theothersandtoldthemhowdogsarebadbecauseanotherdoghadbittenhisgrandfather
yearsago.Ashenodded,asecondboypickedupanotherstoneevenashespokeoftheincessant
barkingofstraydogsinhisneighbourhoodatnight,disturbingthesleepofhisfamily.Athird

Gettinga63houraweekschedule(7daysx9hours)isablessingandmostoftheyoungguns
whojoininfreshafterpostgraduationknowfullywellthata100houraweekscheduleisparfor

havefacedsomeformofviolenceatthepatient'shandsinIndia.

hometomanydoctors.Handingdownverdictsofimprisonmentto3doctorsforthelossofvision
of66patientsfollowinganeyesurgerycamp,thejudicialsystemshowedanamazinglackof
comprehensionaboutwhatwasgoingon.Itdoesnotneedarocketscientisttorealizethata
singletraineddoctorcannotmakethesamemistake66timesin66differenteyesonthesame
day.Theobviousanswertosuchincidenceofmassendophthalmitisisintheuseofunsterile

thetaintedmedicineswhichweremadeinrodentinfestedfactories.Sotellme,whatwasthe
nameofthepharmaceuticalcompanyandwhatactionhasbeentakenagainstitsincethen?You

Itraisedtheobviousquestiontomanydoctorsthough.Whywouldwedosuchaserviceat
allwhenwearebeingcheated?BydoingasingleprivatepatientforRs60,000(whichisstill
cheaperthantheDhs15,000/chargedabroad),thedoctorcanchoosetousethebestdrugsfrom
reliablecompaniesinsteadofthegenericsubstandardonesandmakeahundredtimesmore
moneydoingonecasewhilebeingtotallyethical.Canyoucallthemcheatsthen?No.Exceptthat
bydoingso,weallknowasdoctorsthatnobodywouldthencareforthetreatmentofthepoor,if
wegiveuponthemtoo.

askedtodoworkwellbeyondhisphysicalandmentalcapacity.

7. Genericpharmaceuticalcompanieswillpawnofftheirgoodsmadeinunsterileconditions

8. Whenthingsgobad,thecrowdwillcalmlyignorethegovernmentandpharmacythat
cutcornersforaprofitandbeatthedoctor'sdoorstepwithstakesandpitchforks.And

cuttingofforgansfortheirownprofits.

familyandpeersforovertwodecadesbeforeweearnedtherighttowearthatstethoscope.And

Soyes,therearegoingtobedoctorsworkingbesideyouwhowillpromoteamedicine
notnecessarilybecauseitisgoodbutbecausethepharmaceuticalrepgiveshima
goodincentive.Andyouwillseethatdoctortakinghomemorethanyoudofordoing
thesameworkasyouandthedevilonyourshoulderwillsmile.Hewillpositively

Youwillfinddoctorswhoareforcedtodotheextraprocedurebecause,workingina
privatehospital,theyneedtoanswertotheheadsabove.Theyneedtomakeaprofit
fortheirbosseswhoshrugastheyremindyouthatifthehospitalrunsintolossesand
shutsdown,theloseristhepatienthimself.Andwhenyouthinkaboutit,theyare
right,aretheynot?Privatehospitals(whichstillcatertoahugepercentageofthe
population)needtomakeaprofittocontinue.Iftheyshutdown,thehealthcareof

thecountrywouldcollapseinmonthssimplybecausegovernmenthospitalswould
neverbeabletomanagethevolume.Again,thearrowofyourmoralcompasswill
trembleasyougrapplebetweentheinnerdesiretotreatpeopleinpainandthe
requirementofforcingthemawaytoalesssafercenterbecausethey(likeyou!)
cannotaffordthishospital.
KnowthatyouarenotGod.'FeelinglikeaGod'whenyouseeapatientopenhiseyes
afterasuccessfulsurgeryisdifferentfrombelievingyouareaGod.Itonlyneedone
mishapforsuchGodstofall...andfallhard.
Professionalcompetitionexiststoo,asthoughyoudidn'thaveenoughonyourplate.
Beingcompetitiveprobablyexistsineveryfieldbutherethegameisplayedwith

lendahelpinghand.Thiswasthestandoftheelectedministersintheendwewouldratherour

Youasadoctorarecaughtinthemoralineptitudeofsuchpoliticiansandfilmstarswhonever
attendgovernmenthospitalsthemselvesandyetdecidehowhospitalsmustberun.
ThisiswhateveryyoungdoctorinIndiatodayisstrugglingwiththedisillusionmentofit

Wewanttoheal...wewantthatsatisfactionofbeingabletosavelivesandseeacheerfulsmileon

nottostrengthenitsownhealthcaresystem.Thefearyoufeelasadoctorshouldbebecauseyou
thinkyouhavemissedadifferentialdiagnosiswhenapatientcomestoyou,notthatyouwillbe
beatenupifthepatient'sconditionworsens.
Dependingonwhereyouwork,youwillfacesomepermutationorcombinationoftheaboveills
ofbeingadoctorinIndia.
Anditwilleatyoufromtheinside.Youwillwonderhowtostrikethebalancebetweenbeing
