CHAPTER I.

WHAT IS THERE MENTAL FASCINATION "?

For 'Fascination' means' the act of fascinating, or the state of being fascinated. "
The word "charm" comes from the Latin "fascinare ', which means' captivated,
charmed, enchanted by the view or the word; captivate, attract, "etc. The definition
of the English word "fascinate" (charm) is as follows: "Apply action by some
influence on other powerful or irresistible; influence for an irresistible charm; cajole,
push, irresistibly or powerfully; enchant, captivate or attract powerfully; affect the
imagination, the reason or the will of others, in an uncontrollable way; enthrall,
captivate or attract irresistibly or powerfully. "
These definitions are taken from different vocabularies of the best and give us the
meaning of the idea expressed by the word "fascination".
My definition. In this guide I will use the word "Mental Fascination" in the following
sense: The action of a Force Mental powerfully influence the imagination, the desire
or the will of others. This is my definition in its broadest sense, including various
phenomena of personal magnetism, psychological influence, hypnotism,
mesmerism, etc. dell'affascinamento. ; I consider to be only different phases of a
phenomenon produced by a single force. These things are just "spare parts of the
same whole," despite claims to the contrary of those who do not like the ratio of
affinity.
The nature of the Force.
What is the nature of the force that produces what we call mental Fascination and I
have further definitilo as "the action of a force that influences powerfully Mental
imagination, the desire or the will of others? "The Fascination of mind is the
manifestation; what is the nature of Mental strength that influence powerfully?
As you will see in some of the later chapters, many theories have been proposed to
give reason for this force, theories ranging from the "magnetic fluid" the mere
suggestion by the person exercising the influence. Almost all the authors who have
dealt with this subject, have their own pet theory. But, as these theories were to
vary greatly and they were different, the effects were piesso recently the same; and
finding this course, has led us to seek a common basic principle, all operating under
various forms, regardless of the many theories proposed by those who produce the
effects. Like everywhere, here you are repeated until the old story.
Such finds that he is capable of producing certain phenomena, using certain
methods. For a bit 'of time working in the practical field, trying to perfect his
methods and au nentare the variety and effectiveness of the phenomena. Having

carried out in this direction, he tries to find a theory that would explain the facts in
question; and it is here that he usually makes the mistake, elaborating some
fantastic theory that seems likely to give reason of the effect, then trying to adapt
the facts to theory. If the facts do not conform conveniently, too bad for them, he
discards those that do not fit, or pretends to ignore or deny them. This is generally
the method used by all theoretical. Finally it located an individual who has a more
scientific mind, examining the facts reported and discovers the true principle
underlying each of them and reconcile the various theories so original that differ
from each other by means of a new synthesis that connects the true principles
existing in all other theories, eliminating prejudices or preconceptions favorites of
the previous authorities. And so it is also the case, as we shall see, the Fascination
mental.
The underlying theory.
In this book I will not have much to say about the theory. I explained the theory and
the principle underlying the Fascination of mind, in my major work entitled "The
Secret of Mental Magic" of which this booklet is only a "supplement artwork." In that
work I explain it that the force underlying all forms of Mental Magic, - and the
Mental Fascination is one of those forms - is the Energy Mentativa Universal, of
which and in which each individual mind is a center of activities. I also explained
that the energy mentativa of each individual mind, and it can be transmitted from
one person to another through mentative currents or waves; and that these tend to
"lead" in the minds of others, the emotions or feelings that exist in states of mind of
the person who emits such waves or currents.
The Mental Poli.
I also explained that there are two poles Mental known as Polo and Polo Emotional
Motive, which respectively show the power of the Will and Power of Desire. The
Modern Science of Desire acts to attract, entice, pull, lure, entice, enthrall, etc. ;
while the power of the Will acts to force, force, push, impose, require, etc.. The
desire to attract more of if its subject, while the Will always subjugates and forces
its object, generally in the sense of drive them to action. In Mental Fascination they
are employed as the Force of Desire with the Power of the Will; generally associated.
The Modern Science of Desire has been called the female phase Mentativa Energy
and the Power of Spirit being male. And even in this, as in all other things, the
association of two qualities produces the results you most remarkable. The scholar,
reading examples of Mental Fascination reported in this volume, will become able to
distinguish between the respective actions of these two phases of the force.
That's all I have to say in this book regarding the theory, except for the different
points highlighted by the examples set forth herein. For more details about the

theory and principles, I must postpone scholars to my work, "The Secret of Mental
Magic." This volume deals with the "How? "Rather than the" Why? .

CHAPTER II.
MENTAL FASCINATION AMONG THE ANIMALS.
Even before the human race had evolved, the Mental Fascination was instinctively
known from the lower forms of life. It says that the cells, in the blood of a living
being, they realize their mutual presence at such distances, to exclude any
"awareness" of the ordinary senses. Not only do they recognize or 'perceive' the
presence of each other, but it seems that they are attracted to the guillemot
towards each other by some force or fascination, which must act in the field of
desire and will. Distinguished scientists tell us that, even atoms, exhibit a mutual
attraction that varies in degree depending on their respective natures. And these
same authorities also tell us that this attraction work in the sense of a "desire" to
each other and a "will" that pushes towards each other. Is it not reasonable to
suppose that in this instinctive manifestation of Attraction and in response the same
attraction between atoms, we find the basic principle of mental Fascination of
Attraction and magnetic in relation to the human phenomenon itself, through a long
series links of a great chain?
The two phases. But, leaving aside the question above, we can find a wealth of
evidence among the most advanced forms of "lower animals." Among the animals
we find numerous examples of the power "to enchant" or "charm" and I believe that
these two forms are only two variants of manifestation of Mental Fascination, in the
sense in which I use that term, that is: "The action of a mental strength that
influence powerfully the imagination, the desire or the will of others. " This mental
Fascination among animals is manifested in two fields, namely: 1) in the field of
Desire, working towards the manifestation of sex, which the conquest of the
partner, etc. ; and 2) in the field of the Will, working in the sense of subduing prey,
such as the snake that "fascinated" the birds, the tiger that "fascinates" lesser
animals, etc. These cases may be widely discussed and demonstrated; and natural
history gives us full authority to accept them.
Examples of animal Fascination.
I recently read the report of a naturalist; He said that being a day in a tropical
region, observed a winged insect flying around a scorpion. After a while the insect is
lowered several times desperately toward the scorpion, as animated by a frantic
desire to break the spell, but soon pulled him and the scorpion if devoured. Many
travelers tell us that being suddenly faced with a lion, a tiger or a leopard, they feel

