METAMORPHOSIS

a work-in-progress by in situ:

THE PERFORMERS:
All the performers in this piece have attended in situ:'s acting classes over the last year, working on improvisation,
voice, movement and text-interpretation. Metamorphosis is the first performance the group has given to an outside
audience, and is thus a very important stepping-stone.

The performers are:

Richard Hare
Paresh Jogia
Suzanne Fergus
Csilla Zsok
Andrew Smith
Ed Bray
Maria Brandl
Elske Janssen
John Sargeant

directed by: Richard Spaul

THE TEXTS:
Each performer has chosen a short text. Each text has some connection with our theme of Metamorphosis
(Change/Transformation). Some are about the transformation from animal to human, some the change from life to
death, or (in the case of the butternut squash!) the change from raw to cooked, while others are concerned with violent
changes to the personality, or social and political change. But apart from this common theme, they have no narrative
connection with one another. So don't look for a storyline. There isn't one.

The texts are:

A Clockwork Orange Anthony Burgess

The Legend of the Three Sisters Traditional Native Australian
I have a Dream Martin Luther King
(music: 'Strange Fruit', sung by Nina Simone)
Holy Longing Johann Wolfgang Goethe
The Prince Machiavelli
(with additional text by George Bernard Shaw)
Metamorphosis Franz Kafka
Butternut Squash Soup The Covent Garden Book of Soups
Do not stand at my Grave and weep Mary Frye
Saint Animal Chase Twichell

THE PERFORMANCE:
One of our main subjects this term has been The Voice and how to get the most out of it in performance. We've worked
on the speaking voice and how it can be used to interpret a text, but we've also worked more widely on vocal sound,
exploring how atmosphere can be created by the use of breath, rhythm, timbre and pitch, and seeing what happens when
the extreme depths and heights of the voice are sounded.
We've also worked on movement and on ensemble skills (the ability to perform well together).
We've tried to find something special in each of the pieces chosen and have worked to heighten that in performance. It
may be a particular image, a striking use of the voice, or the invoking of a particular atmosphere.

The performance lasts approximately one hour. There is no interval.
