API connections are fully standardized and regulated by API Spec 5B. These
connections cover the low end of the market, meaning that they are used in wells
with reduced mechanical loads and with non-problematic environments. Therefore
these connections have a simple design, no sophisticated features and they are
easy to manufacture and run.

Round thread connections receive their name from their V-shaped profile, where
the crest and roots have been rounded. This is a very simple thread with flank
angles of 30. When the pin threads engage the box threads, they make contact
at the flanks, leaving a space between the crests and the roots.
The advantages of this connection are the ease to manufacture and its runability.
Only torque control is necessary. Moreover, due to the tight contact between the
box and pin thread flanks, it has a comparatively good response for liquid
sealability.
On the other hand, the main disadvantages for these connections are the poor
tensile resistance and the poor sealability for medium or high pressure gases.
As API Round threads had limited tension resistance, especially in large diameters,
it was necessary to improve their performance. This led to the development of the
Buttress thread. The Buttress has a trapezoidal shape with different stabbing and
load angles.
Connections with Buttress threads have a tension resistance that is similar or
higher than the tension resistance of the pipe body, but as the gaps between the
engaged flanks are wider than those of the Round thread, the sealability response
is worse in the Buttress. The advantages of the Buttress connection are the ease to
manufacture and its runability keeping its high tensile resistance; while the main
disadvantage is its poor sealability.
