CONFERENCE TALK BY UTP VICE CHANCELLOR

On 24th March 2012, Saturday, Institution of Engineers Malaysia UTP

Student Section (IEM UTP SS) was invited to WISMA IEM for a conference
talk by UTP Vice chancellor, Y.Bhg. Datuk Dr Zainal Abidin B Hj Kasim. The
purpose of the conference is to gather IEM Student Sections from
Universities all over in Malaysia as the opportunity to increase the
awareness on the existence of each IEM Student Sections. The conference
is also aimed to create bonds between Student Sections and Young
Engineers Section (YES) while absorbing valuable knowledge from VC
sharing. This gathering indirectly leads to a kick-off for IEM Student
Sections especially to UTP as a new organisation in IEM.
The participants departed from UTP at 6.00am and had Subuh
prayer at nearest mosque in Perak. The bus stopped at Tapah for a
breakfast and the journey continued for another two hours. At 9am, the
participants arrived at WISMA IEM Petaling Jaya. The participants were
served with light meal before the talk started. Then, at 9.30am, Datuk Dr
Zainal Abidin B Hj Kasim started to deliver his beneficial experiences on
his 36 years working experiences with Petronas. He also showed some
pictures of himself and his family and it was an amazement that he could
explain in details about his past. The talk also touched on leadership skills.
One of the main points was leaders should anticipate while being

consistent with decision. Attitudes determine altitudes was the phrase

VC highlighted before he proceeded to the life of a university student. The
sharing with Datuk ended with a Q and A session. Three representatives
from different universities asked him questions regarding their life as a
student.

In the afternoon, the delicious lunch prepared was enlightened more

with the presence of other IEM Student Sections from Universiti Putra
Malaysia, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Universiti Tenaga Nasional, and
Universiti Institut Teknologi Mara in one table. Each person shared their
own backgrounds and progress of their Student Sections. Later, an
informal meeting was initiated by Vivekasugha Alif, the Director of
Students Affair IEM. The contents of the meeting were on the upcoming
events of Student Sections such as the National Summit and IEM Family
Day. Some universities also brought up some issues regarding new
members registration. The programme ended at around 2pm in the
evening.