like they have paralyzed legs, and the animal's eyes seem to have a charm and a
special power over them. I saw a mouse show the same emotion in the presence of
a cat or another similar enemy. On the other hand, each observer will have noticed
the wonderful power "fascinating" exercising the animals on their own kind of the
opposite sex. If you have observed sometimes the way to woo the birds during the
period of love, you will have acquired a keen sense of reality! power used. One of
the birds, and can be as much the male as the female, will be seen in the act of
"charm" or "enchanted" to the opposite sex, which stand still, with wings quivering
and with a look of abandonment in the eye. If this attitude could compare with the
one that would have the same bird in front of a snake charmer, it would be seen
that a striking similarity.
Scientific testimony.
I have before me a book written in 1847, which tells a lot of these examples the
mental Fascination among the lower animals. There will report some, as briefly as
possible. He cites Professor Silliman that tells how one day, to cross the Hudson
River in Catskill, passed by a narrow road flanked by the river on one side and
bushes on the other. His attention was drawn to was the view of several birds of
different species, flying back and forth from one side of the road, rolling strangely
and, peeping desperately, aimed at a particular point of it. Upon examination, the
professor saw a huge black snake, curled up half and half erect, showing a great
animation, eyes blazing as the brightest diamond and tongue dardeggiarne. This
snake was the center of the movement of birds. The professor adds that, although
the snake had disappeared between the bushes, frightened by the approach of
man, the birds seemed still so petrified that they could not escape, and rested on
the bushes nearby, waiting obviously the reappearance of their "charmer".
Enchantment of snakes.
The same book narrates the incident to an individual in Pennsylvania; He saw a
huge black snake that was fascinating a bird; This described circles shrinking around
the snake, emitting at the same time pitiful cries. He was about to fall into the
throat of the snake, when the man drove the latter; then the bird flew off with a
song of joy. It is said also the case of a squirrel that ran up and down between a
brook and a large tree a few meters away. His fur was bristling and gave signs of
fear and anguish. Searching for its cause, he saw the head and neck of a
rattlesnake, which jutted out from the hollow tree and stared directly squirrel. Poor
bestiuola finally stopped the fight and, succumbing to the charm, he jumped off and
fell on his head close to the mouth of the serpent. This was about to swallow it,
when his meal was interrupted by the whiplash of the observer and the squirrel,
freed from the spell, ran away in a hurry.
Interesting examples.

Dr. Good is remembered for having done a real study on the strange power of
fascination that rattlesnakes have on small animals such as birds, squirrels, hares,
etc. He tells how these animals seem unable to look away from the eyes of the
snake and that, as Lottino apparently to escape, they gradually approach the snake
as pushed toward him, or attracted by a power greater than their natural instinct.
He continues to say that the animal, crawling gets closer and closer, until it is drawn
into the mouth of the serpent that, during all that time, remained open to receive it.
Even Dr. Barrow said many similar cases known by farmers around the world.
Valliant, the African traveler, said he saw a magpie marine fascinated remotely by a
big snake, whose glowing eyes and mouth open when approached by degrees the
bird, shaking convulsively and emitted shrieks acute and distressing. The traveler
killed the snake; but when he went to pick up the bird, she found him dead, perhaps
fear, or killed by the power of the serpent, or even by the violent break the spell. He
measured the distance between the snake and the bird was three and a half feet.
Strange tales.
In one of the first reports of the Philosophical Society, it tells a case where, as an
experiment, a rat was placed in a cage with a viper. At first the mice seemed
agitated, but this state was followed by that of the charm and the little animal
began to approach slowly to the viper, he was motionless, her throat wide open and
his eyes twinkling, until actually went into the gorge itself and was devoured .
Bruse, the African traveler, says that the indigenous tribes of an internal, appears to
be protected by nature against the bites of scorpions and vipers. They are holding,

sometimes they are so exhausted by this invisible power of fascination that die
shortly after. He says: "I have been observing that the Viper, just grabbed by one of
those wild, seems struck by illness and weakness, and often closes his eyes and
never bite the hounds which holds, as prior was full of life" .
"Snake Charmer".
I have personally seen a similar case. As a child, in Maryland, I met a farmer, who
was called "the snake charmer." I never managed to find out how he did it, but he
exercised a certain kind of influence on snakes, including poisonous ones, who
remained as fascinated before him, until, with a quick movement, he grabbed them
by the neck with bare hand. Generally this man was carrying some small snakes for
company. They seemed very happy, and when the farmer was talking to someone,
stuck his head out of his pocket, to see who was there. The Negroes of the farm had
a mortal fear of this man and preferred to do rather than the miles pass by her
house.

Fascination of wild animals.

There are undoubtedly of individuals who have the power to enchant animals, dogs
and wild beasts, to a varying degree. Many have certainly known some individuals
capable of "enchanting", as if by magic, the more untamed horses. I read the case
of some nocturnal thieves able to quell the fiercest watchdogs. The writer svedere
Lindecrantz, said that some Lapps possess the power to fascinate the dogs, to a
degree that intimidate even the most wild, making them flee, terribly frightened.
Many of my readers will have heard of the so-called "bisbigliatori" of horses, which
are a bit 'everywhere in this country. They are close in a barn with a proud and
indomitable horse and, with their simple "whisper" come to tame it and make it
completely passive to their will.
He charmed by a snake.
They are also reported cases in which humans suffered "the spell" of a snake and
then narrated their experience. One of these, said that while he was walking in his
garden, he found himself suddenly in front of a snake whose eyes gleamed in a
special way. He was fascinated, like a spell, unable to tear his eyes from the animal.
As he said later, it seemed that the snake grow continuously and assume in quick
succession, several bright colors. It was seized as vertigo and would have fallen
next to the snake, if, at that time, his wife had not approached him and, embracing
him, he had not broken the spell. It also tells of an individual who was found by his
partner, standing in the middle of the road, staring intently into those of a large
rattlesnake, with head erect staring at him with shining eyes. The man was leaning
towards the snake and would fall between its coils. Meanwhile complained weakly,
but mercifully, saying: << I bite! "<< I kill you! << Certainly that will kill you,"
cried his friend, why do not we run away? Why standest stay? . But the other
looked completely petrified and could not answer. Finally his partner grabbed a stick
and hits the snake slithered away hissing. The fascination was shocked for several
hours.
A personal experience.
When I was a boy I also found myself in a similar, although not as serious. Walking
one day under the trees of a grove belonging to my grandfather, I was forced to
look intently at a snake about two feet long and whose eyes shone like large
diamonds. I did not see anything, except those terrible eyes shining and showed all
their prismatic colors to my terrified eyes. He lasted only a moment, fortunately,
because the snake slithered away, apparently as anxious as me, to get away. I can
not say if I would be able to break the spell by myself, if the snake was gone What I
remember now, after thirty years, it is that I had no sense of fear after the first
impression and not tried other emotion, besides a great wonder and awe, derived

from what I saw in those eyes.

An elemental force.
But I have talked enough about the manifestation of Mental Fascination among the
lower animals. There are many interesting examples of this species, in the pages of
books that deal with the lives of animals, and almost tulle those who lived in the
forests or among the wild, have witnessed similar adventures that can illustrate this
fact. I mentioned these characteristics only in order to demonstrate that it is a
natural principle general, manifested through a whole life; This book, however,
deals with only the manifestation of this force among men. To conclude this chapter,
I want to draw readers' attention on the similarity that is found in the manifestation
of this force, both among animals than among men.
Pets endeavor this force for two purposes. "That is to win a mate and cattucare prey.
And for what purpose they use humans? For the same reasons! Yes, I say, though it
may seem strange. The charm used to attract a person of the opposite sex, perhaps

use of the fascination in order to influence other human beings in business, or
personal interests, is not akin perhaps "the spell" of wild animals, snakes, etc. make

CHAPTER IV.
RECONCILIATION.
In the previous chapter I explained the conflicting theories of the different schools
that have made the investigations and experiments in the field of Mental
Fascination, as under different names. Each of these schools the results you
obtained in spite of the different theories and often diametrically opposed; and,
remember well, the same kind of results. Furthermore, these were obtained from
them almost in the same way, as is evident if we examine the very essence of the
procedure, after having eliminated the overlapping shapes, to suit the particular
theories of the operators.

