1. Urea pellets are made by spraying drops of molten urea into cold gas at the top of a
tall tower and allowing the material to solidify as it falls. Pellets 6mm in diameter
are to be made in a tower 25m high containing air at 200 C. The density of urea is
1330kg/m3

(a) what would be the terminal velocity of the pellets, assuming free settling
conditions
(b) would the pellets attain 99% of this velocity before they reach the bottom of
the tower. [10+6]

2. Give a diagrammatic representation of a typical pump application. Applying

Bernoulli’s equation find the pump work. Also write the expressions for power
supplied to the pump and power delivered to the fluid. [16]

3. (a) What are the energy losses in pipes. Explain in detail.

(b) Explain adiabatic frictional flow. [8+8]

4. Differentiate between:-

(a) Absolute pressure and Atmospheric pressure

(b) Intensity of pressure and Total pressure
(c) Resultant pressure and Centre of pressure
(d) Positive and Negative gauge pressure. [4+4+4+4]

5. (a) Define the terms sonic, sub-sonic, super sonic flows, mach angle and mach
cone.
(b) A gas is flowing through a horizontal pipe at a temperature of 4o C. The
diameter of the pipe is 8cm and at a section 1-1 in this pipe, the pressure
is 30.3N/cm2 (gauge). The diameter of the pipe changes from 8 cm to 4 cm
at the section 2-2, where pressure is 20.3 N/cm2 (gauge). Find the velocities
of the gas at these sections assuming an isothermal process. Take R= 287.14
Nm/kg K, and atmospheric pressure = 10N/cm2 . [8+8]

6. Explain Venturimeter in detail. Also derive the expression for discharge through a
venturimeter. [16]

from the reboiler of a distillation tower to a second distillation unit without cooling
the toluene before it enters the pump .If the friction loss in the line between the
reboiler and pump is 7KN/m2 and the density of toluene is 866Kg/m3 . how far
above the pump must the liquid level in the reboiler be maintained to give a net
positive suction head of 2.5m? [16]

8. (a) State the Bernoullis equation? Explain the significance of each term.
(b) Write any two applications of the Bernoullis equation.
