TheUniversitdegliStudidiNapoliFedericoIIhasopenedthecallforthePhDprogramsofthe31stcycle
(20152016). The Admission to the PhD Programs will be on a competitive basis. The selection of the
candidateswillbebasedontheevaluationoftheirCVs,writtentestsand/orinterviews,aspublishedin
theattachmentAEngl.Therein,foreachPhDProgramthefollowingitemsarelisted:

a) Thecriteriaofselection;
b) Thenumberoftheopenpositions;
c) Thenumberofscholarships;
d) The number of positions (with or without scholarship) if any reserved to candidates not
residentinItalyandeducatedabroad;
e) Thenumberofpositionsifanyreservedtostudentswithscholarshipgrantedfromaforeign
Country,orstudentsinvolvedwithscholarshipwithininternationalmobilityprograms;
f) the duration, the possible associated Institutions/Companies, the department which
administrativefunctionsareassignedto,andtheCoordinatorofthePhDprogram;
g) the address where applicants must deliver or send their documents and assessments, and
timetableoftheexams;
h) thewebpageaddressofthePhDcourse,whichprovidesthecandidateswithinformationabout
theorganization,researchtopicsandeducationalactivities.

The timetables reported in the announcement (see attachment AEngl) should be considered as an
official notification to applicants, who will not receive any further written notice about the
examinations.

REQUIREMENTSFORTHEADMISSION

To apply to the above Research Doctorate Programs candidates (with no restriction about age and
citizenship)shouldhaveobtainedoneofthefollowingdegrees,bythedeadlineofthiscall:

- master degree, according to the Italian Ministerial Decree nr. 509/1999 and its subsequent
modificationsandintegrations("laureaspecialistica"or"laureamagistrale");
- academicdegree,accordingtotheItalianpreviousacademicsystem("laurea"),wherethelegal
courselastedforatleastfouryears;
- anequivalentdegreeobtainedfromaforeignuniversity.

CandidateswhowillobtaintheirdegreebyOctober31,2015mayapplytoo.Insuchacase,applicants
willbeadmittedconditionally,andtheyhavetodeliveraprovisionaldegreecertificatetotheUniversit
degliStudidiNapoliFedericoII,byNovember10,2015.
Theequivalenceofthedegreeofthecandidatesgraduatedabroadwillbeascertainedonthebasisof
thedocumentsattachedbythecandidatetotheapplicationform.
This requirement is not needed if the degree has been already declared equivalent to an Italian
academicdegreebyvirtueofagreementsbetweenItalyandtheforeignCountrywherethedegreewas
obtained.

ADMISSIONTOTHESELECTIONFORRESERVEDPOSITIONS

The selection for positions reserved to foreign candidates graduated abroad, or to students with
scholarshipsgrantedbyaforeignCountry(orstudentsinvolvedininternationalmobilityprograms),will
bebasedonboththeassessmentofthequalificationsandaninterview:specificmeritrankingswillbe
compiledforthisselection.

Candidatesforreservedpositionsmustattachtotheirapplicationsthefollowingdocuments:

1. certificateofthemasterdegreewiththefinalmarksandtheacademiccurriculum,reportingthe
examinationspassed,theirmarks,andashortdescriptionoftheircontents.Ifthesedocuments
areinalanguageotherthanItalian,English,French,SpanishorGerman,theymustbetranslated
intooneoftheabovementionedlanguagesandthetranslationmustbecertifiedandlegalizedas
atruecopy;
2. anyfurtherqualification(grants/scholarships,certificatesofattendanceinpostdegreecourses,
researchactivities,scientificpublications,marksscoredinstandardnationalorinternational
teststobeadmittedtoacademiccourses,etc.);
3. recommendationletters;
4. curriculumvitae.

Moreover,applicantsforpositionsreservedtostudentswithscholarshipgrantedfrom
aforeignCountryorstudentswithscholarshipinvolvedwithininternationalmobility
programsmustattach,underpenaltyofexclusion,totheirapplicationsthedocuments
concerningtheirscholarship.

Applicants for reserved positions will take the oral examination by video conference (e.g. Skype, or
similar),producingalegallyvalididentitydocument.

APPLICATIONS

InordertoaccesstheprocedureinitsEnglishversion,foreignapplicants
arekindlyinvitedtosettheirbrowserinalanguagedifferentfromItalian:
insuchawayalltheinformationwillappearinEnglish.

