LETTER FROM THE TE

magazine
September 23 marks the beginning of a new season: beloved autumn. The
weather and landscape are hard to beat in Wisconsin, and we could go on and
on about our favorite things. But we wont, as Edgar Albert Guest said it best in
his poem:
Its September
Its September, and the orchards are afire with red and gold,
And the nights with dew are heavy, and the mornings sharp with cold;
Now the gardens at its gayest with the salvia blazing red
And the good old-fashioned asters laughing at us from their bed;
Once again in shoes and stockings are the childrens little feet,
And the dog now does his snoozing on the bright side of the street.
Its September, and the cornstalks are as high as they will go,
And the red cheeks of the apples everywhere begin to show;
Now the suppers scarcely over ere the darkness settles down
And the moon looms big and yellow at the edges of the town;
Oh, its good to see the children, when their little prayers are said,
Duck beneath the patchwork covers when they tumble into bed.
Its September, and a calmness and a sweetness seem to fall
Over everything thats living, just as though it hears the call
Of Old Winter, trudging slowly, with his pack of ice and snow,
In the distance over yonder, and it somehow seems as though
Every tiny little blossom wants to look its very best
When the frost shall bite its petals and it droops away to rest.

Its September! Its the fullness and the ripeness of the year;
All the work of earth is finished, or the final tasks are near,
But there is no doleful wailing; every living thing that grows,
For the end that is approaching wears the finest garb it knows.
And I pray that I may proudly hold my head up high and smile
When I come to my September in the golden afterwhile.
We hope you enjoy the reprieve of the summer heat and the crisp air as much
as we do!

The
purpose of
bereavement

By Katie Hilst, DVM

hat is bereavement? Bereavement is defined as the

period of mourning after a loss, especially after the
death of a loved one. Bereavement is a state of intense
grief and desolation. Bereavement may include emotional, mental,
social and physical reactions.
We go through bereavement to help us live life after a loss. With a
loss, our life is irreversibly changed. We cannot go back to the person
or pet we have lost. Bereavement helps us acknowledge the loss, adapt
to the loss and move forward with our life in a changed world.
Acknowledging the loss makes us feel sad and alone. Often we
may have a sense of disbelief the loss has occurred. We may feel
it is difficult to get through the day without the love and support
from our lost loved one. Feeling the loss hurts emotionally, and
may affect us physically too. We may not have the energy to do
our normal activities, and we may not want to eat. We may have a
difficult time interacting with other people, and we may not care
about things that were once important to us.

Adapting to the loss is vital to be able to function on a dayto-day basis. We must go through bereavement because we are
mortal, and we all will lose someone (pet or person) that is important to us. We continually lose loved ones through our lives and
our lives are constantly changing. We need bereavement to help us
through a life that is changing. Perhaps our losses occur to make
room in our lives for new pets and people to love.
Moving forward in a changed world is a must we cannot
pretend we still have those who passed away in our physical lives.
Who we are is a result of what we have been through in our lives
the good, the bad and the sad experiences. A life with loss makes us
stronger, makes us happier to enjoy the good moments and helps
us to live in the moment. We can help ourselves move forward by
reaching out to others and discussing our losses. Bonding with
other people who have also experienced a similar loss can make us
feel less alone. A strong sense of community and shared memories
helps us go forward in the world and adapt to the change.
Remembering Our Pets is a memorial service for pets, held on
the second Sunday in September, which is National Pet Memorial
Day. Remembering Our Pets helps us cry, laugh and share memories of our pets with other people who have experienced the loss
of a pet. It is a healing ceremony, and is free and open to all who
have lost a pet. The event details can be found at my website www.
JourneysPet.com. I hope to share with you there!

Bring bliss
back

By Kirsty Blattner

n July 30 I was honored to be speaking at the Dream

Bank downtown. The title of my presentation was Bring
Bliss Back and Harnessing Harmony. I came up with the
title when I was thinking about times in my life when it felt like
all of the bliss had vanished. There was stress, pain, hurt, fear and
struggle instead. I know its not realistic to feel 100 percent blissed
out 100 percent of the time, but what if it were possible to add a
touch of bliss to everything we do? I started pondering this and
thought of some areas I was feeling stuck. One of them was daily
exercise. From 5-23 years old, I vividly remember loving running
and exercising I was pretty obsessed with it. I was my own
strongest competitor and would push myself relentlessly and love
it! Somehow I lost my love of running and at 40 I have not been
able to fully get into a regular exercise regime that I love.
I remember that I used to run with a tape deck (then a
Discman!) and loved it! So I grabbed my headphones and iPhone
and cranked up some tunes. As I walked out the door I saw the
resident Tina Turkey! This made me laugh and I took a photo to
share with my husband. This is how Photos On The Fly was born.
I now have an Instagram and Pinterest album dedicated to these
photos. It brings a smile to my lips and dancing music to my ears.
It makes me happy and it doesnt matter if I walk, run or jog I
always arrive home blissFULL, grateful and harmonized.
At the start of August our volleyball team entered into an
all-day volleyball competition. We have all been playing together
since 2011 and we play well together. We had a rough start, then
won four games and the next round lost one. It was hot, we were
exhausted and I found myself getting upset that we lost the last
game as I know our team could have won. My teammate, not
buying in to my negativity, said, Well, its a beautiful day today
and we are lucky enough to spend the whole day out here
nothing wrong with that! I smiled and immediately my mood
www.naturespathways.com

lifted. He was right. This wasnt about winning or not winning,

it was about having an amazing time, playing well and enjoying
the atmosphere. This reminded me of bringing the bliss back into
everyday situations. It can be as simple as a sentence reframe! We
ended up coming second in the volleyball tournament, which we
were all happy with!
How can you reframe an activity or situation that you may not
be blissful about? Dont like cooking? Rock out to your favorite
tunes or watch a movie on a device as you prep food! Dreading finishing some homework or work assignment? What if you
worked in 25-minute increments and had 5-minute breaks doing
something you loved? Only you will know what best works for you
and having someone assist, support and keep you accountable can
make the process a lot easier! Remember, If you keep doing the
same thing over and over again and expecting a different result,
well that is the definition of insanity! In life we need to make a
stand and do something different to what we were doing before to
get a totally new result. What would you love to change in your
life? Have a sensational September and let me know if there is a
way I can support you in living the life of your dreams.

Bruno
Groening
Circle of
Friends

The Bruno Groening Circle of Friends receives the International Peace Pole Award from the
World Peace Prayer Society at the United Nations Tillman Chapel, May 23, 2013

rigitte Schneider, licensed healing practitioner from

Frankfurt, Germany, will give a talk in Madison on Oct.
20 at 7:30 p.m. at the Goodman Community Center. Ms.
Schneider will talk about a natural and cost-free way of healing,
based on the teachings of Bruno Groening. Her visit is part of a
lecture tour in the Midwest and precedes a showing of the documentary film about Bruno Groening on Nov. 14 at Edgewood
College.
Bruno Groening (1906-1959) became well known around
the world because of incredible mass healings that occurred
in Germany in the 1950s when he stood before crowds of help
seekers, imploring them to return to God and believe in the good.
Brigitte Schneider is a member of the Medical Scientific Group
(MWF) of the Bruno Groening Circle of Friends. The MWF is
an international association of thousands of medical doctors,
psychologists and other healthcare professionals from more than
100 countries. The physicians and psychologists in the group
examine and medically verify healings that continue to occur
today in the Circle of Friends.
Ms. Schneider will present some of these documented healings
and talk about a natural energy that can heal, which Groening
called the heilstrom or the divine healing stream.
All illness, all disease, is really a lack of energy in the body and
the soul, she says. Bruno Groening taught us how to take in this
natural, divine energy in a very simple, cost-free way.
During lectures like the one Ms. Schneider will be giving in
Madison, many people experience the healing energy in their