A new synthesis.
I believe that all these conflicting theories of the different schools, can be reconciled
in a new synthesis; the Energy Mentativa with his accidental phenomenon Induction
Mentativa, as I explained in my work on the c <Mental Magic "and developed
further in this manual. I believe that so far divergent theories, such as those of the
Universal Fluid
Magnetic Mesmer; Sleep Abbot Faria; hypnotism of Braid; electro-Biology of Bovee
Dods; of Suggestion of Liebault and Bernheim; the more of Suggestion without
sleep; the Fascination of Bremand; and all other advocated by Mesmer on, can be
reconciled and harmonized by a acculala applying theory Induction Mentativa, I
exposed in my work on "Mental Magic". And I believe that all phenomena obtained
from these various schools, as well as those of the ancient charmers; and those
known as "Personal Magnetism," "Enchantment." "Personal Influence," "magnetic
personality", etc. of ancient and modern times, they can be explained by the same
theory. This section therefore will be dedicated to the reconciliation of various old
theories with principle-based Induction Mentativa.
Mesmer explained.
Let us first examine the facts underlying the theory of Mesmer's Magnetic Fluid
Universal. Mesmer taught that there was a special fluid thin nature of "magnetic",
spread through all the space and that permeated everything; it was able to receive
and transmit any kind of movements and impressions. Also he taught that this
"fluid", flowed freely from one body to another, acting at a distance and could be
reflected by a mirror, etc. He did not explain what it was this "fluid", but said only
that it was producing the effect "magnetic" and therefore had to be magnetic in
nature. Also he proved to be able to have an effect and exhibited a theory to give
reason of the facts themselves, adequate theory to the general understanding of
those times.
Let us now apply the theory of Mesmer the idea Mentativa Universal Energy with its
accidental phenomenon Induction Mentativa and we will see how easy
reconciliation. The Energy Mentativa as the "fluid" of Mesmer, is universal; It has
spread throughout space and permeates everything. Similar to the "fluid" it
apparently goes from body to body and communicates impressions, etc. But now we
know that the energy is transmitted by waves or vibrations, which reproduce in the
other person feel through original Induction Mentativa. There is the need of the
passing of "fluid", as it is necessary that an "electric fluid" flow on telegraph wires or
through the air. The idea of "fluid" was surpassed by that of the "waves", both in
physics as in metaphysics.
The nature of the "Magnetic Fluid." We shall soon see that this theory of Mesmer's

"magnetic fluid" can be explained by the theory of Energy and Induction Mentativa
Mentativa. There is a fluid "magnetic". Mental energy is, both in its nature than in
the way it operates; and the phenomena derived from it are well mentation.
Mesmer sought the answer in physics; but we find it in metaphysics. This force is
not physical but rather mental. All phenomena obtained by Mesmer and his
followers, can be explain them by the theory of Energy and Induction Mentativa. (Iii
mental states of mesmerizer can be communicated to his "subject" through waves
of Energy Mentativa; and a feeling or mental sialo correspondent, is induced by
induction Mentativa. Proceeding we will see that the 'sleep' 'she Mesmerizzatori and
Mesmer is simply a condition caused, arising from the desire exists in the mind of
the operator, accompanied by the Suggestion.
Faria explained.
The theory of the Abbot Faria, that the condition of "sleep" is not the resultalo of an
external force, but it comes from inside the patient himself, agrees with the theory
of Energy Mentativa and Induction. Of course the "sleep" comes from the inside of
the patient, but is induced by the waves Energy Mentativa operator, together with
its active suggestions.
Reconciliation of Braid.
Even the theory of Braid accords with earlier. He believed that the phenomenon was
of a physical rather than mental and it was a physical action reflected arising from
the fixity of the eyes, muscle stiffness, etc. His hypnotic sleep was undoubtedly
increased by the exercise of ease eye strain and muscle, based on! principle that a
greater fatigue of the eyes, for example, what it feels like visiting galleries,
museums, foreign cities, etc., produces greater mental fatigue and that,
consequently being weakened the power of resistance, the suggestions of mental
waves are more easily Accepted. Few are those who do not feel "exhausted" after
visiting a museum, or after witnessing a long military magazine, or a modern
representation of a circus where eseguiscono difficult and dangerous balance
exercises. And who does not remember having done silly things at a time of a
"fatigue" that will not be able to resist the charm and influence of the environment?
A warning sign.
Many a girl has ruined because of subtle suggestions and influence exerted on her
by some unfortunate met one evening at "spellacelo" or the circus, or visiting some
views of a foreign city. I assure you, my friends, that in such cases the Will, tires for
excessive use of their forces in doing a job that you are not used to it "fog" and
becomes unable to resist attacks. As I said in my main Opera, beware of

Braid's theory may agree with one 'idea Mentativa Energy and Induction, when we
see that the fixity of the eyes and muscle stiffness are simply the means to produce
a "state of suggestibility'; that is, a condition in which the suggestions are more
easily accepted and currents mentative are readily received; in both cases it is the
Will fatigued that allows entry to outside influence.
The explanation of the "Suggestion"
Theories of Suggestion, if rightly understood, do not conflict with those of the
'Energy
Mentativa and 'Induction. The facts exposed by Suggestionatori are indisputable,
but they make the mistake of ignoring the mental states of Suggestionatore same.
They think that the effects to their performance, are produced only by the
Suggestion and forget the mental state below the Suggestion that is the real driving
force. If their theories are right, because two individuals who use the same words of
suggestion, working on the same subject, obtained effects of varying degrees? This
is because the Mental States, or supply dynamics, the two individuals differ in
quality and grade.
The Suggestionatore believes simply to direct his "Suggestion" by words, etc. at the
subject; but, in reality, he radiates a continuous stream of energy that moves
quickly Mentativa subject's state of mind you want. Best Suggestionatori are those
who have purchased the "Suggestive Way", which develops through the year,
collisisi body in uttering words orders and authoritarian; physical appearance, the
manner and tone match and reflect the state of mind within. I proved this in the
case of one of the most famous Suggestionatori

years 1900-1901. I have seen this doctor give the most powerful influences in one
of his classes or clinics and the emanations of Energy Mentativa.
Currents were so powerful that the students of the class could "hear" distinctly and
sometimes even "see them." Yet this doctor, who was attached to his particular
theory of Suggestion pure and simple, after such a wonderful event, stated with
confidence, in front of his class, that "it was not merely of Suggestion, only
Suggestion." And he was persuaded, but hundreds of students who attended his
classes, came out strongly believe that it was "something more"; that there was an

underlying cause to his "suggestions". The theory of Suggestion is right; but what
there is behind it? Where does his strength? The Suggestion of inward and invisible
thing which is the visible aspect and exterior? Dell 'Energy Mentatval

And my theory Energy Mentativa and induction, can be reconciled with the theories
of the latest Suggestionatori, including those who still adhere to the illusion of
"sleep", as those who have crossed. And it explains all the phenomena of the
ancient with their religious rites and mystical. The phenomena of 'Enchantment, the
Fascination, of Personal Magnetism, of' Personal Influence, etc., Are all included in
the theory expounded in this book and in my major work that precedes it.
Continuing in this book, we will see the Energy Mentativa and Induction Mentativa in
current and active action in these various phases of phenomena; but I trust that this
chapter will have shown that there is an underlying principle in all these theories
and all these phenomena; and that the facts of Energy Mentativa and his
phenomenal work in the accident Induction Mentativa, are sufficient to include all
the various manifestations of force which is observed in the different aspects of
theories of the various schools and sects in conflict with each other . There is an
underlying cause and Energy Mentativa. There is a law that underlying operations of
this force, so as to strike the minds of others; and this law is the induction Mentativa
direct, either, that is, through mentative currents, is indirect, ie by Suggestioni or,
(as is the case in general), by means of the combination of both.