Candidates,whoarenotresidentinItaly,andnotpossessingItaliancitizenship,
areexemptedfromthepaymentoftheexaminationfee.

Theapplicationformmustbefilledinexclusivelyonline,byandnolaterthan12.00a.m.(Italiantime)
ofSeptember8st,2015.

Bythisdeadlinetheonlineformwillberemoved,andanyfillingandprintingwillbenolongerpossible.

Having not filled and/or sent the application form within the deadline and according to the correct
procedureswillcauseexclusionfromthecompetitiveexaminations.

To fill in the application form on line, candidates who are not resident in Italy, and do not possess
Italian citizenship (exempted from the payment of the examination fee) must comply two different

EXAMINATIONSFORADMISSIONTORESEARCHDOCTORATEPROGRAMS

Theexaminationsareaimedtoattainacomparativeevaluationofthecandidates,andtoassesstheir
knowledgeandaptitudesforthescientificresearch.

Selectionsfornotreservedpositionswillbebasedon:

a) assessmentofthequalifications,andwrittenandoralexaminations
or
b) assessmentofthequalifications,andoralexamination.

Moreover,allthecandidatesmustproveagoodknowledgeofItalianand/oraforeignlanguage(English,
French, Spanish and German). (Only for the Doctorate program in Physics, English language will be
mandatoryforthistest).

Alltheexamscanbetakeninoneoftheabovementionedlanguages.

Requiredqualificationsandsubjectsoftheexamsmustpertaintheframeofscientificinterestofeach
Doctorateprogram:theycoulddifferdependingonthefieldsofinterestoftheDoctorateprogramitself.

TheBoardofExaminerscanassignatotalamountof100marks.

itema)Incasetheselectionisbasedontheassessmentofthequalifications,followedbywritten
andoralexamination,themarkswillbeassignedasherestated:amaximumof10,fortheassessment
of the qualifications; a maximum of 30, for the written examination; a maximum of 60, for the oral
examination.
Qualificationswillbeassessedinagreementwiththeratingreported,asfollows:

academic career: final degree grade (provided they are pertaining to the required
qualifications) or grade point average (based on the formative credits) of the marks of the
passedexaminations:amaximumof6;
scientificpublicationsandotherqualifications:amaximumof4(there,nomorethan1can
be awarded on the basis of recommendation letters by teachers/experts, or for other
pertainingqualificationssuchasprizes,patents,fellowships).

Tobeadmittedtothewrittenexam,thecandidatemustobtainnolessthan4/10intheassessmentof
his/herqualifications.

Thewrittenexaminationwillconsistinprovidingawrittentextonasubjectchosenamongthatones(at
leastthree)proposedbytheBoardofExaminers.

To be admitted to the oral exam, the candidate must pass the writtenexamination with no less than
18/30.

Topasstheoralexam,thecandidatemustgetatleast36/60.

qualificationsandoralexamination,themarkswillbeassignedasherestated:amaximumof20forthe

ToevaluatethecandidatesforreservedpositiontheBoardofExaminersisprovidedwithamaximumof
40markstoassessthequalifications,andwithamaximumof60marksfortheoralexam.

Inordertoassessthequalifications,theBoardofExaminerswillevaluate:

academicdegreesandqualificationsofthecandidate

scientificpublications

scholarships/fellowships,andcertificatesconfirmingtheattendanceofpostgraduatecourses

allthequalificationsrelatedtoresearchactivities

recommendationlettersbyteachers/experts

Tobeadmittedtotheoralexam,thecandidatemustobtainnolessthan24/40marks.

Topasstheoralexam,thecandidatemustobtainatleast36/60marks.

Thefinalscorewillcorrespondtothesumofthemarksassignedintheassessmentofthequalifications,
writtenexamination(ifrequired),andoralexamination.

Candidates not resident in Italy and educated abroad, applying for reserved positions, may be
interviewedbyvideoconference(e.g.,Skype).

The final score will be the sum of the marks the candidate has obtained in the assessment of the
qualifications,inthewrittenexam,intheoralexam.

To take the examinations, candidates will produce one the following legally valid identity document:
identitycard,passport,drivinglicense.

Thecandidatewillbeconsideredasarenouncer,ifshe/he,foranyreason,willbeabsentontheday,
placeandtimescheduledfortheexaminations.