bodies, sometimes as warmth, tingling, vibrations and often as a
deep sense of peace. Those who view the documentary film about
Bruno Groening have similar experiences.
In Germany, many people seeking natural, holistic healthcare
consult with healing practitioners, who must undergo extensive training and stringent examinations by the state in order to
be licensed. Ms. Schneider, a licensed healing practitioner who
has had her own successful practice for the past 28 years, uses a
variety of natural methods and medicines to treat her patients.
They include botanicals and homeopathy, which are sold by
prescription in regular pharmacies in Germany alongside standard pharmaceuticals.
Why, I asked Ms. Schneider, if she already knows about natural
www.naturespathways.com

healing methods and the healing power of nature, does she need
Bruno Groenings teachings?
We healing practitioners, and doctors as well, cannot heal;
we can only help. Only God can heal. I have been in the Circle
of Friends for eleven years. I have seen so many healings. Much
suffering has ended, and illnesses that left where medical people
could not help. I have become convinced that what Bruno Groening said is true, that there is no incurable, that God is the greatest
physician.
Of course we get older, but we dont need to get ill in our
old age. Ms. Schneider described the healing of a woman from
Munich, Germany, Gertraud Fischer. She suffered from continual, severe pain in her finger joints, knees and back. She had a very
hard time walking and needed a cane. Bone density tests showed
osteoporosis. She couldnt tolerate estrogen or calcium so she only
took vitamin D. Her condition got continually worse. She came
to the Circle of Friends and after a few months of taking in the
healing stream, she was healed. Her bone density tests became
normal. Now she is in her 80s and has been healthy for 13 years.
She is so active; she goes hiking in the mountains.
An extensive archive in Hamburg, Germany contains thousands of documented healings like the one experienced by
Gertraud Fischer. It was always Bruno Groenings wish to work
in cooperation with physicians. He took no money for the healings that occurred but always asked that the healed people write
down their healings and get medical documentation. These documented healing reports, he said, were proof of Gods work.
Before a healing can be published, said Ms. Schneider, it has to
be verified by medical doctors in the Circle of Friends and whenever possible, by an independent physician. We want as much
documentation as possible: X-rays, blood tests, examinations.
When asked why she and many other health professionals
and medical doctors give their time for no payment to help in
the Bruno Groening Circle of Friends, using their weekends and
vacations to give lectures like the upcoming one in Madison, Ms.
Schneider says, What I can see is that nowadays so many people
are ill. So many have chronic diseases. Bruno Groening tells us in
very simple words about where illness comes from from the
power of bad thoughts and a lack of energy. With this teaching,
I like how people can learn to help themselves, to feel for themselves what is right for them. Here we can fill up again with divine
energy. It deeply moves me to see people who had deep depression, deep despair, become happy again, get back the joy of life.
And I am so touched when I see people get healed from any kind
of addiction. Because they get their freedom back through the
healing.
And we learn how to do it ourselves, without paying. You
cannot pay God. And this is very important to me, that people
learn how they can receive what God wants to give them, all the
divine power, this healing stream, that they know there is a natural
energy that can heal and change lives.
In May of 2013, the Bruno Groening Circle of Friends was
awarded the Peace Pole at the United Nations Tilman Chapel
by the World Peace Prayer Society. To Brigitte Schneider, this
aspect of the Circle of Friends is very important. The teachings
of Bruno Groening bring peace to people and this is a part I love
www.naturespathways.com

very much. I love that we have Bruno Groening communities all

over the world on every continent and in over 130 countries.
Friends meet together regularly in community hours because the
healing stream is much stronger when we absorb it together. And
it is beautiful to see, for example, how Bruno Groening friends
from Palestine and Israel visit each others community hours.
Ms. Schneider adds that the teachings of Bruno Groening help
with more than just healing from physical and mental afflictions.
I know so many teachers in the Circle of Friends. Their profession
has become much easier for them. They have a deeper love that
they can give to their students. Living according to the teaching of
Bruno Groening makes life on all levels easier and more precious.
We practice love. The divine love in our hearts for everyone.
The Phenomenon Bruno Groening, on the Tracks of the
Miracle Healer will be shown on Saturday, Nov. 14 from 3-9
p.m. (including two breaks) at Edgewood College, Sonderegger Science Center, Room 108, 1000 Edgewood College Drive,

Raindrop
Technique:
What
is
this?

By Tracy Jobe

aindrop Technique is something I struggle with finding a

concise, accurate definition for. Most people want a quick
answer, although truly experiencing it is the best way to
know. I simply state that it is a combination of energy and massage
work using very specific, therapeutic oils to promote healing on a
physical and emotional level, but here is the scientific definition of
what Raindrop Technique is: Raindrop Technique is a sequence of
anointing with oils and laying on of hands that brings structural
and electrical alignment to the body in a relaxing and invigorating
manner through the power of essential oils.
There are many versions of the Raindrop Technique, but the
same oils are always applied though not always in the same
sequence. Most of the Raindrop oils are high in phenolic content
to ward off potentially damaging viruses and bacteria while
cleansing cellular receptor sites to enhance inter- and intra-cellular communication and improve overall bodily functions. Some
Raindrop oils contain a variety of monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes to assist in deleting misinformation in the DNA, and in
reprogramming correct information in cellular memory to restore
and maintain physical and emotional wellness. The oils used in
Raindrop Technique must be high quality, and therapeutic grade.
This technique was developed by Young Living Founder and CEO
D. Gary Young, and inspired by Native American Lakota wellness
traditions.
When you first come in for Raindrop Technique, you will be
asked to fill out an intake form, and a brief introduction will be
done. Your practitioner may also measure your height before
starting as one of the side effects of Raindrop Technique is that
growth in height can be seen immediately after treatment. You will
be instructed on how much to disrobe, and start lying face up on
a massage table. The practitioner starts by balancing your energy
on your shoulders, and then goes to your feet. Then oils will be
applied on Vitaflex points of the foot. Vitaflex is a term coined
by Stanley Burroughs meaning, Vitality through the reflexes.
It consists of a specialized form of digital electrical stimulation
using the pads and nails of the fingers in a rolling motion to fire
voltages into the body through reflex points.
12

Natures Pathways | September 2015

Next you will be turned over, lying face down. Oils will be
dropped 6-12 inches above your spine, and be massaged in using
different strokes. After this process is complete, a hot compress
will be added to your back and you will be allowed to rest while
the oils are heating up. All oils throughout the whole process are
applied neat, or without being diluted, but on occasion people
may experience a little irritation or warmth from a specific oil.
This can happen because some oils cause heat when in contact
with the skin, and they react with viruses, bacteria and toxins.
In general this is a good sign that the oils are seeking out and
destroying harmful aliens that hibernate in the fatty tissue and
lymph nodes along the spine. If this gets to be too uncomfortable, let your practitioner know, and they can dilute the oil with a
carrier oil, providing immediate relief.
When you are done, you will be instructed to get up slowly, and
drink some water. Raindrop Technique is detoxifying, and proper
hydration will help your body recover from the treatment. Your
height will be measured again, and it is typical to see anywhere
from a inch to a inch of growth, but not always immediately
noticed. Adjustments in your body will continue for a week, so be
aware of anything that continues to happen over the next several
days.
Detoxification is one of the main side effects of Raindrop Technique, and symptoms afterward of this can include body soreness,
headache, sinus drainage, coughing or a rash on the skin. For the
majority of Raindrop clients their experience is a pleasant sense of
improved well-being, relaxation (most fall asleep during the treatment), energization, emotional release, and in some cases chronic
ailments have fallen away immediately or soon after a session. If
youre looking for something different to add to your health and
wellness routine, give Raindrop a try.

