Unit 1

Vocabulary

Unit 1

The hotel game

Use this activity after Lesson 1.1, Ex. 9 on page 9.

New language: Im sorry, were full.
Procedure
Preteach the new language.
Sts work in groups of three. Give each group a copy of
the board, a set of room number cards, a die and three
counters. Sts decide which of them is visiting Canada,
France and Australia.
Sts toss a coin to see who starts. They take it in turns
to move across their section of the board booking
into hotels on the way. Use these scores for the die, so
that the game takes some time to nish: 1 & 2 = move
up one square; 3 & 4 = move up two squares; 5 & 6 =
move up three squares. Shufe the room cards and put
them in a pile face downwards.
Using their own identities, sts must try to check into
the hotels by introducing themselves to the student on
their right: Good morning, Im . The student on their
right picks up a room card. If there is a number on the
card, a room is available and they welcome the person:
Good morning, Mr/Mrs/Ms Schmidt. Welcome to Hotel
Perth. You are in room 265. If the hotel is full (a card
with a bed crossed out), the student says: Im sorry,
Mr/Mrs/Ms Schmidt. Were full. If the hotel is full, the
student trying to check in must go back to the start
square.
The first person to reach the end of the board wins.

Cities and countries

Use this activity after Lesson 1.2 on page 11.

New language: Moscow

Communication
Nice to meet you.

Use this activity after Lesson 1.3 on page 13.

Procedure
Task 1
Use the core cards for real beginners and the core plus
the extension cards for false beginners.
Divide sts into groups of three. Give each group a
set of cards. Ask sts to put them in order to make a
dialogue. If you want to make it competitive, set a time
limit. The first group to order the dialogue correctly
wins. Afterwards, sts act out the dialogue.
Answers
Core dialogue
Jaime: Hi, Natalia.
Natalia: Hi, Jaime. This is Birgit.
Jaime: Nice to meet you, Birgit.
Birgit: Nice to meet you, too.
Jaime: Where are you from, Birgit?
Birgit: Im from Sweden.
Natalia: Where are you from in Sweden?
Birgit: Im from Gothenburg. Where are you from?
Jaime: Im from Spain.
Birgit: Where are you from in Spain?
Jaime: Im from Vigo.
Extension
Birgit: Is Vigo in the south of Spain?
Jaime: No, its in Galicia. Where exactly is Gothenburg?
Birgit: Its in the south west of Sweden. Its on the
coast.
Jaime: Oh! Vigos on the coast, too!

Procedure

Birgit : Lets have a drink, Jaime.

Preteach the new language.

Jaime: Great idea!

Sts work in groups of three. Give each group a set of

cards which are spread out face down. Ask sts to take
turns choosing two cards and showing the cards to
the group. The student showing the cards makes a
sentence using the cards, for example Warsaw is in
Italy. If the statement is true, the other sts say Yes and
the student keeps the two cards. If it isnt true, the
other sts say No and the student puts them back in
the same place they were picked up from. If they are
not sure who is right, they should call on you to be the
final arbiter. After all of the cards have been picked up,
the student who has the most pairs is the winner.

Task 2
Sts work in groups of eight. Give each student a
different identity card. Explain that they are in a
cocktail party and ask them to walk round the class
introducing themselves to different people and finding
out where they are from. With real beginners, you
could elicit a simple example dialogue for two people
and write it on the board, for example:
A: Hi, Im .
B: Hi .
A: Nice to meet you.
B: Nice to meet you, too.
A: Where are you from?
B: Im from .
