John Monnett's EAA Sport Aviation Hall of Fame Keynote Address Video Online
 
Sonex Aircraft, LLC Founder and President John Monnett was given the
honor of presenting the keynote address at the 2008 EAA Sport
Aviation Hall of Fame Induction ceremony. Himself a 2001 EAA
Homebuilder's Hall of Fame Inductee, John spoke of the wonderment
of aviation and the EAA, the need for the recruitment of more new
pilots, the ever increasing need for more efficient aircraft, and the
need for EAA to embrace soaring as an addition to its many diverse

"Louisville man builds his own plane"

Sonex builder Bob McGrath (Sonex S/N 692) of Louisville, Ohio was recently featured in the Canton
newspaper, The Repository. At 86 years-old, Bob fulfilled his life-long dream of building an aircraft
with his Sonex project. Bob and his wife Eleanor plan to use the Sonex to visit family and friends in
Vermont, Phoenix and Idaho.

 August 2008: AirVenture Today 
Big Aviation checks out AirVenture
by Peter S. Lert 
GE is sharing the EAA AirVenture Oshkosh story with hundreds of thousands of visitors to its website
in a specially produced video now featured on the corporation’s home page (www.ge.com). The 6-
minute video describes the “innovation treasure hunt” conducted by several GE and Airbus engineers
who visited AirVenture this past summer. Featured in the "Innovation" portion of the video is the E-
Flight electric-powered Waiex, which was on-display in the EAA Welcome Center. The video is
scheduled to remain on the GE home page until October 24th.
 
An article about the GE and AI engineers' AirVenture explorations published in the August 2 edition
ofAirVenture Today shows that the group found inspiration not-only in the E-Flight electric Waiex,
but also in the Xenos Motorglider and in Sonex Founder and President John Monnett's role as an
"inspirational pioneer" in aviation innovation.

"Motivated by Madison: Building a Mini-Waco" by Andrew Maitland.

Andy Maitland of Cranberry, PA built a 3/4 Scale Cabin Waco powered by an AeroConversions
AeroVee Engine. Maitland reports cruise speeds of approximately 85 mph, max speed approximately
90 mph, and climb rates of approximately 1,000 fpm single pilot. Empty weight quoted in Sport
Aviation article is incorrect: actual empty weight is 780 lbs according to builder. The aircraft was

rewarding flying experience of Austin, MN Xenos builder Craig Jones. Jones' Xenos (S/N 11) is the
first customer-built Xenos to fly.
 July 2007: Kitplanes Magazine
"Designer Spotlight: John Monnett" by Tim Kern.
A 7-page feature article as part of Kitplanes "Designer Spotlight"
series, packed with historical photographs covering Sonex Aircraft LLC
Founder and President John Monnett's career from Sonerai to Sonex.
Incidentally, "From Sonerai to Sonex" is the proposed title of a John
Monnett biography, written by Sonex Builder Jim Cunningham, which
is scheduled for publication later this year.

contained a lot of positive information, Sonex Aircraft, LLC disagrees with some of the negative

"AeroVee: grandson of the VW, and a highly refined conversion"; Engine Beat column by
Tim Kern.
Kitplanes powerplant columnist Tim Kern reviews the history of VW conversions and the AeroVee,
lists the AeroVee's advantages over the competition and explains why the engine dominates the VW
conversion market. Kern also gets a "scoop" on the release of AeroVee 2.0
 
 January-February 2007: Recreational FlyerMagazine
AeroCarb customer Owen MacPherson wrote an article featured in the January-February 2007 issue
ofRecreational Flyer, the official magazine of the Recreational Aircraft Association Canada. The article
features the AeroCarb, clarifying many of the common concerns about slide-type carburators,
highlighting the unit's simple and reliable operation, and MacPherson's great satisfaction with the
AeroCarb, which has over 300 hours flown over 5 years on his VW conversion. The article also
features two sidebars. One is an interview with Sonex Aircraft, LLC founder and President John
Monnett discussing the AeroCarb and the future of the AeroConversions product line. The other
sidebar features customer Gerry Younger, and his positive experience flying the AeroCarb on his 0-
200 powered aerobatic clip wing Cub, which is equipped with inverted fuel and oil systems.

 January 2007: Sonex Named ANN's Best Sport Pilot Kit


The aviation news web site Aero-News.net has awarded Sonex Aircraft, LLC with the distinction of
"Best of Breed" for 2006 in the category of Sport Pilot qualified aircraft kits! Aero News Network
expanded its 2006 Best of Breed awards to include awards in five categories: GA Piston Single, GA
Piston Twin, SA Experimental Kit, E-LSA Kit, and S-LSA Ready To Fly.
 
Aero News editors regarded the award for Sonex Aircraft as a "fairly easy choice this time, despite
this category being populated by some truly outstanding aircraft," citing the aircraft's "simplicity of
construction, playful nature and foremost -- its amazing affordability," as the major factors meriting
the award.

"A Red-Hot Waiex" by Jim Busha. The first customer-built Waiex to
be completed and flown, Drew Waterworth's S/N 24, is featured in
an 11-page feature article in the October issue of EAA's Sport
Aviation magazine. The article, titled "A Red-Hot Waiex", includes
many beautiful photographs of Drew's custom Apple Kandy Red
paint job with iridescent prismatic flames.

"Simple Flying; a Cross Country Learning Experience" by Kerry Fores.
Sonex employee Kerry Fores and his Metal Illness (Sonex S/N 0009)
is featured as the cover story of EAA Sport Pilot magazine, chronicling
his flight to Sun 'n Fun 2006 in "Simple Flying; a Cross Country
Learning Experience" (page 34), an abridged version of Kerry's
article "Sun and Fun in a Sonex" (1.1mb PDF file). His panel was also
used to illustrate a story about electronic engine information systems
such as the Grand Rapids EIS (page 44).

 July 2006: EAA Sport Aviation Magazine


"Sonex's Stars Stand for Happy Kids" by Ron Dorner. Sonex pilot Marty Smiltneek (Sonex S/N 0173)
was featured in the July issue of EAA Sport Aviation magazine, in "Sonex's Stars Stand for Happy
Kids" (page 93). Ron Dorner, a member of Marty's EAA chapter 320, wrote the article detailing
Marty's tradition of allowing kids who sit in his aircraft to place a colored star on his Sonex tail, which
is now festooned with stars. The article also describes Marty's Jabiru 3300 powered Sonex and the
design's outstanding performance.

 May 2006: Sun and Fun in a Sonex 


Kerry Fores, Sonex employee and builder of Sonex SN# 9 flew his
aircraft to Sun 'n Fun 2006 from our factory in Oshkosh, WI. Read all
about his adventures in his article Sun and Fun in a Sonex (1.1mb PDF
file). This is a must-read for anyone interested in the cross-country
capabilities of Sonex aircraft!
 May 2006: Opening the Envelope
Bill Brown, builder of Sonex SN# 642 has been exploring the
aerobatics envelope in his aircraft. A member of EAA chapter 25 in
Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN, Bill wrote an article about aerobatics in the
Sonex for the May, 2006 edition of the chapter's newsletter On Final.
Bill's article Opening the Envelope (956kb PDF file) is a good account
of his experiences.
