Kootenay Carshare:
This fall marks the 8 year anniversary of the Kaslo

branch of the Kootenay Carshare and we want to share
the top 8 reasons why we love it:
1. It reduces transportation costs: When some members
joined they sold their second vehicle; others let go of their
only vehicle; they cashed in their insurance no more
repairs, maintenance, gas, insurance, tires.
2. Its rates are reasonable: There is a $5 monthly fee, a km
rate and hourly fee according to the size of vehicle. Economy cars are $2.75/hr plus $.20/km; the truck is $4.10/hr
plus $.35/km. The Carshare website provides a Trip Cost
Calculator to do trip cost estimates before you book.

3. Its a co-op: Members purchase a $500 refundable

membership share and become part owners of the business you get the money back when you stop being a
member.
4. Its easy: Kaslo has two small cars (one is pet friendly)
and a 4x4 truck. Members go to an on-line calendar to
make bookings as short as 15 minutes or up to 28 days.
Vehicles are returned (clean and at least half full of gas) to
the same location; keys are located on the vehicle.
5. Its regional: Membership in Kaslo allows you to use
cars in Nelson, Revelstoke, Kimberley, Rossland, Fernie
and Golden. You can also be a roaming member for any
Carshare co-op in BC including Vancouver, Victoria and
Kelowna.
6. Its green-ish: People sharing cars means fewer cars
on the road. Fewer cars on the road means fewer greenhouse gas emissions and less traffic. For every Kootenay
Carshare car on the road, at least 5 private vehicles are
removed. Offering to Rideshare a booking reduces the
costs further.
7. Its safe: All vehicles are regularly maintained, with
good snow tires in the winter.
8. Its good people: Carshare people are always helpful,
and easy to be co-owners with.

HOLLEY RUBINSKY died Saturday, August 1st, 2015, from cancer.

She was born in 1943 in Long Beach, California and attended UCLA where
she met and married film director Carroll Ballard. Winning the Samuel
Goldwyn Creative Writing Award helped launch her career as a fiction
writer and she published in numerous magazines including Redbook and
Cosmopolitan. Holley received her masters degree in teaching and learned
to fly a Piper Cherokee with a scholarship from the Ninety-Nines, the
International Organization for Women Pilots.
Holley and her daughter, Robin Ballard, left California for the picturesque
village of Kaslo, BC, in the West Kootenay, where her mother spent summers,
and Holley taught at the elementary school. At a Banff publishing workshop she
met the writer and software architect, Yuri Rubinsky. He was the love of her life.
They married in 1984, and took up residence in Toronto, Ontario.
Holley won the National Magazine Award, the Foundation Award for Fiction
and the Journey Prize. After Yuris untimely death in 1996, Holley published
the second of her four novels, At First I Hope for Rescue with Vintage Canada.
Holley moved to Arizona and became an avid bird watcher. Towing her camper
through the desert, intrigued by the landscape and its people, her impressions
found their way into her final collection of stories, South of Elfrida.
Holley, a Kaslovian to the core, returned to her historic house in the
Kootenays where she became the host of the radio program The Writers
Show and led writing retreats in Kaslo. Known for her straight talk, she was
an engaged member of her community. She volunteered at the baby clinic,
the local library, she tutored children and supported the arts, most notably
the Langham Cultural Centre in Kaslo.
Holley is survived by her brother Dick Woolf, her daughter Robin Ballard,
her grandsons Jasper and Sebastian Rohner, and her beloved cat, EttaBigEtta.

Canada 150 grant towards work on the trail.
Earl Grey Pass Trail
The Kaslo and District Community Forest Society

sponsored a grant application to Canada 150 (to celebrate
Canadas 150th birthday in 2017) to get funding to help
refurbish the Earl Grey Pass Trail. The grant application
was successful in garnering $40,000 from Canada 150.
This will be matched by partners such as Area D RDCK
($10,000), BC Parks ($10,000) and Columbia Basin Trust
($20,000) to total $80,000. This money will go towards
making the current cable cars easy to use, for work on
the campsites on the trail, and for trail work where and
as necessary.
The Earl Grey Pass is historically significant, dating back to the early 1800s when Kinbasket, a Shuswap
First Nations Chief, led his band over this pass to Invermere. The trail was an important supply and access route
between the East and West Kootenays through the 1800s
into the early 1900s. In 1908, the Fourth Earl Grey, then
Governor-General of Canada, travelled the trail from east
to west and the trail was subsequently named in his honour. (Source, Hiking the West Kootenay, John Carter 1993)
The trail is approximately 61 kilometres long and is usually back-packed over the course of several days. A cabin
was constructed near the start of the east side of the trail