CHAPTER VI.
Impressionability.
In the last chapter I have explained the principles of the mode of operation of
Mental Fascination and particularly in its early stages of Mesmetismo. The scholar
who has followed my presentation, will certainly have found that there have to be a
marked difference in the degree of impressionability, or Accommodation Mentativa
induction, so that in the operator in the subject, because the phenomenon may
occur. But this difference in degree of impressionability is shown by all, men and
women. Between an extreme point and the other in scale dell'impressionabilit,
there are many degrees and everyone has their own, of course, subject to change
with the development.

Magnetic positivity.
I will quote from my work "Mental Magic," a song that illustrates this point, and that
is: I do not mean that the degree of positivity Magnetic perrmanentemente is fixed
in each one, because, in fact, the opposite occurs. One of the two individuals who
really is the strongest in general, may be weaker in that particular moment,
because his will is tired, or because he has relaxed his Power of Will, as often
happens. And in such cases, the won may be the winner-The last meeting or even
can regain his energy at the last minute and so reverse the position. An individual
may have a strong will in times of activity and can instead relax you a lot in times of
liabilities. And this is something even more important: he can thus increase their
Power of Will so that they can totally dominate those that previously dominated it
and, perhaps, the intimidated. All we have personally experienced similar cases.
The two extremes.
At the extreme point of Positivity Mentativa are men who are especially wonderful
Willpower and these are the "natural leaders" and the Masters. At the extreme point
of Negativity Mentativa, there are those who are sensitive to any suggestion or
current mental, with which may possibly come into contact; impressionable those
individuals who seem to live in the emotional level of their being, and who are
always ready to receive any external influence, such as weather vanes that move
with the slightest breeze. These are really the reflection of thoughts, desires and
wishes of others; the last person that attracts their attention is the one that,
according to them, "you have to" follow. You all know these types, is not it?
I will not say what, only those who have a weak-willed by nature, can be
mesmerized. But I say that when individuals from the strong will mesmerize you
leave voluntarily, must relax their will and become passive or negative front of the
operator, otherwise they will not get any site in. A strong-willed individual must
voluntarily relax and become negative in order to be mesmerized. I saw him do that
in many cases, although I was always against, because I think it is advisable to
submit their will in a similar way, even for the purpose of scientific investigations. I
would never do that cerium and therefore I can not even approve that others face.
The artistic temperament.
I have also seen people with an "artistic temperament" highly developed, like
actors, poets, painters, writers and others who, although they have a strong will,
have become "emotional" because of their active imaginations. That is, they allow

Who can exercise the Fascination.
The person of average evolution that has strength and self-confidence, can exercise

which must be taken into account. It is true that individuals physically weak and
sickly, have exerted a powerful fascination; but this occurred despite the lack of
health and as a result of a strong will, which enabled them to overcome even this
obstacle. But on equal terms, in the one that is healthy, strong and vigorous, there
is a power that is felt.
2) Confidence in himself; since without it no manifest positivity. Have confidence in
your power and in your abilities and give that confidence in others. Safety is
contagious. Always cultivate the idea: "I can and I will."
3) Balance; because the individual calm, balanced, imperturbable always has a
huge advantage over one who lacks these qualities. One that addresses any
eventuality without "losing the canvas", has a "thing," that I do consider the other
as a natural leader; - He has one of the qualities of positivity. Grown calm and
mastery of yourself.
4) intrepidity; for fear in humans is the most negative emotion. Courage is a quality
eminently positive, while fear is the most negative. Cultivated in yourself the
courage, "I do, - I dare."
5) Concentration; because this option allows you to focus the power of the Will on
your goal. Do one thing at a time; and work at it mourning the power that is in you.
6) Firmness of Purpose; because you must learn to know what you want to do and
then to do applicarvici accomplished. Cultivated firmness of purpose, because it is a
very necessary quality. To those who recognize the need of the qualities stated
above, but what they lack, I recommend careful study and application of the firm
Principles "Mental Architecture," as are described in the seventh lesson of my work
on "Mental Magic", in which the issue is discussed in detail with examples,
exercises, etc.

Demonstration of absurdity.
Many crazy things have been written by various authors on mesmerism, hypnotism,
etc., on how to "make easy subjects", etc .; and they have been shown many
ridiculous rules holder for assessing the degree of impressionability. Some say that
women are more emotional brown, while others assert that blondes give faster, etc.,
etc. ; but experimenters serious laugh at such distinctions. Some believe that
women are the best subjects, while others claim that men are more easily
influenced. For my part I think the percentage is nearly the same in both sexes. Also
you have to remember that the degree of impressionability is relative. For example,
A can be positive in front of B, while B may be opposite to C, and so on. And, using
the same illustration, M is negative in front of L, as positive in front of No. Do you
understand?
A lie revealed.
Some writers have tried to make people believe that only individuals from "strong
mind" can be mesmerized, giving as evidence of this, the fact that the idiots and
lunatics are almost immune from the influence hypnotic and mesmerizing. This is
one of the favorite topics of professional hypnotists, that seek to appease their
subjects, or possible individuals who may wish not to appear as individuals from
"weak mind." The real reason that individuals of these classes are free is: 1) Why
the idiots have little or no power of attention and are as simple machines, so they
can not be induced to pay attention, for long enough, to mesmerization; However,
all advanced students know that Influenza mental idiots, like animals, can be
affected by vibrations or waves Mental Health Mental, etc. through "care"; 2) The
insane are generally owned by "fixed idea" or a disappointment and are, in fact,

people often give way, to some degree, with strong suggestions and mental care;
for which the rule does not always correspond.
Impressionable individuals.
The class of individuals that yields faster mesmeric influence (except the subclass of
persons of strong imagination which we have already spoken, is that of those who
Barino poorly developed their own will, their determination and self-confidence
themselves. People who have led a life that was cultivated 1 'implicit obedience and
they did always rely on others, are the most highly impressionable. They have not
made use of their will and are more readily dominated by the will of others, or from

their emotions. As I said in my major work: "the degree of responsiveness to the

Suggestion by Command" appears in the highest degree in those who are always
stali subjected to other, from which they have received and receive orders and
instructions and that, in their lives, they never had to sharpen their wits, will make
use of its resources. The inept workers and the children of wealthy families, who
have always been those who have thought for them, often belong to this class. It
seems that these individuals are in need of someone to think for them, even in the
most insignificant events in their life and they are the most impressionable. So
considering those who have always acted alone, without depending on others, we
will see that in them the degree of positivity is affirmed. The greater positivity is
found in those who have had to employ other and that during their lifetime, have
had to rely on their own resources and their own ingenuity. Men of great initiative
are rarely a hint of this form of suggestibility. "Initiative", as you know, means "to do
something without being ordered" employing their ingenuity, their resources and
the will. All this applies equally to the subject "dell'impressionabilit" mesmeric
influence; and it means namely, that the degree of impressionability depends on the
degree of lack of development of the Will. Will the word is the keynote; and this,
despite all the talk, all chatter and nonsense said and written by those who have an
interest that the public appreciate the wonderful virtues (?) of hypnotism.
The "Spirit of the mass."
The reason why the crowd swayed, is that it abandons its own individuality and its
Individual Will, leaving this s'immedesimi with the will of the other, until the result is
a "Will the Mass" which represents an average the crowd, because the weakest will
dilute the strength of the entire mass. When this mixture will weakened zone is
enough, it remains in a state of excitement, until an individuality emerges - a chief
conductor or men who maintained their individual Will, and this Will imprints of the
negative of the crowd; and so the mass accept its suggestions and follows him like a
flock of sheep or as subjects mesmerized and obey his commands, as long as other
leaders fail to captivate her attention and her interest.
Emotionality.
There is another phase of mentality that rests on the degree of impressionability. I
allude to the quality known as "emotionality". He says emotional one who rejects
more readily the influence of his will and his reason and abandons himself to the
influence of the emotional side of his nature. It is more emotional than those who
are not so emotional, but that will not really stronger. The reason is that, because of

