Summer Semester, A. Y. 2014-2015

Time: 90 Minutes
Full Marks: 75

There are 4 (four) questions. Answer any 3 (three) questions. All questions carry equal marks.
Marks in the margin indicate full marks. Programmable calculators are not allowed. Do not write on
this question paper.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------1 a) Define power system stability. What problems will arise if a power system is rotor 06
.
angle unstable?

.

b) Differentiate between short term and long term stability of a power system. Is it
necessary to consider the long term stability if only rotor angle stability is of interest?
What is the main difference between voltage stability and rotor angle stability?

c)

What is the simplest model of representing a synchronous machine? Discuss the

underlying assumptions of this model.

a)

What advantages can be attained if the rotor angular position or angular velocity of a
synchronous generator is measured with respect to a synchronously rotating frame
instead of a stationary frame? Explain with neat diagram.

b) A 36-pole machine is rotating at a speed of 120 rad/sec electrical.

i)
What will be the mechanical angular speed of the machine?
ii)
What will be the mechanical angular speed if the number of poles is halved?

Figure 2(c) represents the Pe- curve of a single machine infinite bus power system.
The mechanical power input is Pm and the system has two equilibrium points A and
B. Explain the small disturbance stability of these two equilibrium points.

a) The equation of motion of a synchronous generator connected to infinite bus is given as

. If the system experiences small perturbation, derive the
expression of the synchronizing power coefficient (P s) and show that the system
stability is determined by the sign of this coefficient.

A three-phase, 50 Hz, synchronous generator is connected to an infinite bus through a

transformer and two parallel transmission lines as shown in Figure 4. The input
mechanical power to the synchronous generator is Pm. The real power supplied by the
generator is Pe. Draw the Pe- curve and show the accelerating and decelerating areas
for the following cases:
i) A three phase-to-ground fault at the generator terminal, where system returns to its
pre-fault condition after fault clearing.
ii) A three phase-to-ground fault in the middle of the second transmission line and after
fault the second transmission line is disconnected from the system.
iii) A three phase-to-ground fault in the middle of the second transmission line and
after fault the second transmission line is kept in the system.