How to find
time for
exercise

iet and exercise are essential components of a healthy

lifestyle. While even the busiest men and women can find
ways to eat healthy, finding time to exercise can be more

difficult.
According to the Presidents Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition, regular physical activity can prevent chronic diseases like
heart disease, cancer and stroke, which are the three leading causes
of health-related death in the United States. In addition, men and
women who are not physically active are at greater risk for developing type 2 diabetes. Regular exercise helps people control their
weight while promoting bone, muscle and joint health.
While the benefits of regular exercise are substantial, finding
the time for daily exercise is not always so easy. The following are a
handful of strategies men and women can employ as they attempt
to make more time in their days to exercise.
REEXAMINE YOUR FREE TIME. Few adults, and especially those

juggling families and careers, have an abundance of free time. But

reexamining the ways you are spending your free time may help you
uncover some moments for daily exercise. The Council on Fitness,
Sports & Nutrition notes that adults between the ages of 18 and 64
need at least two and a half hours each week of moderate-intensity
aerobic activity. While that may seem like a lot, its only slightly more
than 20 minutes per day. It helps to supplement such aerobic activity
with some strength-training activities at least two days per week. Try
waking up 20 to 30 minutes earlier each day, using that time to hit
the treadmill or jog around the neighborhood. You likely wont be
affected by waking up earlier, and you wont need to alter your existing schedule for the rest of the day, either. If mornings arent your
thing, make better use of your lunch hour, going for a jog or visiting
your companys exercise facilities if that option is available to you.

the elliptical or jog on the treadmill.

REDUCE YOUR SEDENTARY TIME. A 2008 study from

Australian researchers found that people who regularly break up

their sedentary time, including the hours they sit behind their
desk at the office with movement had healthier waist circumferences, body mass indexes and triglycerides than those who did
not. While hourly breaks to walk around the office might not
seem like exercise, such breaks can benefit your long-term health.
GET CREATIVE. Many people associate daily exercise with

private gyms, and while gyms can serve as excellent motivators and great places to get full-body workouts, time involved
in driving to and from the gym can make it difficult to commit
to gym memberships. But you dont need a gym membership to
live a healthy lifestyle. When possible, take the stairs instead of
an elevator and park further away from your office door so you
get a small cardiovascular workout on your way into and out of
the office. Rather than retiring to the couch after dinner, walk or
bike around your neighborhood. Such simple gestures may seem
insignificant, but the more creative ways you find to exercise each
day, the more beneficial such efforts become.
While there is no way to create more time in the day, men and
women can employ several strategies to make more time for daily
exercise.

WORK WHILE YOU EXERCISE. Technology has made it easier

than ever before to stay connected to the office even when you are
nowhere near your desk. Men and women who cant seem to find
time to exercise often cite the demands of their job as the primary
reason behind their inactivity, but those same individuals can
use the technology at their disposal, be it smartphones that allow
them to keep track of work emails or tablets that make it possible
to connect remotely to office servers, to work while they exercise.

Reiki, crystals
and
kids

By Angela Kowieski

chool is now in session! I dont know about you, but being

a busy mom of 3 very little ones can be very stressful and
trying at times. Now getting all of my kids back into the mix
of school can be somewhat overwhelming not just for me but
my little ones as well. With my middle child starting kindergarten
this year not only have my anxiety levels of finding everything she
needs to start this new journey gone up but hers have as well. As
a mom that wants to introduce my children to alternative ways of
calming and self-relaxation I was drawn to Reiki and crystal use.
I asked my Reiki practitioner, Patsy Mckenzie, some questions
prior to the visit so that I could explain better to my daughter
what the treatment would entail. These are the answers she was
able to share.

How do I explain what Reiki is to my child?

Its like taking an awesome nap! You will be able to relax and your
mom or dad will always be there right with you. You can even bring
your favorite stuffed animal or blankie if that comforts you more.

There will be no pain or discomfort associated with the visit. I do
recommend to come in for a free consult with your child prior to the
visit so that they can feel more comfortable with the services and me.

How long should I expect the first visit to be?

the service prior to the treatment.

Who benefits from Reiki?

Reiki is great for anyone who needs help balancing their emotional
and physical body, but it especially helps to calm those dealing
with fears, stress, depression and anxiety.

After the service, is there any type of at-home

care you recommend?

Cleansing the childs aura (I teach them how to do this in the

first visit)

Regularly cleansing their home, smudging with sage and

following with Paulo Santo for protection (there are also

essential oil sprays that can help with this if youre not
comfortable with smudging)
I normally recommend different crystals for placement in the
childs room or around your home
Implementing regular salt baths
After I got my questions answered, I explained a little more about
the visit to my daughter who agreed she wanted to try it. So we set
up a time for her to try Reiki!

Our visit

We arrived and Patsy greeted my child and I at the front of the spa.
We filled out a client consultation and consent form, then entered
the treatment room together. She explained who she was to my

daughter and told her that mom was going to stay in the room
with her. She was told that if she were to ever feel uncomfortable
or if there was anything she didnt like, we could end the session
at any time. She then showed her various crystals and explained
to her that she could choose the ones that she liked and asked if it
was OK to place them on her body during her treatment. Jasi was
excited about the crystals since they all looked shiny and pretty
to her. Patsy then began explaining to my daughter that she was
going to have her lay down on the Reiki table and she could just
relax like she was going to take a nap.
Patsy then began the treatment and I was able to just close my
eyes as well and relax for that time. Jasi giggled a little and did not
seem scared or uncomfortable. When Patsy was finished Jasi was
very relaxed and all smiles. She then recommended that Jasi drink
plenty of water and gave me a lesson on how to cleanse her aura
at home. One of her recommendations was a selenite lamp in her
room at night. Since Jasi and my other daughter always sleep with
a night light, I thought that it would be a great substitute to the
light they already have with an added benefit of the crystals. All in
all the visit was a success!

ADHD
and brain
function
101

By Dr. Laura Konopacki

ts normal for kids to be full of energy and quickly switch from

one activity to the next. But when it gets extreme and impairs
the childs ability to function in daily life like not being able
to pay attention in school or behaving in inappropriate ways it
might be a sign of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

What is ADHD?

ADHD is a developmental disorder characterized by impulsivity, hyperactivity and inattention. We all have had bouts of these
symptoms, and thats normal. But when its chronic and impacts
the childs ability to learn and behave properly, it can quickly
become a serious problem that can wreak havoc on entire families.
Epidemiological studies have also shown that:
Almost 60 percent of children diagnosed with ADHD are
oppositional
2550 percent have anxiety problems
2070 percent have learning disorders
Among other things, research has also shown that children with ADHD have more problems with:
Physical fitness, gross and fine motor coordination, as well as
motor sequencing
Verbal and nonverbal working memory
Planning and anticipation
Selfregulation of emotions
More sleep problems
More upper respiratory tract infections and asthma
More allergies
I could go on. The reason why I am sharing this is to
make two points very clear:
1. Children diagnosed with ADHD have problems that go way
beyond their brain and behavior; in fact, they have problems
in various systems of their body and mind.
2. That being acknowledged, only prescribing a medication
cannot be a comprehensive approach to helping those children.

The ADHD brain

Our brain is like a car thats going at high speed. In order to

maintain control, its important to have good brakes. Science has
shown that the ADHD brain is like a Ferrari with bicycle brakes.
The brakes are not strong enough to control the power of the
16

Natures Pathways | September 2015

engine. Its caused by the interaction of genetic and environmental

factors that converge on the brain and delay the development of
one hemisphere, usually the right.