the fact that some breeds are more "emotional" than others, that are more

Who is a '' emotional? .
In the following chapters will work the term "emotional" to indicate an individual's
emotional enough to suffer, to a greater or lesser degree, the influence of a
mesmerizer or hypnotist. These "emotional" are relatively easy to receive
impressions of the Force Mentativa and suggestions of the investigator in this field.
Please remember the feeling that I am giving to this expression. More lards I will
work the term "hyper-emotional 'to mean an individual excessively or abnormally
emotional mesmeric influence. This last class will be described further at the time,
in this volume.
I let me illustrate with a story the subject dell'impressionabilit. This will be the
topic of the next chapter, which will be titled: "The story of a couple Mentativa." It
elucidate not only the fact of responsivity mesmeric influence, but will throw a new
light on the exercise of influence mental staff that takes place daily around us,
always and everywhere. You will make a much better idea of this fact, after reading
this tale; and the lesson it will teach you, you will be more on guard. Do not forget
to read it carefully and try to find the hidden meaning between the lines.

CHAPTER VII.
THE TALE OF THE COUPLE MENTATIVA.
Once upon a time in the land of Mentalvania a magnificent building called the Castle
Mentativo. where lived a man and a woman called the "Couple Mentativa." They
were happy, though married. They lived in harmony because it helpful to each other
and neither of them felt the full if the other was missing, he did his best work
without the presence of the other.
Volos and Emotione.
Well, the man's name "Volos" (which is gnifica Will) and the woman was called
"Emotione ', which, in the language of that country, it means a combination of
Emotion, Desire and Imagination.
The two Nature.

The annals inform us that these two people were completely different in nature from
each other. Volos was rigid, inflexible, strong, positive, tenacious in the fulfillment of
something once begun; full of "will to live" and "vitality"; resolute and full of spirit,
imperious in his manner, always ready to meet difficulties and overcome obstacles,
always ready to try to get what they wanted Emotione; and also he had a powerful
self-esteem and self-confidence. He was inclined to firmness, as this was not the
stubbornness of a mule, and the keynote was Force. It was a good warrior and
defender of his castle. Emotione instead was completely diverssa as type,
temperament and character. Emotional the highest degree, imaginative, emotional,
credulous, fantastic, full of desires, curious, friendly and easy to persuasion. While
Volos was all Will and thought it was all Emotione Feeling.
Fire and Water.
Volos was a strong character, but lacked certain qualities necessary for success;
Emotione possessed these qualities, and so it made up for the deficiencies of Volos.
These had to "work out and think about everything," while Emotione who owned
Intuition, was received directly at the end in a way incomprehensible to Volos. When
asked for an explanation to Emotione, she said simply, "Oh it's so! "And this answer
provoked dissertations often irreverent and profane by Volos. But nevertheless, he
had learned to respect these 'thus' of of Emotione and found that he had help in his
business. Emotione dreamed and foresaw the events long before they happened
Volos and then acted accordingly. Volos could not see very far from your nose while
Emotione saw many miles away and many years in advance. And beyond this
faculty of Mental Imagination, which could as useful in the affairs of Volos, it had a
burning desire that was trying to communicate in Volos, pushing him to do things
that otherwise would never have dreamed of doing. Emotione was similar to Volos
Fire and Water. The water restrained the fire, but at the same time, the fire warmed
the water; and the site in the steam that was put in motion the machinery of Action.
And so this Couple Mentativa formed excellent Cooperative and prospered greatly.
Enter the Tempter.
But alas! The tempter came to Eden and attractive Forestiero headed for the Castle
Mentativo; and when he arrived there he brought distress. And here's what
happened:
Castle helpless.
One day Volos was away from home, being engaged in some tough business and,
consequently, the castle was left helpless. Volos, however, had provided warning
Emotione kept closed all the doors while he was away and not to look out ever,
because there were some mysterious dangers lurking when he was not present.
Emotione had faithfully followed the orders of his Lord, although the idea of that

danger tease her feminine curiosity. Many voile had heard strange knocking on the
door of the Castle, but it is not if it was taken care of and had even refrained from!
watching the little eye practiced in the door, as in contrast to his desire, not
sembrandole that in this there was no harm.
The Stranger charmer.
That day, however, while Volos was away from home, the curiosity was too strong
for Emotione and, when she heard a knock at the door, he could not help but throw

Well, long story short, when Volos returned home he found that Emotione had

How Volos made a mistake.

and conjuring tricks. Then one of the acrobats of the Company (which was none
other than the attractive stranger in disguise) slipped unseen, near Volos, and a
moment later he was engaged in a lively conversation with the emotional Emotione.
Volos was watching the crowd until this walked away and then went into the house,
closing the door behind him and found himself face to Emotione that was all in
tears, fearing the approaching storm. "Oh, poor me!" She cried, "I again put in a
predicament, or Volos, my Lord! I ordered now at Forestiero fascinating, that has
gone unnoticed near you, a Radio-carburetor, a spinet, a baby grand Baby Grand,
with automatic valves for liquid air, on which I shall be able to play all kinds of
music, to starting with the Twilight of Del Wagner up to air popular "Kiss your baby,
goodbye! )>, With deep feeling, expression and deep spiritual understanding; so he

But alas! Another time the poor Volos were deceived and the stranger, having
mocked him, fascinated again poor Emotione. And it happened so.
His last wrongdoing.
On the day of his last wrongdoing, Volos sat on the steps outside, in front of the
open door of the Castle. "Now no one will pass in front of me," he shouted. But fate
decided otherwise. Because, while he was sitting there, they approached several

people who sat on the steps outside the front door and started discussions a warm
and difficult discussion on supervision of the crop, on the presidential campaign, the

dozing, the Forestiero charming (who was none other than the head of the company
of those visitors who had committed the live discussion) crept into the house and

The danger of separation.
"And beyond that, the one without the other becomes prey to Fascinatori of

centered in a way that does not let him see any other thing; it was as if he had been
absent. And even when Volos drifted from Intavolata discussion with him from the
company of visitors and spent all his energy and strength in discussions with the

himself to be overcome with weariness and sleep , falling asleep on the spot. So the

The remedy of the Wise.

success, my dear Couple Mentativa; mortgage work through desire and will, work in

Morality.
And the moral of the story on Couple Mentativa is this: The Mind of every individual,
man or woman, and a Castle Mentativo they inhabit a Volos and a Emotione; and
what happened to the couple in the fable, it can happen and it happens, many in
daily life. Will diverted from home and attracted to things outside, leaves the castle
unprotected, allowing entry to the Foreign charmer. Or it is distracted by the sight of
interesting objects and forget the door of the Castle. It also happens that it is tired
and sfibri with useless discussions, speeches, reflections, instigated by the Foreign
charmer, in order to implement its own plan that is to be introduced in the door. And
in each of these cases, beyond the door is Emotione, defenseless and innocent,
sincere to their nature, credulous, imaginative, whimsical, full of desires and
emotions; and so it is little wonder that it will give "orders" do not want the family.
And the remedy of the Wise for Couple Mentativa, can be and should be applied by
all, men and women, to their mental Castle. And then this is the moral of the story.

CHAPTER VIII.
EXPERIMENTAL FASCINATION.
In this book I will give the student an idea of the way to do experimental work in this
phase of Fascination which was called "Mental impression" etc., following the tracks
of the best detectives and investigators in Europe and America. The reason I do it is
because the student can get an idea of the practical work, although it does not do
for yourself such experiments. I believe that everyone should be aware of such
things as scientific facts, and also for the purpose of self-protection that comes from
the understanding of the subject.

