THE PARADE 2009-2010

Inside you’ll find the announcement and information for our St Patrick’s Board of Directors
Parade celebration at the University Club. If you have not already done so, you
should really, really think about joining in the fun. It is the 60th annual parade

for the City of Albany and the Irish heritage has never been in short supply or President
shy. The festival atmosphere of the street, the spontaneity of the crowd and the Tom Pandick
dedication of the marchers to step lively and smile the entire length of the route
are legendary. The music of the bands and the pipers, the floats, the politicians, Vice President
the fire engines, the veterans and, most important, the Irish ancestors are all Warren Abriel
part of the tradition. The unique part of the parade for you is that inside the Secretary
Club House is the chance to share the day, the laughter, the drink and the food Pat Conole
with your family and friends. And, what better place to “view” the parade and
all the shenanigans then from our lawn, our street corner or our living room Treasurer
(and don’t forget to wear your UClub hat so that we can find you in the Gene Farley
crowd). When it comes to having a good time it doesn’t get much better than Past President

Inside you’ll find an article from the Membership Committee noting the Cal Berger
continued need for new members in the Club and reminding us that together, Kevin Clancy
we can make a difference. While this should not be a surprise, it is a necessity Gene Hallock
that we be constantly reminded. Certainly the betterment of the Club should be

roster, but it never hurts to have a financial incentive to do so as well. So the Nate Maloney
Board, last Tuesday, adopted the recommendation of Membership Co-Chair Frank Nemeth
Matt Badalucco that you receive a monetary award for each new member Bill Ross
joining the Club for which you are the primary sponsor (meaning the first of Hal Williams
the two required sponsors). Effective immediately, each time you are the prime
sponsor of a new member you will receive a credit on your bill equal to one
month’s of dues and assessments for that new member. If you sponsor a
Resident, the current credit to you would be $164. If you sponsor a Corporate, INSIDE…
the credit would be up to $376. Get the picture? What could be better, and

Jeff Strange returns to the U Club for an evening of Oldies music and Irish tunes Friday,
March 5th from 8-10 PM. If you were here in September, you know he puts on a great show.
If you missed him, stop by & find out what you’re missing! Get some friends together, have

This After 1st Friday event is sponsored by the University Club Foundation as part of its
mission to increase its community visibility and involvement as well as that of the Club.

The 60th Annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade will be on Saturday, March 13th this year.
It passes right by the club on Washington Avenue so we have prime viewing space! Join
us for the parade and a corned beef and cabbage buffet. The bar opens at noon and the
Buffet starts at 1:00 p.m. Adults $14; kids $7 (beverages additional). The parade begins
at 2:00 p.m. at Quail & Central. Bring the family! It’s a lot of fun for everyone. THIS IS
A VERY POPULAR EVENT! RESERVATIONS ARE ABSOULTELY NECESSARY! Call the club at
least 24 hours in advance at 463-1151. Plan to arrive early to beat the street closures and parking crunch!

Dr. Nancy L. Zimpher, the 12th Chancellor of the State University of New York, will address the Albany
Roundtable on Wednesday, March 10 at 12:30 pm. She will discuss the Public Education Empowerment and
Innovation Act and SUNY's strategic plan. All are welcome. Hot & cold buffet at noon. $15 per person. For

Make plans to join us for a very special 1st Friday on April 2nd, as The University Club
Foundation presents Sonny & Perley in conjunction with The Albany Institute of History & Art.
Sonny & Perley, a husband and wife team voted "Best Jazz Standards Duo" by Metroland, will
perform three fabulous sets of Great American Songbook Standards and International Cabaret -
from 6:00 - 7:00 p.m. at the Albany Institute, and from 8:00 - 10:00 p.m. at the University
Club. On the first Friday of each month, the Albany Institute remains open until 8:00 p.m. and
admission to their galleries is free as part of the downtown arts walk that showcases the thriving art scene in
downtown Albany. The Hartford Courant calls Sonny & Perley "a tight jazz duo with a richly varied musical
turf," and we hope you'll take advantage of this unique opportunity to hear them at the Institute & the club.

Invite your friends & family to celebrate Easter, Sunday, April 4th, at the Club. Mixed Green
Salad, Roast Prime Rib, Baked Virginia Ham, Shrimp Primavera, Cajun Bluefish, Chicken