Two parallel computers

Our brain has two hemispheres, which are like two parallel
computers. If you have two Pentium 5s, you get double power. But
if youve got a new Pentium 5 on one side and an old Commodore
64 on the other, youve got problems because the old computer
is not fast enough to keep up with the new one. The system can
lock up. Thats what is happening in the ADHD brain. The delayed
hemisphere is weaker, which leads to communication problems
within the brain that can then result in symptoms of inattention,
impulsivity and hyperactivity.

Good news for stressed families

ADHD takes a major toll on families, but there is hope. With the
advance of scientific research, we now know that its possible to
help the delayed hemisphere of ADHD children by combining
specific brain-balancing stimulation and nutritional recommendations that are based on the unique needs of the child.
Chiropractic adjustments play an important role in helping
balance the brain because when the spine is adjusted, it sends
information that travels to various areas that have been shown
to be involved in ADHD, such as the cerebellum and right hemisphere. When complemented with exercises and activities that
specifically target the weak or delayed hemisphere, the results can
sometimes be phenomenal.
For example, in one study done by a chiropractic neurologist in
New York it was shown that by using the proper natural approach,
80 percent of ADHD children were so improved that they no longer
met diagnostic criteria. And that happened in just 12 weeks! That
doesnt mean chiropractic care will cure ADHD, but it can go a long
way in helping the child behave better and function at their best.

Wound healing
and injury
recovery

By Jed Downs

hat are reasonable expectations in terms of time

sequence and duration after injury? That depends on
many factors including the type of trauma, the location of the injury, the size of the injury, the age, and the nutritional
state of the injured individual.
If there is no threat to life and limb, from an osteopathic standpoint it is a good practice to remain humble and let the body do
its work first, before stepping in and assisting with corrections to
help the body achieve optimal recovery. I will be discussing the
basics of wound healing more than discussing the function of
manual therapies such as osteopathy.
Wound healing takes place internally as well as externally, but it
is easier for most to visualize what happens at the level of the skin.
There are many, often overlapping, stages in healing of varying
duration.
The first stage is stopping the bleeding. Platelets are activated
and a clot forms. Assuming one is not on aspirin or blood thinners
and that major blood vessels are cut, this stage typically occurs in
well under 10 minutes. The blood vessels constrict platelets and
are activated, and a fragile fibrin clot is laid down.
After the bleeding stops, there is dilation of blood vessels that
creates increased fluid filled extracellular space in which the next
stages can occur. This is the inflammatory stage, which begins day
one and if not delayed may last as long as 4 weeks. The blood vessels
become more porous so that various types of white blood cells can
migrate to the area to fight bacteria and to digest dead and damaged
tissue. Different types of WBCs play different roles. The later arriving macrophages release chemicals to facilitate making new blood
vessels to resupply oxygen and nutrients for subsequent stages of
recovery. When the cells have performed their task they typically
die off to make room for the next cellular processes.
The next stage is the proliferative phase that overlaps with the
inflammatory stage. New blood vessel growth leads to the characteristic pink of healing tissue. Fibroblasts migrate from adjacent non-injured tissues as well as the blood stream to lay down
connective tissue lattices made of collagen and proteins bonded
to sugars that bind water to maintain the extracellular space. The
extracellular space is necessary for chemical messengers to diffuse
and for cells to have room to move to where they are needed. Also
www.naturespathways.com

occurring in this phase are the processes of re-epithelialization

(new skin growing across the wound) and wound contracture/
shrinkage. Some of the fibroblasts change into myofibroblasts that
contract like smooth muscle and that also use proteins to staple
cells together. This phase can last up to 2 months and produces
tissues with about 50 percent of normal strength. Repetitive
trauma at this phase can destroy progress (e.g. tennis elbow).
Overlapping with the proliferation phase is the remodeling phase, which may take over a full year to be complete but
which is beginning by about 3-4 weeks. In the proliferative phase
weaker proteins are laid down in a haphazard fashion to provide
scaffolding for further repair. The remodeling phase exchanges
weak connective tissue for stronger forms of connective tissue.
The fibroblasts respond to tissue tensions and forces, and lay the
improved protein down along lines of force. The tissues regain ~80
percent of the original strength. The unneeded new blood vessels
die off and the pinkness goes away. Depending on the depth, location and size of the wound, either the tissue looks normal or a scar
is born and matures.
Osteopathic treatment impacts mechanical irregularities
or barriers within the body that may influence fluid and blood
movement to an injured area. Consequences may include delayed
healing, or development of adhesions. There can be issues with
persistent pain due to misalignment of associated bony, joint or
fascial structures.
The question of when to intervene with manual therapies is
influenced by multiple factors. One should not treat locally with
techniques that have a good chance of breaking down healing
tissues and tearing new blood vessels. There are other times
when treatment will reduce swelling and improve circulation
and promote healing. Later breaking adhesions manually may be
important for recovering function.
Jed Downs, M.D., MPH, has been studying osteopathy since
1995. Formerly, he worked in occupational medicine until pursuing his passion full time at Madison Manual Medicine, 2940
Chapel Valley Road in Fitchburg. He uses osteopathic techniques
to manage consequences (pain and loss of function) of trauma
regardless of etiology, be it birth, sport, MVA, repetitive strain or living life. For

Lets empower
our
children

By Jennifer M. Warner, MSE, LPC,
& Holistic Psychotherapist

ts the beginning of a new school year! And with that comes a

rise in depression and anxiety in my clients. So we may ask, is
it the transition back into school after the summer break? Is it
getting back into the routine and schedule of school? Or is it the
homework and exams? Yes that all can contribute, but more often
it is about the pressure they feel from their parents. Thus, I was
guided to write this to give parents a glimpse into the perceived
experience of children, the one that I am told all too often.
Yes, the transition back to school can prove to be rather challenging for our children. And as parents, it can be easy to get
caught up in the success or the perceived failure of our children.
Children feel the pressure from parents expectations. Children
fear disappointing their parents. Children feel the overwhelming
need to be the best so as to not disappoint parents. Children fear
talking to their parents for fear of being judged, ridiculed, criticized and yelled at. With such things children then shut down,
isolate, stop trying and all too often just give up.
Children feel the pressure from society too. If you dont, then
you wont type of scenarios the unrealistic pressure of having
to be the best at everything.
Yes, we want our children to be successful, but at what cost?

The cost of their emotional and mental health? Our children are
constantly being told to do well in school, get good grades, get into
a good college, graduate and especially make a good living doing it.
This approach can just add to the fear and pressure that our
children are already experiencing.
I want our children to be able to step into their power, feel
supported, feel loved and feel valued no matter what. I want our
children to develop their own identity and not be something
because someone else chose it for them or because it was expected.
My clients tell me that they feel unworthy, feel powerless, feel
unsupported and feel unloved because they are not heard. I know
children that would rather die than have to disappoint their
parents. Depression does have its role as its the brains way to shut
down the judgement and the criticism. It is also a way to get the
attention of the parent and for the child to get help.

How to empower our children

Dont judge. When anyone feels judged they withdraw and

isolate out of fear of rejection. Judgement can come in the form of
criticism, focusing on what you dont like about your child. Children then start to believe that they are not enough, dont matter,

and are not loved. Judgement also isnt just stating comments
directly, it is also energetic. Therefore, even when never said, but
only thought by a parent, it energetically can be felt by our children. They can sense the disappointment and your fear.
When possible, let children make decisions. When you
make their decisions it teaches them to not trust themselves and
doubt what is right for them. We want our children to think for
themselves and not have to make decisions based on what others
think and want. We shouldnt have to have approval in order to
feel worthy and valued from others.

Put your childs emotional well-being first. Dont punish

your student for not getting good enough grades. Instead, explore
options to support them.

And most importantly, always find a way to love them no matter

what!