MERITRANKINGLISTS

DoctorateResearchProgramsofferingpositionswillhavetwodistinctmeritrankinglists:onefornot
reservedpositions,asecondoneforreservedpositions.

Candidateswillbeorderedinthefinallistsbyfollowingthedecreasingorderofthesumoftheirmarks.
In the case of parity in marks between two or more candidates, precedence is given to the youngest
candidate.

SelectedcandidateswillbeadmittedtothechosenDoctorateProgramonthebasisoftheirstandingsin
therankinglistuntilallthepositionsavailable,withandwithoutgrants,havebeenfilled.

Shouldanyreservedposition,withandwithoutgrants,remainvacant,itcouldbeusedtoincreasethe
numberofthenotreservedones(andviceversa).

IfacandidateeligiblefortheenrolmentinaDoctorateProgramdoesnotsubmither/hisacceptance
within 10 days from the date of the publication of the final results of the competition or, in case of
renouncementwithin60daysfromthebeginningofthedoctoratecourses,thepositionwillbeassigned
tothecandidatewhofollowsher/himintherankinglist.

ENROLMENTPROCEDURE

CompetitiondeedsareapprovedbytheRectorwhodecreestheresultsoftheselectionwithin30days
from the date of the oral examinations. These lists will be published in the Official Register of the

Together with the enrolling form, a photocopy of an identity document (duly undersigned) and one
passportsizephotographymustbeattached.

EnrollingPhDstudentsnotsupportedbygrantmustalsoenclosethereceiptconfirmingthepaymentof
registration fees and contributions: amounts and modalities will be published on the same University
website.Thedeadlineforthepaymentofthesefeesissetatthe15thdayfollowingthelastusefulday
for enrolment. Students not fulfilling such requirements will be no longer enrolled in the Doctorate
Program.

STUDENTGRANTS

Thescholarshipswillbeconferredbyfollowingtheorderinthefinalranking,untilfullcoverageofthe
availablepositions.

Forthesolepurposeoftheassignmentofscholarships,incaseofparityinmarksbetweentwoormore
candidates,precedencewillbegiventothecandidatewithalowerincome(theeconomicalstatusofthe
candidateswillbeevaluatedwiththesameproceduresadoptedfortheenrolmentfeesofthestudents.)

Scholarships have a yearly duration: they will be renewed on the condition that the PhD student has
completedtheprogramscheduledforthepreviousyear,andthathehasbeenadmittedtothefollowing
one.

Theannualscholarshipamountsto13.638,47Euros,includingsocialwelfarecharges.Thegrantcovers
theentiretimedurationofthedoctorateprogram.

Theinstalmentswillbecreditedmonthly,bypostponedpayments.PhDstudentswithapersonalincome

exceeding13.638,47Euros(countedoutthescholarshipitself)cannotbetherecipientsofthegrant.

Theamountofthescholarshipisincreased,toamaximumextentof50%,forperiodsthePhDstudent
spends abroad, for no more than 18 months. This increase will be not supplied for periods the PhD
studentwillspendinher/hisownCountry,orintheCountryinwhichshe/hehastheresidence.

ScholarshipsalreadycreditedtoPhDstudentsexceedingtheaforesaidyearlyincomemustbegivenback
totheUniversity.ThesameifthePhDstudentdoesnotfulfiltherequirementstatedbelow(seesection
onRightsandObligationsofDoctorateStudents),

WhoeverhasalreadyreceivedastudentgrantforaResearchDoctorateProgram,evenforonehalfof
thetotaldurationofthePhDcourse,cannotapplyforanewgrantasecondtime.

The grants can not be added up to other scholarships, except those ones from national or foreign
institutions,tointegratetrainingorresearchactivitiesabroad.

Scholarships will be credited according to the actual periods of attendance to study and research
activities.

Starting from the second year of the PhD course, in addition to the scholarship (and limited to the
availabilityofresourcesinthefinancialbudgetoftheuniversity)anextrabudgetwillbeassignedtothe
PhDstudent,tosupporther/hisresearchactivitiesinItalyandabroad:thisbudgetwillbedependenton
the typology of the PhD program, and anyhow it will be no less than the 10% of the PhD scholarship
amount.