for Earl Greys trip back in 1908. The cabin needs extensive repairs and may be considered as a separate project.
As one nears the trail end on the west side, there is another
cabin the McLaughlin Cabin that dates back to 1906.
It was built to service old mine workings in that area. The
trail has changed dramatically since its early days as natural phenomena influence the route. The trail had significant work undertaken on it in the mid 1960s and it was
officially re-opened in 1967 for Canadas Centennial. Since
then there has been additional work done, but recent
blowdown events and the flushing of Hamill Creek have
caused issues with the trail. It is hoped that this funding
will help bring back the trail to a reasonable level for hiking. The Earl Grey Trail Restoration Committee members
are Carolyn Schramm, John Cathro, Chris Webster, Kaslo
and District Community Forest, Rob MacDonald, Hugh
Ackroyd and Tom Roos, BC Parks, Bill Bryce, Friends of
West Kootenay Parks and Joe Johnston.

Woodland animals may look harmless, but they can

cause serious damage to your home and yard. Theyre
capable of physical confrontation, spreading disease, causing odours, creating noise disturbances, destroying landscaping and vegetable gardens, and even chewing through
wires. While these pests are typically thought of as a rural
issue, experts note that our cohabitation with nature will
always bring pest issues.
Even the most urban settings can experience wildlife
and its associated issues ranging from simple annoyances or bold attacks to serious health risks, says Alice
Sinia, PhD, resident entomologist with Orkin Canada.
These pests can be particularly difficult to treat reactively
so taking preventative measures is the best solution when
dealing with wildlife.
Experts at Orkin recommend these tips to protect your
yard from the wild this fall:
W Waste containers and trashcans should be made of
tough material like hard plastic or metal and should have
tight-fitting lids. Make sure they are securely supported so
nocturnal food raiders cant tip them over.
I Inspect and monitor for accumulations of moisture
on the roof, around air conditioners and in other favourable nesting locations. Birds and wildlife, like all pests, are
constantly in search of water sources and most only need
minimal amounts to survive.
L Lawns should be clear of tall grasses and brush.
Maintain landscaping by treating for grubs, or beetle larvae, as they can be a food source for raccoons and other
wildlife. Keep trees and vegetation trimmed at least half a
metre away from your home to limit pest access.
D Discourage infestations through quick action.
While some wildlife, like raccoons, are stealthy, others,
like birds, are not. Infestations usually become evident
with the increase of adult birds, the frequent occurrence of
chirping, the sighting of nests, and an increased quantity
of droppings in the area. If you suspect a problem, contact
your local pest control provider immediately.
The great outdoors provides a breath of fresh air, and

Have you heard that a Meadow Creek bachelor pioneer,

Charlie Campbell, became so depressed that he shot himself? This is a true story. He was a friend of the Alexander
family of Cooper Creek, and lived on the edge of the meadows where Mount Lavina greeted him across waving sedges
under morning sun. Charlies suicide note was a simple
request: that he be buried under the lone apple tree next to
his cabin. The apple tree still stands; but Charlies request
was denied. Although Charlie left money with his suicide
note to cover expenses, he sadly ended up in the Kaslo Cemetery. Elsewhere would have been against the law of the day.
This is but one of a treasure trove of tales once told by
North Kootenay Lake pioneer Ernie Alexander before
he passed away in 2001 stories that were published as
Lardeau-Duncan Memories. Thanks to the Lardeau Valley Historical Society, and the generosity of Ernies son
Ken Alexander, the book is available again in a muchimproved edition.
Art Carson, Elizabeth Scarlett and I spent many hours
researching the spellings of place names and people
names, says Peter Jonker, who spearheaded the project.
We took great care to avoid compromising Ernies original voice, so we didnt touch grammar issues; none of
that. However, we did clarify photos, improve the maps,
and develop a very comprehensive index to support historical research. The book is available at the SS Moyie,
the Meadow Creek Museum, and the Meadow Creek and
Cooper Creek stores.

& Navah
Patches, an eight-year-old male, and Navah, a nine-year-old female, are a sweet

bonded pair of white shih tzu/bichon frise cross dogs. They came to us at the BC
SPCA Nelson branch after their owner unfortunately passed away.
Patches is a very laid back, mellow guy who loves to lie on your lap and be
petted, however he still gets quite excited once its time to go for a walk.
Navah is a sweetheart who loves affection and a good pet. She is a little
overweight and would certainly benet from daily exercise and a healthy diet.
Both dogs are quite playful and excitable for their age and just love interacting
with their caregivers. Despite their breed, they are denitely not yappy dogs.
They are both fairly quiet and enjoy spending most of the day lounging around
together.