Focus on the positives. Then children will less likely think in

lack.
Encourage expression. This may include their style of dress/
hair, and their friends. Often this is just a time that they are
exploring and trying to find themselves. The more you draw negative attention to it, the more it often leads to more extremes. Allow
them to be who they are. This also includes the ability to express

Why is my
mouth
so dry?

By Amy Sergeant, D.D.S.

e all need saliva to moisten

and cleanse our mouths and
digest food. When you dont
make enough saliva, your mouth gets dry
and uncomfortable. This is commonly
known as dry mouth, or xerostomia. Saliva
prevents infection by controlling bacteria and fungi in the mouth. Dry mouth
raises your risk of gingivitis (gum disease),
tooth decay and mouth infections, such as
thrush. Dry mouth can also make it difficult to wear dentures.

Common symptoms of dry

mouth include:

A sticky, dry feeling in the mouth

Frequent thirst
Sores in the mouth, sores or split skin

at the corners of the mouth, cracked

lips
A dry feeling in the throat
A burning or tingling sensation in the
mouth, especially on the tongue
A dry, red and raw tongue
Problems speaking or trouble tasting,

Sacred Healing Center

Your expert in compassionate and
empowered care for women and families
Helping people has always been a part of who Shannon Gyles and
Nicole Budeau are. They both found Chinese medicine and quickly
realized their passion for energy work and healing could be encompassed in an alternative approach. Through experiencing their own
individual challenges in becoming and being parents, they feel
committed and honored to help make this process easier for women
and their families in the community.
We both really share the same heart and vision for natural healing,
fertility, pregnancy and postpartum care, Shannon says. We joined
forces and since then its been about continuing our vision day by day
expanding and growing together were really partners in what
were doing and how we grow our business.
Nicole opened her business, A Healers Hand, where Shannon was
an acupuncturist before separating and creating Madison Acupuncture & Holistic Health. They wouldnt be apart for long their bond
held strong and with a combined 19 years of experience, the duo
reunited in October of 2013 to form Sacred Healing Center.
Sacred Healing Center was born from Shannon and Nicoles desire
to provide a sacred space for not only patients, but also different
practitioners in the area who shared in their vision. While there were
22

Natures Pathways | September 2015

womens health centers around the area, none seemed to encapsulate their specific view about the importance of support and empowerment of women.
Shannon and Nicole make it a point to offer encouragement about
being comfortable in your skin wherever you are in your process.

Compassionate and comprehensive care

Sacred Healing Center offers many different specializations, therapies and education: acupuncture and massage for fertility, pregnancy, labor induction, postpartum, therapeutic pain and stress relief,
Chinese herbal medicine, Reiki, intuitive healing, chiropractic care,
nutritional and lactation consultations, natural skin care, craniosacral, and hands on massage training for pregnant couples. They even
provide corporate wellness services to companies in the area.
Through it all, though, theyre clear about their intention to facilitate rather than do the work.
I do believe our bodies have everything they need to be well,
Nicole says. I facilitate peoples own wellness. Im helping people to
allow themselves to heal and feel better.
www.naturespathways.com

Our heart is to have people come in and feel nurtured and

empowered within their spectrum of healing, Shannon adds.
To be present with them, and to help facilitate whatever healing
they need.
Shannon and Nicole have many years of clinical experience
working with pregnant women. Their goal is to help women
enjoy their pregnancies through decreasing pain and discomfort, alleviating sciatica and ligament pain, reducing nausea and
gastrointestinal issues, helping decrease anxiety and insomnia
and much more! They also specialize in labor preparation work,
helping with breech presentation and inducing labor. This care
can greatly help women avoid interventions and medications
during pregnancy and labor.
In all phases of fertility, pregnancy and postpartum the stress
component can be huge, so if we can decrease that, then the body,
mind and spirit can come into a better state of balance, Shannon
says. When we address the stress and help support women and
help them to be heard and let them be vulnerable, I think that
allows for transformation.
Not only are acupuncture and massage relaxing (and sometimes
thats enough!) and therapeutic, theres a reason women should
consider these therapies in the stage before pregnancy. Acupuncture
and massage can increase blood flow to the reproductive organs,
and can help regulate ovulation and menstruation. Essentially, these
therapies are able to help a womans body to be in a more receptive
state for pregnancy and can help foster viability and sustainability
of a healthy pregnancy. They treat many common conditions and
aspects associated with infertility (polycystic ovary syndrome, endometriosis, low ovarian reserve, unexplained infertility and conjunctive care with assisted reproductive technology). Their commitment,
expertise and compassion allows women to be fully supported
through their journey with fertility and healthy pregnancies.
Then when women allow for the time to be nurtured and taken
care of postpartum, acupuncture and massage can assist in healing
from labor and delivery. Reducing pelvic, back, neck and shoulder
pain and bringing the body back into pre-pregnancy state. These
therapies can also help with mastitis, increasing milk production and
reducing postpartum depression. Shannon and Nicole are passionate about helping women take care of themselves postpartum, as
it is a difficult yet critically important time for women to be present
to their own needs. They believe when women take the opportunity
to give themselves the gift of postpartum care, they are able to be
more present to their babies and families in a profound way.

Meeting you where you are

In Sacred Healing Centers case, healing comes in many forms.
Along with Shannon, an acupuncturist, Chinese herbalist and
intuitive healer, and Nicole, a licensed massage therapist, certified
prenatal massage therapist, and certified Reiki master, (shes also
currently completing her certification to become an infant massage
instructor), the team consists of other practitioners who offer
support within all aspects of care.
Colleen Eimerman, a licensed esthetician and licensed massage
therapist works with people experiencing general pain, trauma
and skin conditions. Margaret Wertheim, registered dietitian

nutritionist focuses on womens

health with an integrative and whole
foods based approach to nutrition.
Dr. Erin Shook, doctor of chiropractic, works with both neurological and
soft tissue of the body with a focus
on pediatrics and womens health.
And Patricia Smith is an occupational therapist, lactation consultant
and craniosacral therapist focusing
on breastfeeding issues and children with special needs.
Meeting clients where they are can mean a variety of things, and
thats the point. Whether going through infertility, pregnancy, postpartum or motherhood and any phase within those Shannon
and Nicole are clear in Sacred Healing Centers ability to help everyone, not solely women who are interested in fertility treatment or
prenatal care. Conditions that they see often include general pain,
headaches and migraines, sciatica, anxiety, depression, endocrine
issues, and digestive disorders.
Sacred Healing Center offers a variety of packages and classes
to help women and their families support and take care of themselves. Packages offered at Sacred Healing Center include: fertility, supporting healthy pain-free pregnancies, labor preparation
and induction, postpartum, and general multiservice packages for
patients with pain or other conditions.
What we love most is seeing a patient through fertility, and then
supporting them throughout their pregnancy and postpartum,
Shannon says.
And then we get to share the joy of meeting their baby! As
healers this experience humbles, inspires and fulfills our hearts
intention, Nicole adds.
Sacred Healing Center has handfuls of joyful stories when it
comes to helping women throughout their journeys, and thats
exactly why Shannon and Nicole love what they do every day.

