Subject: Request for training in Smart Grid Technology

Smart grid technology is the key for an efficient use of distributed energy
resources. Noting the climate change becomes an important issue the whole
world is currently facing, the ever increasing price of petroleum products and
the reduction in cost of renewable energy power systems, opportunities for
renewable energy systems to address electricity generation seems to be
increasing. However, to achieve commercialization and widespread use, an
efficient energy management strategy of system needs to be addressed.
Recently, the concept of smart grid has been successfully applied to the
electric power systems.

Electricity generation from renewable sources will need to increase
significantly to achieve the objective of 175 GW of renewable energy (RE) in
the Indian energy mix by 2022. Fortunately, there is growing evidence in
many countries that high levels of renewable energy penetration in the grid are
technically and economically feasible, particularly as solar and wind
technologies increasingly reach grid parity in economic terms. However,
continuous and expanded growth of the share of renewables in centralised and
decentralised grids requires an effective new approach to grid management,
making full use of smart grids and smart grid technologies. Existing grid
systems already incorporate elements of smart functionality, but this is mostly
used to balance supply and demand. Smart grids incorporate information and
communications technology into every aspect of electricity generation,
delivery and consumption in order to minimise environmental impact, enhance
markets, improve reliability and service, and reduce costs and improve
efficiency.

Government of India has recently approved the National Smart Grid
Mission (NSGM), which is going to launch a new set of smart grid projects all
across the country. Main focus of the next round of smart grid projects would
be to leverage the assets created under RAPDRP to transform the distribution
utilities to Smarter Grids with low incremental costs. For successful
implementation of other programs that the GoI has recently launched, such as
Integrated Power Development Scheme (IPDS), Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram
Jyoti Yojana (DDUGJY), new RE Program for 175 GW by 2022, 100 Smart
Cities, Electric Mobility Mission with a target of 6-7 million EVs by 2022 etc,
utilities need to adopt Smart Grid technologies at a faster pace. However, the
technology is just one piece of the puzzle. Success of Smart Grid squarely
depends on smart and knowledgeable professionals who will implement and
operate the new systems.

Indian Smart Grid Forum (ISGF) has announced the First Batch of
ISGF-VJTI Joint Certificate Course on Smart Grids (CCSG) for 3 months, a
full time course starting from 21 September 2015. This course has been
developed as a unique and first-of-a-kind program on Smart Grids that will
prepare utility engineers, industry executives and fresh graduates to
understand the nuances of smart grid technologies, architectures, standards,
business models and implementation experiences of past projects. This 3
months program will not only cover the foundations of the Smart Grids but

also add a practical flavour by deep diving into the details of core challenges
that need to be addressed on various dimensions of it including field visits.

To achieve the target of 175 GW by 2022 by Renewable Energy,
MNRE needs to groom its professionals in this area. Undersigned is a graduate
in Electronics and Communication Technology. He has also taken part in the
formulation of Model Regulation on Smart Grid in CERC where he was on
deputation. This training on smart grid will provide updated knowledge in
smart grid domains through conceptual knowledge and experiential learning.
The participation fee of the training is Rs 1 lakh with service tax. In view of
the above, it is requested to grant approval to participate in this training
program which is being organised by ISGF.