Explanation of surprising phenomena.

I wish also to show the student investigator that the facts trial and phenomena that
have been considered so far by the general public as inseparably united to
mesmerism, hypnotism and "sleeping conditions" can be played without the help of
" sleeping conditions "and no tricks of the public.
All the phenomena of mesmerism, hypnotism, etc. They can be produced using
simple scientific methods in the field of Mental Fascination, by inducing Mentativa,
without any attempt to produce the "sleep" as a necessary prerequisite. When this
fact is fully understood by the public, the fake glow and sensationalism product
representations mesmeric and hypnotic public will vanish; and such person shall
have the scientific consideration it deserves. But, at the same time, the public will
begin to realize the great power of Influence Mental, able to produce such amazing
events in the waking state and will try to defend themselves from the abuse of this
power.
Representations hypnotic reprehensible
It would not be necessary to add that I have no sympathy for these public
performances of this phase of mental impression, known by the names of
"Hypnotism" "Mesmerize", etc, in which the subjects are passive to all kinds of
experiments stupid and absurd. Not considering my disapproval the fact to subject
their will to that of others, I have the feeling that these representations are lacking
in good taste, and often even of decency. The least one can say is that a scientific
phenomenon it is a "plaything." I have no sympathy for these events and
representations; and I will not speak of them in this book, but to blame the methods
used.
Scientific methods.
In my observations and instructions on this subject, in the field of scientific
methods, according to the best authorities, and in harmony with the rules observe
them in direct experiments in the best way possible by those authorities,
experiments which have been there very often, I want my students place
themselves in a mental attitude scientific, precisely as if the conference would
assist in a scientific course on this topic, in some universities. He said subject is
strictly scientific and should be approached, considered and investigated only with
pure spirit of scientific investigation. It's not something to be taken in jest or to
make an idle pastime. I hope I have taken a sufficiently clear in front of all on this
point, and so I hope that there will be no misunderstanding about that.
The importance of knowledge.

I do not recommend all of my students to engage in this experimental work,

because there is no need for them. What I will try really thereof, you will be letting
them know the methods used in these experiments and the results you obtained. In
doing so, they will gain an extensive knowledge of the subject in question, which
will make them "understand" really different phases and thus prevent them from
welcoming misconceptions on the subject. This knowledge will enable them to
become aware of any symptoms that reveal the attempts of others to use on them
this force, in daily life. When an individual comes to know the essence of a thing, so
as to recognize her at any time, there is less danger of falling into error. Such
knowledge is like a battle won by half.
And with such understanding and such an explanation, I will proceed to describe the
work of the Experimental Fascination, which is now carried out by scientific
investigators, in America and in Europe.
Supportive environments.
The investigator Fascination Experimental soon realizes that certain environmental
conditions have a substantial impact for the better or worse of the site in his
experiments. And for that he tries to do his experiments in the best possible
environment, as he learned from his own experience. Knowing these conditions is
an important thing for an investigator and the investigator in this field.
Desirable conditions.
The investigator may find that the best results when experiments are held in a quiet
place where the atmosphere inspires a mental state of calm, tranquility and peace.
This atmosphere affects both the operator as the subject, allowing the first to focus
your mind and on the second turn of the first full attention and put in a state of
mind passive. It is good that these experiments are kept in a room away from the
road and separate as possible from the rest of the house, so that you do not
experience any external noise. The investigator must also take precautions to
prevent being interrupted, because interruptions disturb his concentration and
attention of the subject.
Impression of the senses.
Best experimenters care that the experiment room is mobiliata simply, without
paintings and ornaments, etc., acts to attract the attention of the subject. It
recommends a soft carpet to cushion the sound of footsteps. I saw that
experimenters have even wrapped with rags legs of chairs, tables, etc., to avoid
sudden noises. The room temperature must be confortable, neither too hot nor too

fully fix its attention on the experimenter. I've heard that sometimes, the cold air of

the room and the air currents, have hindered the best experiments; and all
investigators know that a sweltering day is not indicated. Care should be taken that
the room does not filter any ray of light. Are advisable curtains of a soft green or
turquoise and these same colors, they should be used as well for room decorations,
if the experimenter wants to get good results you. Remember the saying: "A soft
light and mystical," and will you do a fair idea.
Psychological effects.
Some experimenters burning in the room, a small dose of incense before beginning
the experiment, because this fragrance tends to calm the nerves and make sense of
the rest present. You can see that the conditions required to produce a good site in
these experiments, are the same as the churches of any kind for their divine
services etc. A mere mention of the fact is sufficient for the thinker. We know very
well that a religious music, sweet and quiet will produce psychological conditions of
impressionability in individuals and some French psychologists have profited from
this fact. The feeling of "comfort" that has to prove the subject, is the foundation on
which rests the whole theory. It is therefore that the chairs must be "confortable"
and "comfortable."
The Cabinet of a famous suggestionatore.
I will conclude my comments on the conditions useful for these experiments,
showing a portion of an article written by me about seven years ago, in a magazine
and signed with a pseudonym. The article describes the cabinet of a famous
suggestionatore during a series of experiments, made in the presence of a class of
investigators and students. I too was there and I think that this description will give
you an idea of the ideal conditions for experiments in this field. I wrote: "The room is
well ventilated and with a good light, though not dazzling. It is considerably quiet
and away from noise, but did not have too look like imprisonment and loneliness.
The impression produced is that of a quiet, old country chapel, during a summer
afternoon, when everything around seems to indicate the non-existence of an
external world and feels only a slight breeze that, from time to time, we caresses
the face and some indistinct sounds that seem to come from a distant point and
perhaps the buzz of some bumblebee hovering lost by accident through the open
door. The air is intensified by the semi-religious "soft light and mysticism" and the
voice of the investigator who gives the patient the suggestions, he repeated the
same monotonous tone, encouraging and hopeful, and sometimes similar to that of
a fervent, fiery prayer. The environment, the quiet, the tone of the operator, the
reclined position of the patient, everything gives the strongest suggestion of quiet,
calm, peace, comfort and rest;
deliverance from every thought, from every anxiety, relief from all pain and
restlessness. - Nirvana. The influence of this picturesque and distinctly felt by the

visitor and also unconsciously assumes the role of assistant in the Chapel. Some
patients have said that soon they forget completely the presence of class and you
feel alone with the operator for all intents and purposes, no other thought except
the suggestions that are given to them. " I might add that the suggesioni given to
the patient at the beginning of the session, they had to in order to increase the
mental state of rest, calm and tranquility desired.
How to determine the impressionability.
The first thing that the investigator is to determine the degree of impressionability
of '' emotional '. There are several ways to determine this. One of the methods,
including those considered to be most effective, is to roll out partially to 'emotional'
arm and the left hand until it is placed in a comfortable position. Then let them hold

Experiment in a room full of people.
Having to experience a lot of people together, such as a room full of people, you

shown to give a great importance to the test and say that you are "just trying their
impressionability", etc. But when you're done, you'll know precisely the degree of
impressionability of each of those who are in the room and you will thus be able to
choose the most emotional for the next experiment.
Impressing the subject.

