Simple Stress and Strain


Hookes law, linear and lateral stress and strain, modular ratio and Poisson's ratio, stresses in bars of
uniform section, varying section and composite section. Temperature stress and strains. Definitions of
Modulus of Elasticity, Modulus of Rigidity, Bulk modulus and volumetric strain.
Simple examples based on use of formula on above topic.
Principle Stress and Strain
Concept of principle stresses and principle plane, Major and minor principal plane and stress.
Example based on use of formulae for a body subjected to:
a) Normal stresses in one plane only,
b) Normal stresses in two mutually perpendicular directions,
c) Normal stresses in one plane accompanied by simple shear stress,
d) Normal stresses in two mutually perpendicular directions accompanied by shear stress.
Strain Energy
Types of loading, derivation for strain energy in a body due to gradually applied axial load, comparison
of stresses due gradual load, sudden load and impact load.
Thin Shells
Derivation of formula for stresses and strain in thin cylindrical shells and thin spherical shells. Simple
problems on formulae derived.
Moment of Inertia
Concept of moment of Inertia, Theorem of Parallel and Perpendicular axis and their use. Formulae for
Moment of Inertia for rectangular, circular and triangular section. Solution of simple problems based
on regular and composite shapes made up of regular shapes.
Shear Force And Bending Moment
Study of Simply supported, cantilever and overhanging beams.
Shear force and bending moment diagrams for beams subjected to concentrated load, uniformly
distributed load and inclined loads by using analytical method.
Bending Stresses in Beams
Concept of pure bending, assumptions, derivation of bending stress formula, description of various
terms related to bending such as neutral surface, neutral axis, section modulus, modulus of rupture,
flexural rigidity, flexural stiffness. Examples for finding bending stress, allowable load, radius of
curvature and bending stress distribution diagram.
Shearing Stresses in Beams
Derivation of shear stress formula for rectangular, circular and triangular sections. Problems of
calculation of shear stresses at important points and drawing shear stress diagram for rectangular,
triangular and circular section. Sketches of shear stress diagram for T and I sections.
Torsion and Spring
Assumptions, derivation of torsion formula, description of various terms related to torsion such as:
polar modulus, polar moment of inertia, torsional stiffness, Power formula. Problems based on the used
of torsion and power formula for single circular or hollow circular shafts. Derivation for formula and
problems on closely coiled helical spring subjected to axial load only.
Direct and Bending Stress
Concept of direct and bending stress, examples on direct and bending stress in compression member of
rectangular section having eccentric load in the plane bisecting the thickness only.

Practical / Term - work - Practical / term-work will consists minimum ten experiments based on above topics.