In the act of enrolling, who is eligible for a grant must present a declaration about presumed gross
personal income and absence of the above mentioned incompatibilities. Such a declaration must be
reaffirmedatthebeginningofeachsubsequentacademicyearofattendanceoftheResearchDoctorate
Program. Moreover, students supported with grants must provide themselves with a Gestione
separataposition,toberegisteredatINPS(theItalianNationalSocialSecurityInstitute).

FEESANDCONTRIBUTIONS

StudentsenrolledatResearchDoctorateProgramsarerequiredtopay,foreachyearofcourse,feesand
contributions equal to those paid by undergraduate students of this University. Doctorate students
supported by scholarships are exempted from the aforesaid payments, except from the contribution
(studyduty)tobeassignedtotheRegioneCampania.

RIGHTSANDOBLIGATIONSOFDOCTORATESTUDENTS

AttendingaPhDcourseimpliesanexclusiveandfulltimeengagement.Doctoratestudentsareobligedto
attendandundertakeallthescheduledactivities,topresentalltheoralandwrittenreportsrequired,
andcarryoutwhatsoeveritisestablishedbytheAcademicBoardoftheResearchDoctorateProgram.

AttheendofeachacademicyeartheAcademicBoard,onthebasisofadetailedreportoftheactivities
andresearchcarriedoutbyeachdoctoratestudent,willdeliberateuponadmissiontothenextyear,or

willproposetotheRectorher/hisexclusionfromtheResearchDoctorateProgram.

At theendof the Doctorate program, the PhD students must submit to the AcademicBoard a report
concerningalltheactivitiestheyattendedto,andtheirpublications,ifany.

Contemporary attendance at the Research Doctorate Program and at any other university course is
forbidden.

StudentsenrolledinaResearchDoctorateProgrammayrequestsuspensionfromattendingthecourses
formaternity,seriousillness,civilservice(forthislastoccurrence,nomorethan1year).TheAcademic
Boardwilltakenoteofthesesuspensions.

Suspension with a duration more than 30 days obliges the PhD students to recover all the time
corresponding to the interruption of their academic activities; additionally, for PhD students granted
withscholarship,thissuspensionentailsthecessationofthegrantpaymentfortheperiodinvolved.

The entire duration of the PhD course cannot be reduced due to these suspensions: thus, the
completionofthecoursewillbedeferredforacorrespondingtime.

PhD students are allowed to carryout her/hisactivitiesabroad, for aperiod no longer asa whole
than 18 months. In such a case, the authorization by the Academic Board will be needed, and the
previous consent by their supervisors. For periods no longer as a whole of 6 months, it will be
sufficienttheauthorizationbythePhDcoordinator,andthepreviousconsentbythesupervisor.

DEGREEOFRESEARCHDOCTORANDPHDTHESIS

The degree of Research Doctor (in its shorted Italian form Dott. Ric., corresponding to Ph.D.) is
obtained by passing the final examination, i.e. defending a PhD thesis at the end of the Research
DoctorateProgram.TheRectorconfersitinconformitywiththeuniversityregulations.

ThefinaldissertationcanbewritteninEnglish,orinadifferentlanguage,withthepreviousapprovalof
theAcademicBoard.

By30daysafterthediscussionofthePhDtheses,theUniversitywillrecordthemaselectronicfiles
intheMIUR(ItalianMinistryforUniversityandResearch)database.
TheUniversityofNaplesFedericoIIuploadsthefulltextofthePhDthesesonitsOpenArchive,witha
freeinternetaccess.TheUniversityalsoprovidestotransferthePhDthesestotheNationalLibrariesof
RomeandFlorence.
OndulyjustifiedrequestbythePhDstudent,theAcademicBoardcouldallowtoinhibitpartsofthePhD
thesistotheopenaccess,sothatdatacoveredbyindustrialsecretcannotbeconsultedforacertain
periodbythirdparties.

ACCESS,TREATMENTOFPERSONALDATAANDRESPONSIBLEOFTHEPROCEDURE

All the candidates are allowed to require an access to the procedures related to the competitive
examinations,withintheframeofrulesandcriteriastatedintheUniversityRegulationabouttheright

tobeinformedonitsadministrativeacts.

TheUniversitywilltakecaretorespecttheprivacyonthepersonaldataofthecandidates.

TheChiefoftheOfficeforDoctorateprograms,FellowshipsandScholarshipsattheUniversityofNaples
Federico II is the responsible about any fulfilment of the here announced competitive examinations,
apartthoseactswhicharecompetenceoftheBoardsofExaminers.