After choosing the desired number of "emotional", pick one and order him to stand
in front of you, looking at you directly in the eye (see in a later chapter's teachings
to buy the "magnetic eyes") and giving him in a quiet tone but firm and positive,
words like these: "Now porgetemi all your attention. I want you to set your focus
firmly on me and what I say, because only in this way you can get the best results.
You have to forget everything and every person in this room. You have to hear only
my voice and perceive my thoughts. Make yourselves perfectly passive and
receptive to my thoughts and in my words. It must seem as if there was no one here
except you and me. You do not have to see the other, you do not have to hear other
voices, you do not have to have other thoughts besides mine. Porgetemi whole your
attention now and be open to the influence of my thoughts. " Talk to him for a few

To induce relaxation.
Teach him to relax all his muscles, to straighten; Tell him that in doing so, he "takes
away their will by its muscles," which is exactly what happens. If it seems slow to
grasp the idea, give a practical demonstration of the "relaxation", by raising a hand

relaxation. Continue until he has learned what it means to "relax." This exercise will

experiment.
Relaxation exercises. It is of the greatest importance that the subject chosen for the

a reflex action on the mind, according to well-established laws. The following
exercises will help you get the relaxation preparatory to your psychological
experiments:
Exercises. - Teach the subject to withdraw their will by the right hand, to make it
"flexible" to the point that he can make it hang freely from the wrist. Then, have him
swing back and forth. Let him repeat the same exercise with your left hand and then
with both hands all together. Then he must give them a movement of "swing" back
and forth, of course, departing from the wrist and let them swing with flexibility.
Then order him to withdraw the will from his arms and then scuotetegliele and let
them swing from the shoulder down like a pair of empty sleeves. Alzategli the arm

These exercises may be altered and amplified at will.
Put the subject at ease.
Some of the best investigators employ a considerable time in the "put at ease"
those who offer themselves as subjects for psychological experiments and at the
same time seeking to produce in the latter the desired state of relaxation. These
investigators include disgust and fear that always inspires in everyone's mind all
that resembles hypnotism; and this because of public representations and thus
avoid any suggestion similar to those that produce the hypnotic sleep. They
generally start to talk about the value of relaxation and demonstrate while the
subject that few are those who can relax their muscles. This leads to the test of the
mentioned relaxation exercise or rather similar, as you'll see soon, leading to the
first real mental and wise Induction of Suggestion, which is called "the test of falling
forward," and that is one of the simplest known in the psychological laboratory.
From this there are other tests that the next steps. So the investigator begins
actually work with the process of "putting the subject at ease" and train it for
relaxation. In this regard, I would say that there are few who know how to "relax"
and, in most cases, some teaching is necessary. These exercises may be sufficient.
The first test.
After having taught the subject on relaxation, tell him, "Now look at me directly in
the eye and let my thoughts act through you. You feel a certain tendency to fall

Reversing the test.
When you succeeded in this experiment, make yourself standing behind the subject,
about a meter away and concentrate your gaze at a point at the base of his skull,
that is where the head attaches to the neck. Then tell him that he will have the
impression of "falling to 'back', feeling similar to that of the first, during the test of"
falling forward ". Remember to tell him that you will support when it is about to fall
etc. reassuringly. Use a tone similar to the one that you used in the trial of the "fall
forward", with the only difference that you will have to replace the word "forward",
the "back." In a few moments you manage to get the same good site in.
Both experiments indicated, belong to the tests easier known by the investigators,
but they are important because they serve to inspire confidence in the investigator
himself, in his mind and a passive confidence in that of '' emotional ', so it is always
good start with these simple tests and then go step by step to the most difficult,
even on subsequent occasions.
The test of "hand tied."
The next test will be this: Say "all'impressionabile" to place the palm of your hand
over, leave it to stand a few minutes, withdrawing all his will to it and relaxing it
completely as a "dead weight." Tell him that you then bind her hand to your
thought. Then, looking him straight in the eye, you say in a firm tone, positive and

The proof of the attraction.

Similar to this are the following tests: 1) prevent him from walking; and 2) prevent

These tests will be accompanied, naturally, by the suggestions appropriate and the
use of the Will. Remove the impression.
The test of "chair."
Similar tests, such as to prevent him to sit on a chair, or do sit and unable to get up,
can be made in the same way. Remove the impression.
Other tests.
Another common test is to give a stick to '' emotional ', ordering him to keep it tight
and then suddenly, tell him he can not drop it, because it is "attached to his hands",
etc. Remove the impression.
A similar test consists in 'prevent him from lifting a light weight, a box, a chair, by
the suggestion: "You can not," accompanied by the use of your Will. Remove the

impression.
The proof of the name.
Some investigators are testing to prevent '' emotional 'to say their name by the
suggestion: "You can not." A variant of this experiment is to force him to say that is

To make stiff arms or legs it acts the same way, using the appropriate suggestions

Evidence of "trance."
The "fact of trance" of professional hypnotists, is but an extension of the tests
muscle above and is to produce a state of rigidity extends to the whole body of!
subject. I would never recommend doing these tests, because there have been
many times the accidents and there are other reasons why it is advisable to abstain.
I mention this here simply as a fact of scientific interest. As hypnotists pretend that
this evidence can not be obtained when the subject is in a "deep state of hypnosis,"
or "cataleptic state," all the psychologists know that it can be produced in
conditions of complete watches and only a "muscle test" that has nothing to do with
the "sleep state."
An underlying principle.
You will easily see that a law governs all these trials and a thousand others of a
similar nature that can be obtained by the investigator. It is always the use of the
Will and the suggestion of the investigator, accompanied by relaxation of the will of
the subject. The law Induction Mentativa is the real underlying cause of the
phenomenon. The suggestions make doubly efficient power of the Will of the
investigator, giving the mind of '' emotional 'mental image, around which its Poli
Mental materialize into action.
Muscle testing and beyond.

The tests are known as the above mentioned tests and muscle all depend on the
muscle control of '' emotional ', by the will of the experimenter. Many of these tests
are considered by hypnotists and mesmerizzatori as possible to be obtained only
when their "subjects" are in "sleep state", or at least, after being asleep and then
awaken. But in fact, the sleeping conditions have nothing to do with this
phenomenon, as can be proved by the fact that all the evidence indicated above
can be obtained without any suggestion of sleep or similar conditions.
There is a class of the most remarkable phenomena of those mentioned above and
of which we will discuss in the next chapter, which can be well obtained without any
attempt induction of sleep. This illusion of sleep has misled the public for many
years, but now it is known that the phenomenon of sleep itself is simply an effect of
impression and Mental Suggestion, instead of being the cause of various
phenomena known under the name of Mesmerism and Hypnotism.
Remove the impression.
Referring to my repeated warning of "remove the impression," I wish to draw your
attention to the fact that the best investigators attach great importance to the
opportunity, if not the absolute necessity, to remove the conditions created by the
mind of the subject; otherwise he could keep in condition or if the impression
induced, which is often much deeper and stronger than what is commonly believed,
I strongly recommend him in a special way. Do not neglect to do so. The conditions
created can be easily removed by the suggestion: "Now all is well, all right, you
know. For you everything is fine ', accompanying the suggestion with the mental

Remove undesirable conditions.
In this connection we can mention that if you were in the case of meeting with a
"emotional" having the tendency to manifest conditions of drowsiness or the socalled "sleep state" hypnotism (probably derived from earlier suggestions of a direct
hypnotist, or having witnessed some hypnotic session) you can proceed to wake

You probably will not need such advice in the usual experiments, but it will be
helpful if you are facing some "emotional" or "over-emotional" (see in later
chapters) that may have been hypnotized by some prior operator convinced the

CHAPTER IX.
EXPERIMENTS IN INDUCED SENSATION.
In the previous chapter we looked at examples of evidence of Experimental Fascination in the
field of muscle control. In this chapter we will study the phenomenon in relation to the
sensations induced following the same causal laws and are produced in the same manner and
with the same methods used for the phenomena muscle.
We will begin our considerations relating to the control of the senses, with the proof of the wellknown "hand that burns."
Evidence of hand burns.
This test is conducted as follows: Do you give yourselves before all '' emotional 'that extends to
you the hand, palm facing down. Place the first two fingers of his right hand on the back of the
hand of the subject, tenendovele for a moment and focusing your eyes and your will on his hand.

accompanied by strong and vivid suggestions. A similar experiment in this is to give all ''
emotional 'a silver coin, telling him to keep it between forefinger and thumb. After a little 'give

Induced pain.

