THE UTC-GATP SELECTION COMMITTEE WILL NOT SEE ANY OF
YOUR FILES UNTIL YOUR APPLICATION IS COMPLETE.

Early Decision Option: Deadline Dec 1

st

Following the deadline for early admission, the selection committee, which is
comprised of four GATP faculty members and one clinical athletic training staff,
will evaluate and rate each applicant. Once applicants files have been reviewed,
selected applicants will be notified of invitation into the program.

Standard Admission
The UTC-GATP has a rolling admission process in which we accept applications
until all seats for the cohort have been filled. Applicants are strongly encouraged
to submit all application materials as soon as possible. Generally, the cohort is
complete around March. The current cohort consists of 16 positions.

Applicants will be ranked on the following criteria:

Overall GPA and Advanced Academic Preparation GPA (high level science and math)

GRE scores

Letters of recommendation

Completion of all prerequisites and other application materials

*The committee reserves the right to interview each applicant via Skype or phone
on a case-by-case basis.

After the early decisions have been processed, applicants with higher scores on
the above criteria may receive recommendation for admission into the GATP as
soon as their application has been reviewed, which will be done on a monthly
basis. Once an applicant becomes a candidate for admission, a reply must be
received by the GATP within two weeks of candidate notification. In the case
when either the candidate does not reply, or declines admission, that position in
the cohort becomes vacant, and the next candidate, in order of rank will be
notified.
Candidates not accepted into the GATP will receive written notification from the
Graduate School.

Campus Visits
Eligible applicants are strongly encouraged to attend one of the two campus
visits, one in the Fall semester, and one in the Spring. The visit is not required,
but a good opportunity for applicants to see the campus and our facilities, and
meet faculty, staff, and current students. The visit also gives the opportunity for
faculty and current students to make a personal connection with prospective
students. Once an application has been received, and meets our criteria, the
applicant will be notified of the campus visit dates.

The Department of Kinesiology offers a Master of Science in Athletic Training (M.S.A.T.) degree that is designed to prepare persons
to sit for the National Athletic Trainers Association Board of Certification (BOC) Examination and earn the credentials as a Certified
Athletic Trainer (ATC).

Application Requirements
In addition to the admission requirements set forth by The Graduate School, applicants to the M.S.A.T. degree program must also
complete and submit secondary application forms to the AT Director and the Department of Kinesiology. The following requirements
are mandatory for admission eligibility and consideration and must be verifiable during the application process:
1.

Completion of a Baccalaureate degree program from a nationally recognized accredited University.

2.

A minimum GPA of 3.0 in previous college and university coursework.

3.

Satisfactory score (at or above the 50th percentile for quantitative and qualitative sections) on Graduate Record Exam
(GRE) taken within five years.

4.

Satisfactory completion (C or better) of the following pre-requisite coursework (course syllabi must be submitted to the
Program Director with the application):
o

Human Anatomy (lecture and lab)

Minimum content requirement: Study of determinants of healthful and safe living for various age
groups. *Please note that activity-based courses (e.g., walking, jogging) will not fulfill this
requirement.

5.

A minimum of 200 hours of clinical observation/experience under a Certified Athletic Trainer within 2 years prior to
program application. Documentation of clinical hours must be verifiable on the official AT Program application.
o

Please note that hours obtained under the supervision of a Physical Therapist do NOT count unless the
individual is dual credentialed as an ATC/PT.

International students who do not have access to a certified AT in their home country are encouraged to move
to the United States and complete their hours prior to applying to the program.

6.

Completion of the official AT Program Application.

Application Process
Students apply for summer admission with classes beginning in late May. The application deadline is January 15 of each
calendar year. Applications may be accepted after the January 15th deadline; however, candidates are at a competitive
disadvantage after this time. Only complete applications will be reviewed. Missing information will cause a delay in processing the
application and will affect the applicants status. The application process is a four fold process with information being sent to The
Graduate School, the Department of Kinesiology, and AT Program Director. Please download the official AT application packet above
for a detailed checklist of application items. In addition, qualified candidates are required to participate in an on-campus interview at
their own expense. Only qualified candidates will be invited to interview after the January 15th deadline. Candidates are strongly
encouraged to follow the application instructions specified in the Athletic Training Program Application packet to ensure that
materials are sent to the appropriate location.
Admission Criteria
Application to the AT program is highly competitive. The AT Student Admission Committee (comprised of at least three full-time or
adjunct athletic training faculty members) reviews the credentials of each applicant. Final selection is based on many factors,
including satisfactory evidence of completed pre-requisites, previous academic performance, prior clinical and allied health
experiences, goals statement, the quality of recommendations, on-site interview, and the number of students already enrolled in the
athletic training program. No single admission criterion has a decisive influence on the applicants acceptability, and exceptions to
the requirements can be made on recommendation of the committee and approval of The Graduate School. Admission to the AT
program is NOT guaranteed simply upon satisfactory completion of all program pre-requisite requirements. The number of
students admitted into the program varies from year-to-year, with the number of students selected ranging from 8-10 annually.
Notification of Admission

Graduate Admission Process

All graduate students must complete a separate application to the MAT
through the Athletic Training Centralized Application Service (ATCAS). This
includes meeting the admission criteria and completing the application materials
listed below:
Formal admission starts with creating an account through the ATCAS
A minimum College/University bachelor's degree from an accredited institution
with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 and prerequisite GPA of 3.0
Criteria such as quality of applicant essay (guidelines can be found on
the application checklist)
Minimum of 75 clinical observation hours under the direct supervision of a
Board of Certification (BOC) - certified athletic trainer
Technical standards document - sign this document and return it with your
admission materials

GRE scores are not required for admission. Admission to The University
of Findlay DOES NOT Guarantee admission to the MAT.
Admission is limited and not guaranteed to those meeting the minimum
admission criteria.
Only those who are formally admitted into the professional phase can
continue with the academic and clinical education components of the
program.

Applicants with graduate coursework completed: There may be some graduate

courses that will transfer into our MAT curriculum. Each student's case will be
reviewed individually according to the University transfer policy. Regardless of what
courses transfer, the type of clinical experiences and previous degrees earned, our
MAT program is still two years in length - as required for CAATE accreditation.

If a prospective student is lacking any of the requirements by the application

deadline, please contact Dr. Steven to discuss your options. Furthermore,
admission of qualified students will continue until all available positions have
been filled. Classes for the Professional Phase of the MAT program begin
in July.

Program of Study and Admission Criteria

Program of Study and Admission Criteria
Introduction
The University of Arkansas in Fayetteville offers a Entry-Level Master's of Athletic Training. The athletic
training education program was granted national accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation of
Athletic Training Education (CAATE). Admitted students are offered the opportunity to interact with highquality researchers/teachers in the field of exercise science throughout the 2 1/2 years of coursework,
clinical rotations, and the research thesis, independent research project or case study. Employment
opportunities for graduates include serving as health-care professionals for sports medicine clinics and
hospitals. Other employment opportunities include professional teams as well as university, college and
secondary school athletic teams.
The athletic training education program is a precertification program in athletic training and is not intended
for students who are already eligible to sit for the BOC examination. Currently, the athletic training
education program boasts a 100 percent pass rate on the national board on the first attempt four the last
four years and 91 percent since the program's inception in 2004. This is a full-time graduate program and
requires considerable clinical experience as part of the requirements for graduation. This is a competitive
program that requires admission to the Department of Health, Human Performance and Recreation (HHPR)
department and the athletic training education program.