The great
mystery

By Ken-Adi Ring

ho are we? What are we? What

is ours to do? Why were we
created? Why did it take 13.8
billion years to arrive? These are curious,
if not daunting, questions for the human
race about its origin and its purpose. Why
does it matter? We are the first species to
actually be able to ask such questions and
then self-reflect on possible answers. Many
books, films and articles have attempted to
explain what is happening and where are
we headed, and one can say it is a cautionary tale to say the least. Previous articles in
this magazine attempted to address a brief

history and explanation in parts referencing a self-organizing universe, cosmology,

sustainability, wellness and environments.
It is the destiny of all creation to know
itself or IT Self. Science has evolved from
the earliest peoples stargazing to philosophical thinking and experimental observation attempting answers to these questions as curiosity and awareness reflects
more deeply upon itself with evolved use
of mind combined with technology. We
are not only able to see smaller and farther
with discovery and penetration, we are
able to abstract and create new tools as we

go where no one has gone before. It is an

exciting time to be alive with the horizon
of technology making such an impact.
Even with the political and cultural challenges we are facing, hope and possibility
are ever present. We evolved out of chaos
and as intelligent species our destiny is to
take the next exciting yet tentative steps.
We are at a new precipice of transformational paradigms. A spiritual as well as
technological evolutionary empowerment
is taking place even as the world and global
unity seems to be profoundly disturbed.
Along with technology, the 20th and 21st
centuries gave rise to greater worldwide
practice of meditation, yoga and other
practices of inner work. There is still hope
and life is evolving to new heights of inner
wisdom, mindfulness and courage to use
it. As such we inherit great responsibility.
Samadhi, God, yoga and evolution are
all concepts. Opposite of concepts is experience and the way is through meditation and contemplation. It appears quite
convincingly that we are separate individuals given our separate body formulations
and abilities in so called time and space
housing a brain that is a conduit to mind.
Words describing concepts we observe
and then name, are useful in communicating with other bodies with minds,
sharing what we learn collectively. Sharing
is the purpose for our evolution into ever
growing self-consciousness. Time is of no
concern to a self-organizing universe. That
is why it has taken eons for intelligence to
evolve this far. Experience!

GROW YOUR

We each are an almost infinite number of atoms with electrons

and protons surrounding a nucleus in mostly space. Approximately 37 trillion cells make up a well-organized interconnecting,
interdependent and evolving energy form, our body. There are
100 trillion atoms in a human cell. Staggering! 100 billion neurons
in the human brain connect interdependently with cells energetically for one unified purpose. Life expressing!
To say we are separate beings seems true and to say we are part
of the oneness of all things also seems true. The billions of us on the
planet interconnect with each other and depend on each other, our
environment and billions more species with whom we survive with
growing awareness of sustainability. In a very real sense we are part
of the oneness of our planet. Further out we extend that oneness to
our solar system, galaxy and cosmos, God expresses as the oneness
of being in star systems, dark matter. Miraculously humbling!
Be not deceived by appearances. We are metaphysical beings in
what appears to be physical bodies in a physical playing field. The
truth is, this body is a tool for the mind. We are created by God, of
God and for God. That is the meaning of made in the image and
likeness of God. Julian of Norwich, the fourteenth-century Christian mystic, said most simply but most radically that, we are not
just made by God we are made of God. We are born from the very
womb of the Divine. Top physicist Neil deGrasse Tyson states,
we are made of stardust. This God is everywhere expressing
individual expressions of itself micro- and macro-cosmically as
only an infinitely divine mind can. Know thyself, first attributed
to Socrates and inscribed at the temple of Delphi, is our purpose.
So mind is everywhere present and we are able to consciously tap
into it through mindfulness meditation. Due to the nonlocality of
mind we can realize beyond perceived limitations of body. We are
then unlimited. So there is that apparent tapestry interwoven in
the fabric of a very expansive universe, which is available to us all.
Thanks to theologian and well-known spiritual author John Philip
Newell for the Julian of Norwich quote from his book, Christianitys Struggle for New Beginnings: The Rebirthing of God.

Is stress
stealing your
life
away?

By Sonya Sullins

esearchers estimate that 90 percent of doctors visits are

the result of stress, or stress related ailments. Thankfully, modern medicine does a great job in acute care
and trauma situations; unfortunately, the same is not true when
it comes to helping you address the stress in your life. Not only
can chronic illnesses cause stress, but stress can be the cause of
chronic illness and disease. As hard as we try, many of us do not
find effective strategies to manage stress, probably in large part
because we dont really understand what stress is or how to
avoid it.
As far as the body is concerned, stress is anything that triggers the amygdala in your brain to flip on what Walter Cannon
at Harvard termed the stress response, also known as the fight
or flight response. Your body is brilliantly equipped with natural
self-repair mechanisms, but they only function when the stress
response is turned off. We all know on some level that stress is
bad for us, but what is important to recognize is that as far as
your amygdala is concerned, every negative thought you have is

turning off your bodys natural self-repair mechanisms.

What is stress?

Stress is social isolation and loneliness.

Stress is selling your soul for a paycheck.
Stress is a pessimistic world view.
Stress is fearful, anxious, worried thoughts.
Stress is toxic relationships.
Stress is money worries.
Stress is feeling out of touch with your lifes purpose.
Stress is negative beliefs about your health.
Stress is overwhelm.
Stress is feeling like nobody really gets the real you.
Stress is pretending to be something that youre not.
Stress is feeling disconnected from source.

These are the things scientifically proven to weaken the bodys

natural self-repair mechanisms and predispose you to illness. But

when was the last time your doctor prescribed a safe and effective way for you to relieve your depression, fatigue, pessimism, or
anxiety as prevention or treatment for your illness?
I felt compelled to write on this topic at this time of year
because as the days get a bit cooler and a bit shorter, and schedules and commitments change as the kids return to school, many
of us are faced with a number of additional stressors. Depression,
fatigue, overwhelm, exhaustion and even pain are among the chief
complaints I hear. Does any of this sound like you or someone you
love? What is the medicine you really need today?
Many people find their health, and by extension their happiness,
vitality, and zest for life, profoundly improved by implementing
regular far infrared therapy using the Amethyst BioMat. Balance
your hormones by reducing cortisol and adrenaline (dial down
your fight or flight stress response), and increasing serotonin
(your feel good hormone) and allowing your body and mind to
relax, recover and get out of overwhelm. Simply by lying atop a
bed of amethyst crystals while your body is bathed in far infrared
waves and negative ions, your overall health will be improved at
a cellular level.
You might like to use the BioMat therapeutically by lying on
it for an hour or so a day, by sitting on it (chair size version) at
work or in your car, or by sleeping on it in your bed at night as
an aid for insomnia or other sleep disorders. Most people find a
combination of these uses their favorite option. And most people
report they have to compete for BioMat time once other family
members discover it!
Amethyst BioMat is truly experiential, so I encourage you to try
it for yourself. There are copious amounts of research and testimonials, but the most important thing for you is to see if its the right
solution to meet your needs. Take advantage of our introductory
special and come bliss out on the Amethyst BioMat and you
can bring a friend!

The fruit of
summer:
tomatoes

By Debi Morton

eautiful in color and taste, there is nothing like the

first fresh tomato of the summer lightly sprinkled
with salt to bring out its brightness or perhaps a little
balsamic for balance, and then topped with a drizzle of extra
virgin olive oil. Tomatoes not only taste great, but are so healthy
for you. They are an antioxidant high in vitamin A and C, and
folic acid. Another big bonus is that they are so easy to grow
regardless of your gardening expertise.

Plant

Tomatoes are so easy to plant and prolific. They can be sewn

in pots, small plots or large gardens with equally good results.
The variety is endless from the cherry type to the precious
heirlooms. Good sun is a must. Soil needs to be slightly acidic,
sufficient in nitrogen and warm.

Store

But what to do with all those tomatoes?

Dry

The most care-free way to store tomatoes is to dry them, either

using solar, a screen (see make your own resource below) or
convective drier. Drying takes less room and not much energy.
For example, my 1000 KW dehydrator runs for 4 hrs and costs

28 cents. I love it. You just put the sliced tomatoes in and walk
away. You can dry them to just soft or all the way to a crisp. I
like them soft and then I use with olive oil or freeze in a zipclose bag at that stage.

