Primus Minimal Access Surgery Centre

What is Minimal Access Surgery (MAS)?
MAS, also called keyhole surgery is a rapidly
emerging surgical technique, which is
patient friendly. MAS involves making small
incisions of about 0.5 -1cms, in contrast with
the long incisions of conventional approach.
MAS also involves looking inside a body
cavity by a telescope, through natural orifices, without making any cuts, as in Hysteroscopy
(looking inside the uterus), Cystoscopy (looking inside the urinary bladder), for diagnosis and
treatment. Main principles of time tested conventional surgery remain the same in MAS.
The difference is in the approach, which is through much smaller incisions, a 15-20 times
magnified view and easy accessibility to otherwise difficult to reach parts of the body.

What is the procedure in MAS?

Laparoscopy means visualization of abdominal cavity through a telescope. In Laparoscopy, a
small incision of 1cm is made, through which a long, thin telescope is inserted. A small video
camera, connected to the telescope, transmits images of the inside view of human body to a
screen. Depending on the type of surgery, two or three additional, 0.5cms incisions are made,
through which fine, long instruments are introduced & the required surgical procedure is
completed. Most of these procedures require general anaesthesia.