LISTEN TO YOUR BODY

As a community dietitian, I am often asked
about the latest trends and diets. I think to get
right to the heart of the subject, lets put the
Google search away, get back to the basics
and listen to our bodies. If you could ask your
body what it needs to feel good and enjoy
life I think this is what it would tell you.
Eat regularly. Whether you are working,
hiking or travelling, your body needs fuel
(food) every three to four hours to support
what you are doing. Without regular fuel the
bodys metabolism slows down and becomes
sluggish and this can result in weight gain.
Too little food can cause weight gain and so
can consuming only one or two bigger meals
a day. Spreading your food intake throughout
the day and eating balanced meals of three
to four of the food groups will let your body
perform its best.
Dont cut out the good carbohydrates.
Do you ever feel your energy levels dropping
in the afternoon or during an activity? It might
be due to a lack of carbohydrates (often called
carbs) to balance your meal. Carbohydrates
come from the bread and cereals food group.

Keep sugary drinks and treats in check.
These choices have the sole purpose of pure
pleasure. But too much fun, too often can
add up faster than you think. A small French
vanilla cappuccino can pack 10 teaspoons
of sugar and two teaspoons of fat; a 591
ml bottle of pop has 17 teaspoons of sugar.
Its okay to enjoy the odd sweet treat but be
sure to check in with yourself and ask how
often and what else do I enjoy that might
be better for me. Cool smoothies with fresh
berries, fruit, and yogurt with 100% juice are
a delicious and healthier choice.
Get a move on. Your body loves to move
whenever it gets a chance. Try planning
activities based on seasons to provide a
variety of fun activities that can keep you
moving throughout the year. Activity has
added benets that we may not often think
about like taking the time to clear our minds,
notice our surroundings, connect with friends
and family and challenging ourselves by
trying something new.
Enjoy real fresh food. Nothing beats
home cooked, real, locally grown food. This
is the perfect time of year to enjoy fresh
picked colourful produce and herbs from your
garden or local food markets.

I think it would say dont worry so much
about the trends and the fads feed me
regularly with good, fresh, tasty food and be
sure to keep me moving and by the way

CAULIFLOWER IS CATCHING ON!

I love this time of year! With summer the
selection of fresh produce at the farmers
market is increasing each week. I truly look
forward to Saturday mornings; strolling the
farmers market with my husband and son,
coming home with an arm load of goodies
that were freshly pulled from the earth. It was
a recent trip to the farmers market that inspired me to dedicate an article to cauliower.
Despite its bland colour, cauliower does
not disappoint when it comes to nutrition!
It is a great source of vitamin C, which has
an important role in our immune system.
It is also a good source of folate, a vitamin
that is essential for making new cells and
is necessary before and during pregnancy.
As well, it is a good source of bre and
Pennywise
antioxidants and is low in fat and calories.

It is also extremely versatile and has
become popular in many dishes. I have seen
cauliower as the star ingredient in all kinds
of recipes, even hummus and pizza crust. My
favourite way to eat it is oven roasted along
with other veggies such as potatoes, yams,
carrots and/or onions. Toss the veggies in olive
oil and sprinkle with your choice of seasoning
(I like curry powder, fresh garlic and a sprinkle
of sea salt.) Roasted cauliower can also be
served on its own as a side dish, added to
pasta dishes, or pureed into soups.
Looking to lighten things up? Try cauliower
as a substitute for potatoes. Cauliower puree
makes a surprisingly good, lower calorie
alternative to mashed potatoes. Or replace
potatoes with steamed cauliower in your favourite potato salad recipe.

a new spin on an
old favourite? Try
this cauliower
puree that some
call mock mashed
potatoes.
1 head of cauliower
1 tablespoon of light cream cheese
cup of Parmesan or aged cheddar cheese
1 tablespoon of butter
A sprinkle of both salt and pepper
2-4 tablespoons of fresh chives for garnish
Wash cauliower then chop and steam
until well cooked and soft, about 10 minutes.
If necessary, pat dry to remove any extra
moisture. In a bowl with a hand blender or
in a food processor puree the hot cauliower
with the other ingredients (except the chives).
Serve as a side dish and garnish with chives.
Optional if you like the avour add a clove
of fresh or roasted garlic to this recipe.
