Integratedelectricpropulsion(IEP)orfullelectricpropulsion(FEP)orintegratedfullelectric
propulsion(IFEP)isanarrangementofmarinepropulsionsystemssuchthatgasturbinesordiesel
generatorsorbothgeneratethreephase[1]electricitywhichisthenusedtopowerelectricmotors[2]
turningeitherpropellersorwaterjetimpellors.Itisamodificationofthecombineddieselelectricandgas
propulsionsystemforshipswhicheliminatestheneedforclutchesandreducesoreliminatestheneedfor
gearboxes[2][3]byusingelectricaltransmissionratherthanmechanicaltransmissionofenergy.

provideselectricityandanotherpoolofenginesprovidespropulsion,reducingcapitalcostsand

maintenancecosts.[1][3]
Atypicalintegratedelectricpropulsionarrangementincludesbothdieselgeneratorsandgasturbines.Theadvantagesofgasturbinesincludemuchlower
weight[1][4]andsmallersize[1]thandieselsofsimilarpower,andmuchlessnoiseandvibration,[4]buttheyareefficientonlyatornearmaximumpower.Diesel
generatorshavetheadvantageofhighefficiencyoverawiderangeofpowerlevels.Usingthemincombinationallowsforthebenefitsofafullrangeofoperational
efficiency,alowvibrationquietmodeofoperation,andsomereductioninweightandvolumerelativetoadieselonlyarrangement.Innavalvessels,apoolofdiesel
generatorsaretypicallyusedtoprovideabaseloadandenoughpowertoachievecruisespeed.Thegasturbinesareusedtoprovidepeakpowerforhigherspeeds
andmayberequiredtooperateweaponsystemswithhighpowerdemands.Inpassengerships,oneormoregasturbinesareusedforfastcruising.Thediesels
providereliableredundancyandanefficientsourceofelectricitywheninport,atanchor,ordrifting.Adieselelectricsystemisanintegratedelectricpropulsion
systeminwhichnogasturbinesareusedandalloftheenginesarediesel.Someyachtsuseonlygasturbinesforintegratedelectricpropulsionwithoutanydiesel
engines.
