Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Does Lightower need to be contacted before I plug in my service?
A: No. At the time of circuit delivery and turn-over,
over, all ports for your service are left active and ready for your use. In the event that
you require assistance during activation, please call the Lightower Test and Turn
Turn-up team at 855-607-8170
8170 (NOTE: This Test and
Turn-Up
Up number should NOT be used to report circuit troubles and/or outages instead use the
NOC number: 888-LT FIBER (888-583-4237)).
Q: How do I connect my equipment to the Lightower network?
A Depending on the service ordered, Lightower will typica
typically
lly install CPE (Customer Premise Equipment) in a rack, or on a wall. Both
examples are shown below. Unless otherwise directed, customers should look for a blank RED PORT IDENTIFIER PLUG see example
photos - (it
it is a modular plug connected to a short re
red
d stub, and will be labeled with your circuit ID). Remove this RED PLUG, and
insert a standard Ethernet cable (straight or cross
cross-over cables will both work) into the port vacated by the identifier plug.

Q: Are there any configuration settings I need to be aware of when connecting to the Lightower network?
A: Yes. Unless you specified otherwise on the Lightower Service Order Form, your Ethernet service will be configured as follows:

Port Interface Type and Speed hardcoded as 1000LX (i.e. 1GB/S single mode fiber LC connector).
Auto-Negotiate =NO (or OFF).
Duplex Hard Coded to FULL (No auto-negotiation).
negotiation).

Q: Should I configure traffic Shaping/Policing on my network?

A: Lightower recommends its customers limit their equipments output rate at (or below) the maximum bandwidth speed
purchased. Lightower provides a Layer 2 connection between the end points specified on the Service Order, and thoroughly tests
for proper Layer
er 2 throughput at various speeds and frame sizes using the industry standard RFC 2544 test.
NOTE Customers may need to fine tune application settings (e.g. remote replication services, video etc.) in order to maximize the
available layer 2 throughput.
Q: Will the Lightower network pass Jumbo Frames? What is the maximum MTU size?
A: Yes. The Lightower network is configured to allow the customer to transmit a maximum MTU size of 9100.
Q: When I conduct an Internet speed test using one of the available online test sites, I do not get the speed I expect in each
direction. How come?
A: Please see the separate Lightower document Internet Speed Testing and the Lightower Network
Q: How do I request DNS changes (PTR records for example)
A: Written request to the NOC via email: support@lightower.com
Q: I ordered Internet Service from Lightower, why am I provided a /30 as well as statically routed address block? (see EXAMPLE 1
and EXAMPLE 2 drawings below)
A: Lightower provides its customers a /30 or /31, in addition to any pre
pre-approved
approved directly assigned IP space, to provide a point of
demarcation between the customer's internal network and the Lightower public Internet infrastructure. This directly addressed
point-to-point
point WAN link provides a secure strategic test and demarcation point which lies directly between the customer's CPE
(un-trusted/public
trusted/public interface) and the Lightower network. This allows Lightower customers to freely use any assigned
assig
or owned IP
space in the trusted region of their network - i.e. those interfaces that lie between a physical firewall or a firewalled routed
interface. There are two advantages in Lightower providing this additional address block:
(1) It allows customer
omer infrastructures to exist independently without the need to co
co-mingle
mingle networks by having customer internal
network IP addresses appearing directly on an external device.
(2) The customer assigned block is now more portable. Should the customer decide
de to add another Internet connection with
Lightower, or a backup connection to another provider, segregating the customer's internal block from the one used to address the
WAN interface connecting them to Lightower allows for this flexibility.
