PSYCHOLOGY 110
Homework #6
Provide brief, but thorough, responses to the following questions. Answer in
complete sentences.
(You can use this page or a separate document/sheet of paper to TYPE your
responses.)

1. Choose EITHER the defining attribute model, the prototype model, or

the exemplar model of organizing information. Identify one advantage and
one disadvantage of this model.
The exemplar model is a way to categorize and stereotype people and
memories by judging mew memories on memories that already exist.
An example of the exemplar model would be if you only knew large
bodies of waters of oceans, so when you see a large lake, you think it is
an ocean. An advantage to this is that you are using already formed
memories, however the disadvantage to this is that if the memories
that are already formed are wrong, the whole categorization process
would be wrong.

2. Explain the difference between System 1 and System 2 with respect

to decision-making.*
System 1 decision making is rather rash and a quick decision, while
system 2 thinks about the future and the consequences of their
actions.
3. Define schema and provide an example.
A schema is a way of organizing information. An example would be
learning that the big, four-legged mammal is a horse. You might then
see a cow and automatically think the animal is a horse.
4. Below are the stages in Piagets model of cognitive development. Identify (1)
the ages that correspond to each stage, AND (2) one key characteristic
(difficulty OR ability that develops).
a. Sensorimotor 0-2 years; object permanence
b. Preoperational 2-7 years; symbolic thinking
c. Concrete Operational 7-12 years; conservation of matter
d. Formal operational 12+; hypothetical and abstract thinking and
reasoning

5. Define identity, and describe one major influence on identity during
adolescence.
A persons identity are the things in their life that give them their
originality. This could be aspects such as interests, choices, values,
beliefs, appearance, habits and ethnicity. Some aspects that could be a
major influence on identity during adolescence are the culture they are
in, their parents and friends, and even their gender.

6. Choose one aspect of adulthood (early, middle, or late) that interests you,
and explain why.
One aspect of adulthood that interests me is the switch in their life
from being a dependent individual to independent. This interests me,
partly, because I will be soon going through this change, but also
because it is such a large difference from depending on your parents to
being the sole provider for yourself. Im sure there is a tremendous
strain emotionally on a person going through this, so Id be interested
to see how exactly that kind of change affects someone.