I saw the experiment above, in a room full of people, and many among the spectators, also tried
the pain induced in '' emotional '. Do not forget what I said in the previous chapter with respect to
remove the conditions created after the experiment. In such cases rub your finger on the

supposed burned (?) Or injured (?) Saying, "All right now, okay, the pain has ceased." If you did
not like the '' emotional 'could leave with the feeling that his hand had actually suffered the
burning or pain.
Remarkable phenomena.
In this connection, it might be useful to draw your attention to the fact that the works that deal
with this subject, talking about cases in which they were actually produced burns on the body of

Many other experiments could be cited in the control of the senses, but they are not that different
forms of the same thing. The ability of the experimenter will indicate a number of variants, if
found suitable for the subject.
Sense of smell induced.
The sense of smell may be induced by the investigator, suggesting all '' emotional 'that a given
bottle containing a liquid by the smell of a certain perfume, etc. This test can vary by changing
the suggestion, so that all of the most popular smells can be perceived as a legend bottle] magical
scent of the sorcerer, which probably was nothing more than a case of a clever sense of induction

Personal experiences.
I personally had the experience of similar cases, in which several people have been exposed in
this way. Once I attended a performance in which one of the characters said, "Oh! feel the smell
of magnolias, as is their strong smell in hot tonight! . And suddenly the whole audience had the
feeling of a distinct smell of magnolia shed for the theater. This impression was so strong, that
many asserted that the stage manager had actually introduced that scent to enhance the effect of
the representation; but, taking information, it was learned that this assumption was wrong,
because no perfume had been used.
More recently I attended a recitation: "The girl with the green eyes," in which one of the
characters was to appear to commit suicide by opening the gas valve in the presence of the whole
audience. The room was large and the actress opened, one after another, all the spouts gas of the
numerous candlesticks, of the arms of light, etc. Suddenly the audience began to sniff and say,
"Feel the smell of gas," until all were persuaded to perceive it and some women fainted. Of
course the original impression was physical from the suggestion, but as soon as the public
perceived it, it will spread like a contagion, for law-inducing mental, until all of them were more
or less affected.

The experiments of the professor.

Cases have been reported in which the effect is produced specially. For example, he tells of an
old German professor on, which, after having announced to the student body that would open a
bottle containing a chemical compound known for its foul smell, instead uncorked a bottle of
distilled water completely odorless. The class immediately sensed the supposed smell and, one
after another, all the files of the students showed their disgust. Exhalations of steam supposed
were spreading around the room, just as if it were liquid genuine; those closest to the chair
perceived it before and besides those in the second row, and so on, until all the room it was
invaded. Even when the professor had explained the nature of the experiment, the students
continued to show signs of disgust and many refused to believe the explanation, so strong was
the impression received. These cases are but examples of induced sensation of smell, in the field
of Mental Impressions.
Vista induced.
The sense of sight can be induced in the same manner. Here is a common experiment done on an
individual's very emotional: order him to stretch out his hand with the palm down time, then, on
the back of it draw a cross with your index finger, pressing firmly on the skin and saying, "You

And the inhibition of pain, made by one individual to another, is simply the use of that power by
induction and suggestion. This is not to create a power in an individual, but only to awaken what
already exists in him.
How to inhibit pain in others.
The following method is simple but very effective, is used in the best psychological laboratories.
L '' emotional 'is comfortably sitting or lying in front of the experimenter. Suppose that you want

Reconciliation of opposing views.

I have dealt quite thoroughly the mental state of the subject hypnotic genuine,
because the claims of two schools of investigators in the field, are diametrically
opposed. The old school of hypnotists mesmerizzatori and insists that people have

many of these people will tell you that they were fully unconscious of what they

contribute to the interest and action of the show. My description of the mental state
of the subject, refers only to genuine cases day hyper-impressionability in the state
of "dream in a waking state."
The show hypnotic.
I do not want you to waste time listening to, or unnecessarily occupy space to
describe many characteristic features of the representations hypnotic public; such
as the scene of the barber's shop, a trip in a balloon, the game of "base-ball", the
hive of bees, the school session and several thousand other representations, given
the many actors hypnotics, some of which are true artists in their field and show
wonderful skill in making their representations "interesting" and very similar to a
variety show. Almost all who read these lines, have attended a performance of this
kind and will understand what I mean. The principle is the same in all these
representations. The "cronies" and "the for-emotional" and accept the suggestions,
they are also impressed by the imagination Positive hypnotist, acting on their
Imagination Negative by current Mental induction. But the most surprising and
complicated experiments are simply combinations of experiments "Induced

CHAPTER XII.
THE DANGER of the psyche.
In the previous chapter I dealt with the subject of the rationality of Mesmerism, to show that the
phenomenon of Mesmerism and hypnotism does not depend on "conditions of sleep", but can be

which the phenomenon is usually associated. I showed, not only the general principles
underlying it, but I have also indicated in detail the technique and the methods by which, any
investigator can produce the same phenomenon. These methods are used continuously in the
main psychological experimental laboratories, in this as in other countries and the results you
mentioned can be played by anyone who wants to put into action the principles listed.
The reason we have been given the information.
I want to establish that the main purpose for which I have given the above information, that was
not necessarily induce the readers of this book to undertake a series of psychological
experiments, but especially to enable them to understand the power and strength of principle
Mental known under the name of "Mental Fascination" and see its practical operations in all its
various stages. I want them to know that the experiments of the psychological laboratories, the

Some phases mentioned above.

stretch in detail this class of phenomena. I refer to the so-called "higher tier" of the phenomenon
mesmeric or hypnotic; the various forms of the condition of trans.
The abnormal conditions.
The phenomena of "trans" products, both by processes mesmeric or by other means, are mental
phases abnormal, unhealthy and not desirable.
I can only strongly disapprove the incoragliamento and the instructions that are given to the
development (which I would call evil), these abnormal states, is "self-induced or by practical
means hypnotic or mesmeric. It is time that someone calls the attention of the public about the

The antiquity of these practices.
Nearly all races found that there are possible means to produce in themselves abnormal

Western illusions.

These conditions can be produced by methods hypnotics, simply because any mental state can be

"The illusion of sleep."

which I have described as the phase of the "game of the bear." Even this is not true sleep, but a
condition similar to dream in a waking state. It is in this stage that produces the greatest part of
the hypnotic phenomena. Sometimes these 'dreams into the waking state "become very deep and
the status of' trans' is almost reached. But though it is not the "sleep" in the proper sense of the
word.
The deplorable trans hypnotic.
They come after the order, the different stages of conditions designated by hypnotists as "deep
sleep", but I say that positively nothing more than the well-known conditions of "trans", in which
people of all nations and of all times, they are immersed by the methods mentioned above. The
only difference is that the operator causes the conditions and means of Influence Mental
Suggestion, precisely as would induce any other state of mind and is not the subject to induce
them in himself. And the same old practice, abnormal and harmful under a different guise. And
what says yes against self-induced conditions, you can also say against those from the operator.
This is the same thing!
