Committee Policy- 2015-16

1.

OBJECTIVE

This being the maiden year of The MUN Society, it primarily wishes to craft a strong premises
on which the MUN Society can sustain for the coming years. In furtherance of the same, the
society aims to act as a protocol that will guide decision making and assist the committee to
achieve desired outcomes by ensuring increased and qualitative participation in various Model
United Nations by the students of SLCU during this academic year.

The society also wishes to engage in various academic activities which will ensure sound
theoretical knowledge regarding various facets of International Law dealing with UN in
essence. Lastly, The Committees chief aim is to host a Model United Nation Conference in the
year 2016 with a scale larger than the last edition.

2.

DEFINITIONS

(1.)MUN SOCIETY means Model United Nations Society.

(2.) Faculty Coordinators are members of the Faculty identified by the management
as Faculty Coordinators for the Committee. Subsequently for the AY 2015-16, Mr. Alexander
Samuel, Ms. Sindhuja I, Mr. Venugopal Menon and Ms. Vidya Ann Jacob shall be the Faculty
Coordinators.1
(3.) Academic Coordinators are the members of the faculty identified by the
management as Coordinators of School of Law, Christ University, who for all purposes shall
be Mr. Sandeep Desai and Ms. Mini S shall be the Academic Coordinators.
(4.) Members mean the members of the M UN Society inclusive of the Two
Conveners2, a Co- Convener and the Core Committee Members chosen to be a part of the
MUN Society, after prior approval of the Faculty Coordinators.
(5.) Committee Policy refers to the Policy followed by the MUN SOCIETY.
(6.) Organizing Committee refers to the committee set up with its various departments
for the purpose of organizing the School of Law Christ University Model United Nations
(SLCU MUN).
(8.) Host College refers to the College/University conducting the MUN.
(9.) Director refers to the Director of School of Law, Christ University, who for all purposes
shall be Fr. Benny Thomas.

(10.) H.O.D. refers to Head of the Department of School of Law, Christ University, who for
all purposes shall be Dr. Somu C.S.

3.

PURPOSE AND SCOPE

(1.)The Model United Nations Society presents its policy for the AY 2015 2016.
(2.)The policy will act as a guideline that will assist the decision making process and smooth
functioning of the Committee for this academic year.
(3.)The policy shall be in consonance with guidelines prescribed for School of Law Christ
University (SLCU).
(4.)The Committee will be in charge of all the events related to Model United Nations, and
its members are entrusted with the task of inculcating and encouraging an interest in such
events amongst the students of the SLCU.
(5.)Where the MUN Society Policy is silent on any matter, such matters will be dealt with by
the

Faculty

Coordinators

and

Conveners

in

consultation

with

the

Academic

Coordinators. Further representation may be taken to the H.O.D and Director. Their decision
will be final, conclusive and binding and no further appeals regarding the matter will
be entertained.
(6.) Any and all amendments to the Policy shall be done after due consideration by the
committee members and the Faculty Coordinators with the approval of the Academic
Coordinators.
(7.) Notwithstanding anything contained herein, the decision of the HOD and the Director is
binding with regards to any and all concerns pertaining to the MUN Society.

4.

CORE COMMITTEE MEMBERS

(1).FORMATION:
(a.) The committee will have Two Conveners, from the 4th Year Batch.
(b.) The committee will have one Co-Convener from the 3rd Year Batch, selected by the
Faculty Coordinators in consultation with the Conveners from the applications received.
(c.) Core Committee Members will be shortlisted from applications received from the
students of 2nd, 3rd and 4th year batches and finally selected by the Faculty
Coordinators in consultation with the Conveners.
(d.) A mail shall be sent out seeking these members, and giving equal opportunity to all
members of the Student Body of SLCU.
(e.) The selection of the Co-Convener and Core Committee Members shall be the discretion
of the Faculty Coordinators and Academic Coordinators.

(2).

RULES FOR COMMITTEE MEMBERS:


(a.) Core Committee Members should attend all meetings held by the Committee.
(b.) A Core Committee member shall not abstain from attending the meeting without
informing the Conveners or Co-Convener beforehand, without a legitimate reason for
such an absence.
(c.) If a Core Committee member misses more than 2 consecutive meetings without
informing the Conveners or Co-convener of the legitimate reason for their absence, he or
she is liable to be removed from the Committee.
(d.) Core Committee members must attend every committee event and complete the assigned
work in an effective and efficient manner. Failing to do so will result in them being
removed from the Committee unless excused from attending a committee event by
procuring permission beforehand from the Faculty Coordinators and Conveners
providing a legitimate reason.

ALLOTMENT OF MUNS3

5.

(1.) The MUN Society shall host workshops 4 for the students who are interested to
participate as delegates in various MUNs during the AY 2015-2016 and for the students
participating as a part of the Executive Board shall follow the procedures laid down in
Section 6 of the Policy.
(2.)The MUN Society shall hold at least one session per week and the agendas for each
week shall be disclosed via email to the student body.
(3.)Every Student who wishes to represent SLCU, shall adhere to the following procedure:

(4.)On the basis of the number of workshops and past experiences, The MUN SOCIETY
will allot permission to a maximum of SIX students per MUN to represent SLCU as
delegates.
(5.)

In case there are lesser representations made for a MUN, these constraints may

be relaxed subjected to review by the Faculty Coordinators, Conveners and the


Academic Coordinators.
(6.) Each student will be allowed to represent SLCU in a maximum of TWO MUNs
per academic year.

5 Notable Participation means where the student has received the award of Best
Delegate, High Commendation or any other equivalent form of appreciation.

6.

PROCEDURE FOR ATTENDING MUNS

Students interested in participating in MUNs, should adhere to the following procedure, and any
deviation from the same will result in getting debarred from representing SLCU in MUNs:
(1.)The MUN Society will keep the students of SLCU updated on the various MUNs
happening all over India, periodically through the committee blog and through Emails.
(2.)The students interested in any of these MUNs, should apply to the MUN Society
and in the event of applying for MUNs independently, the same shall be intimated via
email to the MUNSOC along with Past Experience and notable achievements, if any.
(3.)Upon getting allotted in the MUN, The student must get the hardcopy of the
following documents to the committee for seeking permission:

(4.) On the date of rejoining, the hardcopies of the following documents shall be submitted to
claim attendance for the co-curricular activity:

ABSENCE DETAIL.

(5.)Any and all disputes arising out of an allotment will be dealt with by the Faculty
Coordinators and Conveners, in consultation with the Academic Coordinators. Their
decision will be final, conclusive and binding and no further representations
regarding the matter will be entertained.
(6.)If the permitted student acts in violation of a n y o f the terms specified in
SCHEDULE II, he/she will be barred from participating in any MUN conferences in
the future and disciplinary action will be taken by the School of Law management.

seeking permission.

7.

ATTENDANCE

(1.) A student requires A MINIMUM OF 85% ATTENDANCE, for the committee to


approve of their participation in any MUN during the year.

(2.)For students participating in MUNs, attendance can be claimed for the DURATION OF
THE MUN AND TRAVEL.
(3.)Attendance shall not be provided the students whose participation is not duly
ratifies beforehand by the management and the conveners.
