ChangeFire Annual Report

2013-2014

Mission and Vision

The mission of ChangeFire is to bring together community leaders, skilled volunteers,
corporate and non-profit partners, and start-up capital in the creation of integrated Health,
Education and Energy projects that address the systemic causes of poverty.
Our vision is to see more volunteers apply more of their high level skills and recruit more
of their friends to help the projects and causes they care about most.

Mexico Programs Update

Orphanage Sustainability Initiative
Phase 1: Lower Costs. We leveraged skilled volunteers (engineers, construction
professionals, etc) to plan and install solar PV and solar thermal arrays at partnership
orphanages. These installations will save an average of 15% of yearly operating expenses
for 20-25 years allowing the directors to take dozens more kids in off the streets
immediately.

Pilot: In May 2013, ChangeFire volunteers contributed $11,400 in in-kind

volunteer hours along with $14,000 in financing to construct a solar PV array at
Casa Hogar Buena Vida in Enseada, MX. This project will save the orphanage
over $350,000 in current and future energy costs.

Phase 2: Collective Impact. ChangeFire organized the efforts of additional skilled

volunteers and partner organizations to leverage the cost savings in Phase 1 to develop
sustainable programs on-site that dramatically enrich the lives of children at the
orphanage (education, health clinic, agriculture, other social businesses)

ChangeFire is seeking $40K to develop additional solar installation projects in

Northern Baja that will save partnership orphanages a combined $750,000

ChangeFire is also seeking $20,000 in pilot funding for an organic farm project
projected to generate $25,000 in revenues per year as well as provide orphan teens
with much needed job-skills training.
Nicaragua Programs Update

Psychotherapy Training
ChangeFire funded four days of psychotherapy training at Casa Hogar Madre Albertina,
an orphanage for girls in Grenada. Designed to develop the counseling skills of the
orphanage staff, the training was conducted over four days in January by a local
psychotherapist, Jonny Hodgson. The psychotherapist charged the orphanage $500 for his

services, all of which ChangeFire subsidized. In the future, ChangeFire will recruit highskilled volunteers to assist with the continued development of staff at Casa Hogar Madre
Albertina and other orphanages in Nicaragua.
Girls arrive at Casa Hogar Madre Albertina from various situations: child labor, domestic
violence, deep poverty, sexual abuse, negligence, etc. Currently, there are 25 girls, ages
4-18, and 4 sisters on site. While most of the girls live on site, some are only there for
part of the day or week, as they have family members that take care of them for the rest
of the time.

Organic Farming Initiative

In June 2014, ChangeFire will fund an organic farming initiative for Pajarito Azul, a
Managua-based center for over 100 children and young adults with disabilities. The
project will consist of the development of an organic farm in Jinotepe and agriculturefocused capacity building for the staff and residents. The project is being executed as part
of a service trip of undergraduates from Harvard University and Tufts University. The
total cost of the sustainability project is estimated at $15,000. Funding of the project will
be a combination of a grant from the Millenium Campus Network, crowdfunding through
student networks, and in the case of a funding shortfall, up $3,000 from existing
ChangeFire funds.
The project is forecast to save Pajarito Azul $13,000 and $18,200 in its first and second
year, respectively, in food costs. This corresponds to 25% of an annual food budget of
$52,000 for the Managua center and Jinotepe farm.

Future Solar Projects

As part of ChangeFires continued orphanage sustainability initiative, initial assessment
of potential solar installs will be done during the June undergraduate service trip. The
assessment will be performed by the Managua-based solar company Suni Solar and
engineering students from Tufts University. Currently, the energy costs of Casa Hogar
Madre Albertina are about $370 a month, representing the largest monthly expense and
making the orphanage a potential prime location for a cost-effective solar install. A longterm fundraising and implementation strategy will be developed after the trip.
