PREFACE
This manual provides brief but relevant information on the background and safety instructions that act
as guidelines for students to carry out the experiments properly. Each experiment will be carried out
in the groups assigned. Students must perform the experiment with care, and record the relevant data,
calculations and findings, into the lab handout, which will be submitted at the end of the respective
lab session.
Read this manual thoroughly prior to attending any lab session. Upon entering the lab, students are
expected to fully observe the laboratory Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) regulations.
Literature on the HSE regulations is given in the following pages. Students will also be briefed by
the lab demonstrator on the HSE aspects at the beginning of the coursework.
For each experiment, the respective lab document will be made available on eLearning for reference.
The lab handout will be provided during lab.

Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of the laboratory component of this course, students should be able to:
conduct experiments, obtain experimental data, analyze the results obtained,
integrate solid mechanics theory into practical applications.

Assessment:
The lab component contributes 8% to the total coursework.

Note:
Students will be divided into pre-assigned groups of 4 or 5 students. Each group will consist of the
same members for the rest of the semester. The experiments and group schedule for each session are
pre-assigned, thus each group is responsible to check this schedule and make preparations
accordingly. The laboratory sessions for the second week will consist of briefings related to the lab.
Lab experiments will start in the third week of the semester.

completion of experiment will get a zero)
10 marks per day late (applies to all group members)
10 marks penalty for the offending student

How To Do Well:
Attend and be punctual for the lab sessions.
Prepare in advance by reading the lab manual and bring the textbook as reference.
As you read, ask yourself questions, and try to determine the answers on your own.
Pay close attention to any briefings or instructions given by the demonstrator or lab staff.
Do all the required lab work carefully and efficiently, and record all notes and data precisely.
Prepare lab reports neatly and promptly, and submit on time.

Ground Rules:
Complete the pre-lab worksheet and attendance form at the beginning of lab. Submit this form
within the first 10 minutes of your assigned lab schedule.
Students who are absent without a valid MC will be scored a zero for the respective lab report.
No "make-up" labs will be allowed for whatever reason.
Tardiness or lack of discipline during lab will be penalized.
Lab reports are due at the end of the lab session. Late reports will be penalized.
Observe all the HSE guidelines, in addition to other instructions from the lab staff or demonstrator.

HEALTH, SAFETY, AND ENVIRONMENT REGULATIONS IN

THE SOLID MECHANICS LABORATORY

1. Introduction
The Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994 cover all persons at work except the arm forces, and
workers aboard ships who are covered by different acts. The OSH Act 1994 puts the primary
responsibility of safety and health on employers and employees.
WHY? WHAT FOR? FOR WHOM?
To ensure the safety and health of individuals who may be exposed to risks arising from work
activities.
HOW?
Through effective safety management systems suited to the nature of work activity at the workplace.
This regulation is intended to draw the guidelines for students with regard to the health, safety, and
environment in the Solid Mechanics Laboratory. It is expected that students will fully observe the
guidelines as a measure to prevent the risk of injuries, health hazards, and damage to the properties in
the laboratory.

2. Major Potential Health Hazards in the Solid Mechanics Laboratory

The Solid Mechanics Laboratory shares common hazards as in other laboratories. Listed below are
the major potential hazards:

injury through misuse of equipment,

injury from electrical shocks,
injury from rotating components,
injury from heavy components,
injury from sharp objects or edges.

3. General Instructions
NEVER MISUSE ANY EQUIPMENT.
Equipment must be used in the manner stated in the Instruction Manuals, and/or with the
laboratory staffs' instructions. It is irresponsible and dangerous to misuse any equipment, or to
ignore instructions and warnings.
DO NOT EXCEED SPECIFIED MAXIMUM OPERATING CONDITIONS.
Operating equipment exceeding the specified operating range could be dangerous and may cause
damage.
TAKE EXTREME PRECAUTION WHEN OPERATING ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENTS.
Electricity is the most common cause of accident in the laboratory. Ensure hands, equipment, and
workplaces are dry prior to switching on the equipment. Always disconnect the power supply
after use.
KNOW THE FIRE EXIT AND LOCATION OF SAFETY EQUIPMENTS.
v

ALWAYS KEEP THE WORKPLACE TIDY.

Arranging the apparatus, equipment, and consumables in proper order would help in ensuring
safety.
AVOID OVERCROWDING AT ONE SPOT.
REPORT ANY ACCIDENT, DAMAGE, OR NEAR MISS, TO THE LABORATORY STAFF.

4. Special Instructions
Wear suitable clothes (a lab coat is required).
Wear protective glasses or gloves when required.
Wear shoes, open-toed sandals and slippers are not permitted.
Don't bring food or beverages into the laboratory.
Smoking is strictly prohibited in the laboratory.
Playful or prankish behavior will not be tolerated in the laboratory.
The use of any personal audio or video equipment is not allowed.

vi

AGREEMENT
We, named as below, fully understand all the regulations pertaining to the Health, Safety, and
Environment in the Solid Mechanics Laboratory as listed in this manual, and therefore shall abide and
