CN3108/Annex 1

General Information of CN3108 (Chemical Engineering Laboratory II)

Lab Structure
1) Based on the estimated number of students, there will be 4 experimental sessions per week, 4 hours
per session (Mon Tue Wed Thur 1 - 5pm).
2) Each session will have 15 groups and each group will have 4 members (Group of 3 or 5 members may
happen due to uneven grouping).
3) Each group will have the opportunity of performing the same experiment twice in two consecutive
sessions. In Semester 1 of Year 2015/2016, each group will perform Six experiments (2 from Reaction
Engineering basket, 2 from Biologics Manufacturing basket, 1 from Heat Transfer basket, and 1 from
FluidSolid Systems basket). Please see Annex 3 for the experimental schedule and baskets. Lab
manuals are available on IVLE for download.
4) Lab demonstrators are to be eliminated in this lab, i.e. no demonstration will be conducted in the
beginning of each experiment. Instead, Safety Officers will be installed for alleviating safety concerns
(Please see below for the roles of Safety Officers). The students are expected to learn each
experiment on their own. If they cannot, they should seek help from the corresponding instructor,
and not from the safety officer.
5) Lab Instructors will be selected among academic staff for providing technical and experimental
consultations as well as viva to students. Students are encouraged to contact the corresponding
instructors for consultations (Please see below for the roles of Lab Instructors).
6) FYP lab safety briefing and test will be placed in CN3108. They have been tentatively scheduled on 8
& 15 August. Time and venue will be announced soon.

Formation of the Experimental Group

1) Each group will be composed of 4 members -- Leader, Experimenter, Data Analyst, Literature reviewer.
2) The grouping of students is done randomly. Please refer to Annex 2 for details.
3) All the members are expected to contribute and to understand the operation of the experiment that
they are running.
4) The responsibilities of each group member in the report are listed in the following:
Leader
(a) Overall appearance and cohesiveness between each section of the report
(b) Abstract / Summary/ Introduction/ Conclusion
(c) Lab Safety Analysis
Experimenter
(a) Coordination of raw data collection (during the experiment)
(b) Experimental procedure
(c) Quality of the data
(d) Raw data management

Data Analyst
(a) Data analysis
(b) Sample calculation
(c) Error analysis
Literature Reviewer
(a) Review of technical background
(b) Discussion of data sets and the experiment

5) The role of each student in the group will be rotated from one experiment to the next one in the
following order:

The role of the students in the FIRST experiment is given in Annex 2 as well.

6) Due to uneven grouping, some groups will consist of five members. For these groups, the role of data
analyst is duplicated. The rotation becomes the following order:

Roles of Lab Safety Officers

1) Lab safety officers will be present during each session of the lab (MTWTh).
2) They are selected from the current PG student pool. They will be assigned to different experiments,
depending on the nature of the experiments.
3) They will be in charge of the safety of the experiments and to alleviate any safety concerns that the
students may have.
4) The safety officer should provide minimum technical/experimental guidance to students. The students
are expected to learn each experiment on their own. If they cannot, they should seek help from the
corresponding instructor, and not from the safety officer.

Roles of Lab Instructors

1) Three lab instructors are installed for each experimental session. For Reaction Engineering (R) and
Biologics Manufacturing (B) baskets, one instructor is installed to each of the baskets, which contain 3 to
4 experiments. Heat Transfer and Fluid-Solid Systems (H&F) together are responsible by one instructor.
(Please see Annex 3 and 4 for details).

2) Students should be proactive in seeking advices (theoretical and experimental, potential pitfalls etc.)
from the corresponding instructors. They should arrange meetings with the instructors before and after
the experiment, if necessary.
3) The instructor will conduct viva to the student groups performing the corresponding basket of
experiments during Week 2 (or 2nd session) of the experiment. Students are encouraged to arrange a
convenient time for both the instructor and the students themselves for the viva in advance.
4) The instructors will attend and evaluate the final presentation given by students during week 13.

Module Assessment
1) Grading: 5 reports + one final presentation (55%), 5 vivas (25%), safety test (10%) and peer review
(10%).
2) Each group will be subjected to viva during Week 2 (or 2nd session) of each experiment.
3) Each group is required to submit a written group report (of not more than 20 A4-sized pages, with
double-sided printing) to room EW2-04-02 at the beginning of the lab session for next experiment. A
softcopy of the report should be uploaded onto IVLE within a day after the hardcopy submission.
4) Indicate your roles on the cover page of your lab report.
5) For the final experiment, no report is required. Instead each group is required to make a 20-30 min oral
presentation on the experiment during the 13th week of the lab.
6) Late submission will be penalized at 10 points per day.
7) Students have to report their attendance individually to lab officers in room EW2-04-02 not more than
30 minutes after the commencement of the lab.

Plagiarism
1) Discussion among fellow students and other groups is permitted, but report copying is not
allowed. Software to track report copying will be installed.
2) If any context of the report is deemed copied, the whole group will be penalized as the following:
(First time) Zero mark on the report
(Second time) Grade F for the module