Freeze

Just like peaches and other large fruit, you can freeze whole or
cut in half tomatoes on a cookie sheet until solid. Then bag in
a zip-close bag.

Can

Many people love to reach for the red glass jar in the middle
of the winter. There is some work involved, but its worth it.
You are basically doing the following, according to freshpreserving.com: Prepare boiling water canner to sterilizing jars.
Wash and cut tomatoes into quarters about 2 cups. Add 2
tablespoons bottled lemon juice to each hot quart jar. Pack hot
tomatoes into hot jars to within a generous 1/2 inch of top of
jar. See simplycanning.com for easy and very visual instructions on how to do this.

Things to
do before

home
................................................................

ats and dogs are the two most popular types of pets in the
country, and while dogs have been dubbed mans best
friend, cat owners are quite vocal when expressing their
love for their feline friends.
Those looking for a cat may not have to look far. The ASPCA
says approximately 7.6 million companion animals enter animal
shelters nationwide every year, and roughly 3.4 million of those
are cats. An area shelter is an ideal place to find a new pet for those
thinking of getting their first cat or adding to the pets already in
the household. Cats can be purchased from pet stores, but they
also may be available via friends or family members who have
recently welcomed a new litter.
Before bringing your cat home, it is best to make sure you and
members of your household are prepared to welcome a furry
feline friend into your home.
IS EVERYONE READY FOR THE RESPONSIBILITY? Pets are

in the house for your cat. This should be a low-traffic spot. Keep a
litter box and food and water bowls nearby.
STOCK UP ON YOUR SUPPLIES. Cats will need various pet

supplies to be comfortable and healthy. For the time being, use

the same products the cat had at the shelter or pet store, which
can create a sense of familiarity that makes cats more comfortable
in their new homes. Over time you can transition slowly to new
supplies, including:
Litter box and litter material
Food

Scratching posts
Interactive toys and solo toys
Brushes and other grooming supplies

ready and willing to pitch in and care for pets. Divide duties based
on age and physical ability. If a member of the family doesnt

to do so.

properly care for the animal.

Three steps to

ime to stock up on that zinc and a tree! Wait, what? Cold

season is just around the corner whether we want it
to be or not, and according to Dr. Oz, larch can help in
the prevention of them. A new study found that larch can help
reduce the number of colds by 23 percent, he writes. A separate
study by the National Institute of Health backed up the findings.
And while the manner in which you take it wasnt explicit, the fact
that taking it reduces your chances, was.
There are a number of other steps one can take to strengthen
your immunity. Some of those include the use of nettle, meditation and regular Reiki sessions. Why stinging nettle? Nettle and
nettle seeds and their properties are curative, acting as a tonic,
astringent and antiseptic among other benefits. Its seeds, when
soaked in wine overnight (see recipe below), can reduce fever
and flus, and tone and strengthen capillary tissues to name a few
rewards. It also helps support the adrenals, reduces hypertension
and helps prevent the common cold. A simple recipe of nettle tea,

infused for approximately 10-15 minutes, will assist you on your
way to health and healing.
Once youve settled down with a hot cup of nettle tea, try some
meditation. Oming your way into blissfulness has been proven
to reduce stress, which helps to strengthen your immune system.
But you dont need to sit on a pillow with crossed legs to meditate.
Simply finding a quiet place and listening to white noise or meditation music will help boost antibodies. A recent study, Deepak
Chopra, M.D., writes, confirmed that, after being given weekly
meditation training for 8 weeks, 48 biotech workers had significantly higher levels of antibodies than the control group (coworkers
who didnt meditate) as well as higher levels than before the study.
You can also try a walking meditation. Head out on your favorite trail; walk in cadence and chant, Sa-ta-na-ma as you swing
your arms and touch your thumbs on both hands to each of the
four fingers (you can chant silently if there are people around. Or
not!). This multiple activity may balance out the brain allowing
one to take the focus off of self and find an inner connection with
www.naturespathways.com

something greater.
Meditation also stimulates immune functions within the brain.
When you meditate, your brain lights up in the prefrontal
cortex, the right hippocampus and the right anterior insula. All
three of these areas directly correlate to the command center for
your immune system, allowing it to function more effectively.
Adding Reiki treatments, whether on yourself or receiving from
another person, can only assist in further strengthening your
bodys immune system functions. Reiki gets to the root of physical illnesses by clearing out energetic blockages created within
the body. These areas, if unchecked overtime, begin to build up,
which in turn creates physical warning signs: a sore neck, an irritated throat, twitching in the foot. The state of relaxation one can
attain while receiving Reiki is similar to that of meditation. While
in this state, the practitioner can then work on those areas of the
body that contain this stuck energy. This allows those energy
blocks to loosen and release.
Over time, your whole body begins to function like the welloiled machine it is supposed to be keeping you healthy and
free from illnesses. As with any type of bodywork, drinking plenty
of water before and after will assist in the release of toxins and
blockages. These suggestions, along with advice from your doctor
and a regular exercise routine, can bring a body back into tiptop
health. So, drink, zen and Reiki your way back to health before
cold season sets in!

slush with fruit and flavoring it with something interesting like a

liquor or an herb. In this case, use tomatoes and basil and serve in
a nice cold martini glass. To make, add a little garlic, salt, pepper, a
pinch of cayenne and basil to your crushed tomatoes, and balance
with a touch of sugar if necessary. Freeze. During the freezing
period you will want to mash with a fork 2-3 times to create slush
like a snow cone or Italian ice would be. Spoon into your martini
or fluted glasses and return to the freezer for a frosty presentation.
Polenta can be lightened up with tomatoes and served as a salad
for a beautiful summer buffet dish. This is an adapted version of
Jacque Pepins salad I have been making for many years. As you
know, polenta will firm up, so in this dish you are going to layer
tomatoes, basil, spinach and polenta in a bowl. Let it firm up.
Invert on a plate and you will have a very colorful red, green and
yellow dish. When you cut into it you have a layered cake effect.
Make your polenta as you normally like it (I recommend on
the softer side with cheese). Set aside.
Steam pound of spinach. Cool.
Chop good heirloom tomatoes or cherry tomatoes, add
garlic, olive oil and fresh basil. Set aside.
Oil a large bowl well to enable the mold to come out easily.
Assembly: Start with polenta on the bottom, add a spinach
layer, then your tomato salsa layer, and repeat so you have 3
layers, ending with polenta.
Let firm up in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes. Then
when ready to serve, invert on a dish. You will have a dome of
polenta with striations of green and red colors.
Cut into wedges or just spoon out. Its very tasty, and is light
and good as a main dish or as accompaniment to chicken,
fish or meats.

Recognize
the warning
signs
of stress

tress is a part of life for many men and women. But as prevalent as stress is, many people are unaware of the potentially negative side effects that can result when stress goes
untreated.
According to the American Psychological Association (APA),
chronic stress forces the muscles in the body to be taut and tense
for long periods of time, a guardedness that can make men and
women susceptible to stress-related disorders such as migraine
headaches. In addition, the APA notes that stress can cause people
to hyperventilate, which can trigger panic attacks in those prone
to such events. Long-term stress has also been linked to a host of
cardiovascular ailments, including hypertension, heart attack and
stroke.
Stress can be triggered by a host of things, and whats stressful for some may not be for others. But while people may react
differently to certain situations, there are some common warning
signs of stress that men and women should learn so they can
more quickly address any problems with the stress they might
encounter.

Physical symptoms

Stress manifests itself in various ways, including physically. Physical symptoms of stress may affect the musculoskeletal system,
causing muscles to tense up and remain that way until a stressful
situation has come and gone. Aches and pains can result as well,
and some people coping with stress may experience nausea and
dizziness.
Stress also can affect the cardiovascular system. When that
occurs, uncomfortable and potentially dangerous symptoms such
as rapid heartbeat and chest pain may result.

