in music therapy
research

The Doctoral Programme in Music Therapy at Aalborg University offers PhD


education within the science of music therapy. The doctoral students are trained in a
stimulating international research milieu and meets twice a year in Aalborg for oneweek courses where they work with the peer group, invited presenters and the
supervisors.
In this cross-disciplinary and enriching learning community research ideas and
problems are shared, and learning has value at an academic as well as at a
professional and personal level following the principles of Problem Based Learning.
The aim of the doctoral training is to promote the accumulation of clinical evidence,
scientific knowledge, advanced competence in research methodology, theory
development and international cooperation in a collaborative atmosphere of learning.
Two tuition fee PhD scholarships are available for enrolment from Dec. 2015.
With a three year PhD scholarship you will have basic research expenses paid
(supervision, travels, and PhD courses) but no salary and no teaching obligations in
Aalborg.
The scholarships are offered to talented clinical music therapists who have long
experience in a specific clinical field and who have presented a realistic, structured
and focused project description with a clear rational, theoretical basis and wellconsidered methodology.

Eligibility for enrolment


1. MA in music therapy (or equivalent)
2. English language test (TOEFL or IELTS) if you are from outside Scandinavia
or countries where English is not the official language1
3. Documented clinical expertise within a specific field
4. A track record of relevant publications
5. A full proposal received on September 1st 2015 via hum-phd@adm.aau.dk

Application instructions
An application to the Doctoral Programme in Music Therapy must contain
1. The PhD application form2
2. A project description of maximum 10 pages in English language including:
a. a precise summary of the research questions
b. an elaboration of the topic including a reasonable literature review and
theoretical basis
c. an initial proposal for the method
d. a bibliography of relevant references
e. a timetable for the project
3. An extensive CV (on education background, clinical practice, research
experience, research courses attended, conference attendances)
4. A list of publications
5. A suggestion for your research budget not exceeding 70,000 DKK for all three
years (covering e.g. travel, accommodation and fees related to conferences
and seminars)
6. Copies of 2-3 articles published by the applicant and abstract of Masters
thesis
