1. Calculate pressure ,density and temperature at an altitude of 4000m in troposphere.


Develop the relationship used. The sea level data is;
P = 101325 N/m2 , T = 150 C , L = 0.0065 K /m. [16]
2. (a) Explain the considerations for acquiring a 4 seater airplane for an academic
institute located in a remote village. Describe the justification for size and
weight category of the airplane in view of lots level and unused land available.
(b) How will you plan the schedule of the next training flight afresh from station
P to station Q, over flying stations A,B and C. Prepare the plans for approval
of the authorities. Name such authorities. [8+8]
3. (a) Categorize airplanes on the basis of ‘missions for which designed’. Provide an
example each with illustrations.
(b) Consider wing of an all wood airplane. Show the details and resistance to
moments experienced by the wing in flight. [8+8]
4. (a) An airplane weighs 4500 N and has a wing loading of 600N m−2 . If its drag
polar is CD =0.010 +0.021 CL 2 , determine its velocity for minimum power in
straight and level flight.
(b) Establish the relationship for power to fly an airplane at a velocity V in straight
and level flight. Hence prove from above that CDi = 3 CD0 , if the drag polar
is given as CD = CD0 +kCL 2 . [8+8]
5. (a) Describe the Ariana Passenger Payload Experiment (APPLE) of which India
was a partner.
(b) Which is the most successful International Space Agency which has launched
many India made satellite. Provide some details of these satellites. [8+8]
6. (a) Describe the functioning of VHF Ground Direction Finding equipment.
(b) Draw the layout of the operating system of elevators in a Fly-By-Wire control
system of an airplane and explain its functioning. [8+8]
7. Explain the necessity and description of heating system to be used in a small,
single-engine airplane. Describe one such system making use of engine exhaust
gases. [8+8]
8. Consider the ‘Fail safe’ and ‘safe life’ of the V-Tail-fuselage junction of an airplane.
Which of the two is of relevance to the component under consideration? Make use
of sketches / diagrams and other illustrations to explain your choice. [8+8]

3. (a) Write a detailed note on HF communications in avionics.
(b) .Explain with sketches, layout of the longitudinal control system of an airplane
and its operation in a Fly-By-Wire control system. [8+8]
4. (a) Prove that the velocities for minimum power and minimum drag in straight
and level flight of airplane can be obtained from the Power vs Velocity plot.
(b) An airplane weighs 5000 N and has a wing loading of 600N m−2 . If its drag

5. Describe aircraft heating systems and the necessity of the same in a small, single-
engine airplane. Explain with line diagrams the use of engine exhaust for heating
the aircraft cabin. [8+8]
6. What is the effect of repeated cycles of up and down deflections in the outboard
regions of the flexible structure of the wing.
Hence describe the effect of fatigue on the safe life of a component with illustrations.

7. (a) Describe the necessity of a Deep Penetration Strike Aircraft for the armed
forces of a country surrounded by hostile international boundaries.
(b) Describe various security measures to ensure that only genuine persons are
allowed entry to International airports. [8+8]
8. (a) Describe the use of delta wing for high speed and high angle of attack opera-
tions of airplanes with sketches.
(b) Show that straight, untapered wings are better suited for low speed airplanes
in general. What are the difficulties at higher speeds? [8+8]

1. (a) Describe with an example that Airworthiness of all individual components


taken together ensures air safety of the airplane.
(b) Describe the airworthiness testing of seals required in an assembly with varying
type of temperatures. Does the change of temperature prove harmful? Suggest
remedies. [8+8]

2. (a) Illustrate the role of radio waves in avionics. Discuss the propagation of radio
waves as well.
(b) Make use of sketches and diagrams to explain the operations and uses of
various control surfaces of an airplane. [8+8]

3. (a) Two wheeled chariots were common in Indian and Greek mythology. Explain
how such vehicle got its motion and stability.
(b) Comment on the requirements of transportation systems for the development
of the quality of life of human beings. Make use of some examples from village
level. [8+8]

4. (a) Define the terms:


i. stalling speed
ii. wing loading
iii. minimum drag condition
iv. minimum power condition. Establish their importance in airplane perfor-
mance calculations / predictions.
(b) Consider the drag polar CD = CD0 + kCL 2 . If the airplane flies straight and
level at a velocity V, Plot the relationship between Power, P and speed, V.
Can you locate the velocity for minimum drag on this curve? [8+8]

5. Define aerodynamic forces acting on a flying object. How is the lift force generated
in such cases? Show with representative sketches and plots these forces acting on
the following:

(a) a circular arc aligned with flow


(b) circular arc at α = 2o
(c) stationary circular cylinder
(d) rotating circular cylinder
(e) symmetrical airfoil at α = 2o

6. (a) Describe the purpose of acquiring 8 to 10 seater aircraft for a state government.
What are the essential features of such airplanes? Elaborate with examples.
(b) Describe the kind of instruments and other facilities provided on the ATC
unit where the airports can handle airplane with a gross take off weight up to
50,000 Kg? [8+8]

7. Show with appropriate sketches details of the construction of an all metal tubular
frame fabric covered fuselage for a light airplane . Explain the sharing of loads by
all members. [16]

8. (a) Describe the space station called SKY LAB. What were the reasons of falling
of “Sky lab” on the earth?
(b) Describe in details a ‘satellite launch vehicle’. Is it necessary for it to have
multistage? Illustrate with data and logic. [8+8]

3. (a) Consider the drag polar CD = CD0 + kCL 2 . bPlot a curve between CD and V.
Comment on the nature of the curve .Explain the attitude of airplane along
this curve.
(b) An airplane weighs 4500 N and has a wing loading of 600 N m−2 . If its drag
polar is CD =0.011 +0.022 CL 2 , determine its velocity for minimum drag in

Describe all the features you prefer to build in to the configuration.
(b) What do you know about the HANSA trainer airplane designed and built in
India by NAL Bangalore? Provide as much details known to you and make

5. Describe requirements of various environment systems deployed in airplanes flying
at low and higher altitudes. Provide brief details of each system. Discuss if there
are alternatives if any. Make use of sketches and line diagrams to explain the

6. (a) Describe the GSLV series of space launch vehicles developed by VSSC/ISRO.
(b) Describe the INSAT series of spacecrafts developed by VSSC/ISRO. [8+8]