Emotional symptoms

Stress also can affect mood. According to the Cleveland Clinic,

32

Natures Pathways | September 2015

signs of emotional stress include apathy, feeling on edge, a change

in eating habits, and changes in sleeping patterns, which may
involve sleeping more than usual or difficulty getting to sleep.

Cognitive symptoms

Some people coping with stress may have to deal with certain
cognitive symptoms. Such men and women may find themselves
in constant states of worry, and their thoughts may race to an
extent that makes it difficult to accomplish certain tasks. Additional cognitive symptoms include poor judgment, inability to
focus and feelings of forgetfulness and disorganization.

Behavioral symptoms

Stress also can affect behavior, and men and women suffering
from stress may act nervously. Nail biting, fidgeting and pacing
are among the behavioral symptoms of stress, which may be more
noticeable to loved ones or colleagues than the individual exhibiting the symptoms. Some people also may procrastinate and avoid
their responsibilities when dealing with stress. Increased use of
alcohol and drugs or suddenly smoking more cigarettes also are
behavioral symptoms of stress.
Men and women concerned about stress should consult their
physicians and keep an eye out for any potential warning signs
that stress levels are reaching unhealthy heights.

Green tea
Camellia sinensis

ll types of tea (green, black and

oolong) are produced from the
Camellia sinensis plant using
different methods. Fresh leaves from the
plant are steamed to produce green tea.
Green tea and green tea extracts, such as
its component EGCG, have traditionally
been used to prevent and treat a variety
of cancers, including breast, stomach and
skin cancers, and for mental alertness,
weight loss, lowering cholesterol levels,
and protecting skin from sun damage.
Green tea is usually brewed and drunk
as a beverage. Green tea extracts can be

taken in capsules and are sometimes used

in skin products.

What the science says

Laboratory studies suggest that green

tea may help protect against or slow the
growth of certain cancers, but studies in
people have shown mixed results.
Some evidence suggests that the use of
green tea preparations improves mental
alertness, most likely because of its caffeine
content. There is not enough reliable data
to determine whether green tea can aid in
weight loss, lower blood cholesterol levels

or protect the skin from sun damage.

NCCIH supports studies to learn more
about the components in green tea and
their effects on conditions such as cancer,
diabetes and heart disease.

Side effects and cautions

Green tea is safe for most adults when used

in moderate amounts.
There have been some case reports of liver
problems in people taking concentrated
green tea extracts. The problems do not
seem to be connected with green tea infusions or beverages. Although these cases are
very rare and the evidence is not definitive,
experts suggest that concentrated green tea
extracts be taken with food, and that people
discontinue use and consult a health care
practitioner if they have a liver disorder or
develop symptoms of liver trouble, such as
abdominal pain, dark urine or jaundice.
Green tea and green tea extracts contain
caffeine. Caffeine can cause insomnia,
anxiety, irritability, upset stomach, nausea,
diarrhea or frequent urination in some
people.
Green tea contains small amounts of
vitamin K, which can make anticoagulant
drugs, such as warfarin, less effective.
Tell all your health care providers about
any complementary health approaches you
use. Give them a full picture of what you
do to manage your health. This will help
ensure coordinated and safe care.

The first
steps toward
financing your
next
vehicle
.........................................................................

hen purchasing a new car, many

buyers decide to finance rather
than buying the car outright.
Financing allows drivers the opportunity
to drive a new car after making an initial
down payment and then making monthly
payments until the loan has been paid in
full.
Without the option to finance, many
drivers may not be able to afford a brand
new car or even a preowned car with relatively few miles thats more reliable than an
older used car with a considerable amount
of miles. But before prospective buyers
visit the financing departments of any
dealerships, its best to first take some steps
to ensure they get the best financing deal
possible.

but if you need to finance

your next car, chances are
the high-end imports or
luxury automobiles are
more than you can afford. The greater the
down payment you make, the less your
monthly payment will be. So if you have
a substantial amount of money in your
savings, you may want to put more down
at signing so your budget is more flexible
month-to-month. Calculate the cost of all
of your monthly expenses to determine
how much you can afford to pay for a car
each month. And dont forget that insurance costs on a brand new vehicle will be
more than the costs of insuring a preowned
car or truck.
SEEK PREAPPROVAL FOR A LOAN.

ADDRESS

YOUR

CREDIT

SCORE.

Your credit score will go a long way

toward determining both your eligibility
to finance a car as well as the interest rate
on the loan should you be approved. Get
a copy of your credit report from a credit
reporting agency and scour it to determine
if there are any discrepancies or blemishes
that need to be addressed. If your credit
score is low, try to delay buying a new car
until you can take steps to improve your
score. Such steps may include paying
down existing debt, establishing a history
of paying on time and making certain that
any inaccuracies are removed.
DETERMINE HOW MUCH YOU CAN
AFFORD. It might be your dream to tool

around town in an imported sports car,

www.naturespathways.com

Much like you might get preapproved for

a mortgage, you can do the same with
regard to an automotive loan. Walking
into a dealership preapproved for a loan
can make the process less of a hassle, and it
also might compel a dealer to make a more
attractive offer than the lender who preapproved you.
DONT PRESSURE YOURSELF. Many

buyers are their own worst enemies when

it comes to buying a new car. If you were
preapproved for an auto loan, you might
feel like you need to go out and buy a new
car immediately. While a preapproval may
mandate that you buy a car within a certain
amount of days before you have to reapply,
that still gives you a considerable amount of
time to find a car. If you pressure yourself

to buy a new car, you may end up driving

the wrong vehicle or paying too much. Be
patient when shopping for the best deal,
and youre more likely to find it.
Financing is a great way to get behind the
wheel of your next vehicle. Some careful
planning before visiting the dealership can
make a financing deal even better.

businessPROFILE

HAVE YOU HEARD of the Equilibrex pendant? Its more than

jewelry: It could help you regain control of your life!

Equilibrex is the only scientifically proven energy field regulator in existence today that does not require any manmade
external source of power. It was designed by Vibralife Institute
Laboratories with the highest degree of precision to duplicate the
geometrical structure of the manifestations of higher energies
constituting what is commonly known as life force.
Equilibrex acts as a constant pulse transmitter that generates
a powerful energy field similar to the one created by the forces
responsible for our vital energy. This process neutralizes potentially
harmful molecular vibrations by magnifying stable energy fields.
The key to Equilibrexs success lies in its mathematical blueprint. Its design is a mathematical reproduction of the universal
life force geometrical configuration and its quadra-dimensional
layout acts as a transformer that intensifies ascending energies by
magnifying specific frequencies.

How Equilibrex can benefit your health

Introduce Equilibrex to any living system and the result is a more

powerful, well-balanced and extremely healthy energy field.
We all know the vital importance of a strong energy field. Modern
science is now just recognizing its mere existence. A strong and balanced energy
field leads to a healthy physical
life but more importantly, it
insures that we are mentally
ready to tackle all of our
daily problems and exponentially better our lives.
We have discovered that
when Equilibrex is introduced to a system, its entire
structure rearranges itself at
the molecular level to become
more ordered, closer to the
36

Natures Pathways | September 2015

structure of a purer element. In fact, extensive studies have shown

that contaminated aqueous solutions rapidly transform and show
amazing signs of purification within a very short amount of time.
The free-flowing and quadra-dimensional design makes Equilibrex the scientific device of long-standing spiritual beliefs!
Introduce Equilibrex to your life and start enjoying extraordinary vital energy with all of its benefits and powers. To learn more
about the Equilibrex pendent, visit www.equilibrex.com.
