1.a) Explain the historical development of finite element analysis and discuss the important
applications.
b) Describe different stress and equilibrium conditions for the structure problems.

2.a) Define the stiffness matrix and describe the characteristics of the stiffness matrix.
b) Estimate the stresses – strains and strain energy stored in the axial bar element with the nodal
displacement values 0.2 mm and 0.4 mm of length 20 mm. Take
∈ = 200GPa and area of the bar is 200 mm2. [8+8]

3. Derive the shape functions and stiffness matrix of a two nodded beam element.

4.a) What is the significance and applications of triangular element? Explain.


b) Evaluate the shape functions on the side of the line 2-3, where the y = 25 line intersects a
triangular element with the coordinates 1(10, 10), 2(45, 32) and 3(25, 40).

5. Derive the stiffness matrix for 2D axis symmetric triangular element from the first principles.

6. Estimate the temperature distribution in 1D fin as figure by making the fin in to two elements.

1.a) Derive the strain displacement relations from the first principles.
b) State and explain the minimum potential energy principle and also derive the equilibrium
equation. [8+8]

2. Calculate displacement vector, strains, stresses, strain energy and reaction for the following as
shown in fig.
Take E = 2x105 N/mm2 [16]

3. Estimate the stiffness matrix and the deflection at the centre of the simply supported beam of
length 3m. A 50 KN of load is acting at the centre of the beam.
Take EI = 800 x 103 N-m2 [16]

4.a)` Discuss the importance of isoperimetric conditions in solving the CST problems.
b) Calculate the shape functions at the point of P ( 22, 45 ) of a CST with the coordinates I ( 1, 10
), J ( 45, 15 ) and K ( 30, 60 ). [8+8]

5. What are different symmetric boundary conditions possible in the fields? Explain them with
suitable examples. [16]

6.a) Compare the FE formulations of structural problems with heat transfer problems.
b) Derive the conductivity matrix for solving ID heat conduction problem. [8+8]

7.a) Name any three elements used in stress analysis of 3-dimensional problems.
b) Describe the procedure of obtaining stiffness matrix by properly choosing shape function for

b) Differentiate between plane stress and plane strain problem and also derive the stress strain
problem relation matrix for both the cases. [8+8]

2.a) Derive the stiffness matrix of axial bar element from the first principles.
b) Calculate the model displacement and forces for the stepped bar with the stiffness values are
12 k N/m and 8K/M and a load of 6 KN is subjected at the end of the stepped bar and the
other end of the bar is fixed. [8+8]

3.a) Derive the Hermit shape functions for the 1-D two nodded beam element from first
principles.
b) What are the assumptions used for the analysis of beam element? Explain[8+8]

4.a) Derive the strain – displacement relation for a 2-D triangular element.
b) Estimate the shape functions of a triangular element at the point P(22, 44) of a CST with the
coordinates 1(0,0), 2(46,8) and 3(18,62). All dimensions are in mm.

1.a) Differentiate between plane stress and strain problems with suitable examples and derive the
elasticity matrix for both the conditions.
b) What are the major limitations of finite element method? Explain the conditions to over come
those limitations. [8+8]

2. Calculate displacement vector, strains, stresses, strain energy and reactions for the following
structure? There is wall existing at the other end and the gap between end of the bar and the
wall is 2mm as shown in figure take E = 2 × 105 N / mm 2 .

3. Find the deflection at the point of load and the slopes at the ends for the steel shaft which is
simply supported at the bearings A and B as shown in figure 1. A load of 3000 N is acting at a
distance 150mm from the bearing A. E = 200 Gpa.
