An adequate research design presents a systematic approach for executing a study therefore, it is

highly imperative to adopt a research design that harmonizes with the aim and objectives of the
study. Majority of the researches worldwide are perfumed by the means of two research design
known as qualitative and quantitative. Qualitative research design mainly focuses upon the
perspectives of the investigator towards reality and does not involve manipulation of the
variables. This research design typically results in the collection or generation of data that cannot
be quantified. Research methods such as interviews, focus group discussions, case study analysis
and examination of past studies are based upon qualitative research design. Qualitative research
design fosters the participation of indigenous researcher in the research process. On the other
hand, quantitative research design involves the quantitative representation of the facts. The
outcomes and findings of quantitative research design are expressed in statistical format and
these measurements are used to test the hypothesis. This research design is usually employed
when the researcher aims to target a large population. However, the research design does not
necessitates active participation of the researcher while its findings and outcomes can be
replicated over larger population. Quantitative research design is generally employed when
survey are performed.
Given that the aim of this research was to identify and scrutinize the perception and
understanding of passengers regarding the security and safety measures in airport terminal
building and suggest strategies that can be employed to attain a security system that is more
efficient and passenger-friendly, the researcher utilized quantitative research design to perform
the study. The primary data was gathered through surveys that were performed with large
population of passenger disseminated worldwide. All the surveys were conducted by the means
of electronic mail services. The questions included in the questionnaire were in agreement with
the purpose of the study and facilitated the accomplishment of aim and objectives.

Benefits of Quantitative Research

Quantitative research design is useful for the studies that aim to target a large
population since this research design acquires the capacity of acquiring the views of
large number of participants.

It also acquire a greater degree of flexibility in relation to people who are positioned
at top levels

It leads to the provision of concise statistical data that can be evaluated and analyzed
easily

The advent of technologies such as e-mails has made the survey procedure less time
consuming. Moreover analysis of the data retained through this research design is
chiefly carried out through statistical software which consumes less amount of time.

The outcomes of the study can be easily interpreted by the researcher since they are in
numerical format.

In quantitative researches only testing and validating of data is carried out where as
the theories relating to the occurrence of certain phenomena are already constructed.

The researcher acquires the authority to eliminate the confounding influences of

different variables that can minimize the credibility of the study and impede the cause
and effect relationship.

Quantitative research designs are deemed to be most appropriate for the empirical
studies that tend to make quantitative predictions.

The data gathered through quantitative research design is chiefly analyzed through
statistical software therefore, study variables can be tested several times before the
presentation of actual findings.

The findings generated through quantitative research design can be replicated to a

large population since they are generalizable.

Drawbacks of Quantitative Research

The findings generated through quantitative research design are often too general and
abstract and cannot be applied directly to the explicit situations, individuals and
contexts.

In the context of quantitative research design, there is always a possibility that certain
important phenomena and elements are overlooked by the researcher since the focus
of this research design is on testing a hypothesis and theory and not on its creation.

While applying quantitative research design there is always a possibility that some of
the theories presented by the researcher fail to reflect the local constituencies belief

The questions included in the questionnaire can be too broad and beyond the
understanding of the participants responding them

The questions include in the questionnaire are mainly subjected to certain types of
scales and participants are obliged to select any one option presented on the scale as
their response. Therefore, detail explanation of an answer is not possible in
quantitative studies.

One potential drawback of quantitative research design is allied with the data
collection process. Majority of the researchers worldwide while implementing
quantitative research design prefer to conduct surveys that entail a large sample size.
However, it often becomes difficult for the researchers to maintain the track record of
all the participants and data
