Dale Carnegie Brief

As you instructed, this Dale Carnegie Brief examines two techniques as described in How
to Win Friends and Influence People. Please consider these techniques you have
requested and their examples in application to your class.

Smile
While some people mistakenly assume that quality impressions stem from prosperity and
affluence, the correct way to make a lasting impression is derived from a genuine smile.
However, it is crucial to adhere to the term, genuine in order to effectively apply this
principle in your life.

Applying a genuine smile:

The correct and effective way to apply this principle is to show the people you are
communicating with that you like them, enjoy their presence, and are glad to see them.
This makes the person feel important and therefore is more inclined to take you seriously
and show interest in your presence as well. It is crucial to differentiate yourself from the
negativity that surrounds our world and show a fresh, positive attribute.
There are many examples that show the extent to this principle and how it is successful in
creating powerful impressions when used correctly.

Dogs
Professional atmospheres

Dogs hold the top spot in explaining this technique due to their utmost success with
people. By constantly showing their sincere happiness to see people, they are greeted
with reciprocated enjoyment and interest. Professional atmospheres are also a great
example of how the use of this method matters in terms of success. Clients will remember
a sincere smile of a receptionist or employee that will associate their experience with that
establishment as a positive one, therefore pressing them to return.

Show respect for the other persons opinion

While it is perfectly normal to be wrong, it is more than unpleasant to have someone
acknowledge your error. For someone to share their views and inner thoughts is an
intimate act that should never be neglected. How can you neglect someones views?

Simply tell them they are wrong. Not only will this act not accomplish the main goal of
agreeing upon a correct answer, but will also gain you enemies in the process.

Eliminating, Youre wrong:

The proper way to apply this principle is simply to refrain from using the term, Youre
wrong. Not only does this phrase humiliate ones intelligence but it also demolishes
their self-esteem as well. However, it is almost certain that you will disagree with
someone in multiple circumstances in your life. Rather than insulting someones pride, it
is more beneficial to ask questions instead of rejecting them outright.
There are many examples that show the extent to this principle and how it is successful in
maintaining strong relationships when used correctly.

Personal relationships
Co-Workers

Personal relationships are a great example on how this technique can be used to simply
eliminate unnecessary arguments. Everyone has been in a situation rather it be with a
parent, sibling or significant other where an argument has been started after the phrase,
youre wrong. Think about how many arguments could have been avoided if you
simply asked questions that make them re-think their point rather than insulting their
intelligence. Saving a relationship using this technique with co-workers can be even more
crucial to your success in the workplace. Just one instance can strain a relationship and
make the workplace an uncomfortable place to be in, especially when your co-workers
think of you as inconsiderate and selfish.
