16 years
old and were studying in New
Model Public School in
Kathhumar village. Since their
parents did not approve of
their relationship, they eloped
and finally committed suicide.
Such teenage love tragedies
are reported from many parts
of the country and present
sleepless nights to parents of
teenagers especially girls.
Recent studies shows that
70 percent of teens go online
almost frequently facilitated
by the widespread availability
of smart phones. Teens are at
ease with technology in a way
that previous generations can

remember during my teenage
days lovers had to face
enormous difficulties to
communicate. Love affair was
really a Himalayan task in
those days. Now cyber space
is the breeding place for cyber
criminals and anti-social
elements. They brainwash
young and immature girls and
made them easy prey.
The growing criminalization
and violence among our
teenagers can be attributed to
bad influence of media, peer
influence and lack of love and
affection from parents. A news
piece in Indian Express seems
to me an incredible story but it
was a shocking reality. A Class
10 student was allegedly
murdered by his two
classmates in Kerala after a
fight that allegedly ensued
over a love affair.
The incident took place in
states northern Kasargod
district on Friday when the
victim Abhilash was returning
home from school along with
two of his classmates. On their
way back, a dispute broke out
between the three over a girl in
their class.
In the heat of the moment,
one of Abhilashs classmates

stabbed him under his eyes

with a compass. The boys
panicked and took him to a
nearby pond to wash out the
oozing blood. But instead of
washing the wound, the other
two drowned Abhilash to
death.Where we lose our
children? Whom shall we
blame? Who will be
responsible for the growing
crimes among teens? All these
pose a billion dollar question.
The need of the hour is
that, parents, teachers, elders,
authorities and society as a
whole should take the
responsibility to salvage our
teenagers from the pit falls. I
think the onus is more on
parents to take care of their
children. I have found parents
giving freedom to their children
and not realizing what they do
in their absence. Parents must
keep an eye on their children.
Many of the youngsters stay
awake in night and engage in
chatting with lovers. The
parents should not leave them
alone in the rooms and must
check whether they sleep or
doing something else in night.
Parents of teenage girls must
be in touch with their teachers
and monitor the girls without
annoying them. An
observation made by
Karnataka High Court while
considering an elopement case
is an eye opener to all.
Karnataka High Court in a
landmark judgment involving
six cases of girls over 18 but
less than 21 years who were
produced in the court was told
to go with the parents. Court
observes In our opinion, the
girls below the age of 21 years
are not capable of forming a
rational judgment. We have
seen many cases of run-away
love marriages. Majority of
cases such run away marriages
ends in tragedy and create
untold misery and hardship to
parents and girls. It is the
parents duty to discipline their
children. The role of teachers
also paramount to guide the
young generations in a right
track. The parents and teachers
must be role model for the
youngsters. If the children
receive love and affection from
family they will not get prey to
bogus love of Romeos.
Counselling facilities should be
provided in schools and
colleges.
Finally, children should be
brought up in a spiritual
atmosphere. They must be God
fearing and obedient to
parents, teachers and elders. A
family prays together will stay
together. Parents must train
their children to pray and
respect others. The parents
and teachers should strive to
inculcate moral values in
young minds .In short, parents
should spend quality time with
their children and guide them.

True Friends can be new, True Friends

can be old, and allof them are as precious
as gold.The idea or the definition of
friendship might sound simple, yet it can
be complicating and frustrating, but why
cant it be simple? The idea of friendship
varies; everyone takes friendship from a
different perspective, a different angle or
even from experience. But personally my
friendship has love but yet there is
fighting, it gives comfort but sometimes
it gives frustration, its happy and joyful,
but yet it has unhappiness and distress
in it. Something that you should be aware
of is that friendships can break, it can
cause fights and nobody is perfect so:
build a bridge and get over it.
The concept having many friends

is quite wrong. People come into the earth

disguised as angels and angels come into
the earth disguised as people. These
people and angels are said to be our
close friends. We often neglect or dont
see the significance or importance of
friendship. A major part of friendship is
being your true self and trust. Trust is
something that can take years to build
but just a matter of seconds to tear down.
One of the most beautiful qualities of true
friendship that I personally love is to be
understood and to understand. One of my
favorite friendship quotes is: Walking
with a friend in the dark is better than
walking alone in the light.
Weve all heard about the a friend
sticks closer than a brother verse. But
take time to think about it, do you have
anyone in yourlife that is like that? Its
quite true that theres a true friend that
sticks to you closely through thick and
thin.
True friendship basically depends on
acceptance. Acceptance is something that

can be hard for some. Even for me, there

used to be a girl in my class that had skin
disease. Im going to be totally honest, I
judged her by her outward appearance.
Of course I wasnt rude to her directly
but deep down I felt that sort of dislike
simmeringinside. Every time I passed by
her in the corridor I would stick close to
my friends and would not even say hi to
her. Now, I look back and realize that this
is the exact opposite of what true
friendship should be like.
Ive two BFFs. They dostick close;
theyre with me through thick and thin.
We understand, accept, listen, encourage,
comfort and forgive each other and this
is how friendship should be. Its true that
we have disagreements, arguments and
fights (its great if you can avoid it!) but
we know that we come out clean through
all this drama and come closer than
before!
When we were in 4 th grade our
classmates made fun of us by calling us
the three musketeers. We were

embarrassed. But after a while we realized

that there is absolutely nothing wrong in
calling us close!
The Ultimate friend
As the scripture says: Greater love
has no one than this, that one lay down
his life for his friends. Its true! God send
his only, beloved, precious son down to
the earth to save usfrom sin! He loves you
more than you can ever imagine! He died
just for you! Just to save you. Hes the
all-time friend. He stands by you when
the world lets you down. Hes much more
than your friend hes youre: Savior,
father, fortress, light, shade, comfort,
shelter, refuge, and strength.Hes your
everything.Do you need a friend? God
wants to be your true friend. Are you
longing for companionship? God is
always with you. Who do you know who
needs a true friend today? God wants you
to befriend others. He calls us to be his
hands and feet in a world thats starving
and craving for true friendship.
