SELECTION GUIDE
HYDROCARBON SEPARATORS
The choice of a hydrocarbon separator depends on various parameters:

Discharge class
Chosen material
Building place
Application

1. DISCHARGE CLASS
The discharge class depends on the outlet type. (Environment in which the pre-treated effluents are
discharged) The standards in force recommend two discharge classes:
-

Class I : Hydrocarbon residual content at the outlet of the separator lower than 5mg/l
Class II : Hydrocarbon residual content at the outlet of the separator lower than 100mg/l

These standards do not advise the outlet associated with these two discharge classes.
All the profession generally advises:

Class I: (5mg/l) when the cleared sewage water is carried away directly into natural
environment or in the pluvial water network.

Class II: (100mg/l) when the cleared sewage water is turned towards sewage plant.

2. THE MATERIALS
FRANCEAUXs hydrocarbon separators can be manufactured in steel, polyethylene or stainless steel.
Steel: Most cases
Best quality/price rate
Polyethylene: Easy to install (lightness)
Stainless steel: 10 years guarantee
Essential for some applications such as: Battery premises, chemistry room

3. BUILDING PLACE
The place where the hydrocarbon separator is installed has a high importance.
It enables to determine:

The extension shafts

The working load of the plugs

The extension shaft is a component that raises the access to the material up to the finished ground. It
enables in some cases to put the separator with freeze protection.
The extension shafts of the Franceaux separators with a total accessibility are adjustable and enable to
refine the outlet water wire thanks to adjusting screws.
The covers working load is determined according to the building place of the separator. (See Standard
NF EN 124)

If the separator is settled out of a traffic area, the resistance of the cast iron plug will be 125 kN.
If the separator is settled under an accidental traffic area, the resistance of the cast iron plug will be 250
kN.
If the separator is positioned under a roadway with a heavy and intensive traffic, the separator will have
to be equipped with a 400 kN plug.
In this case, the separator will be manufactured with access shafts. The company will make a loaddistribution slab and will provide concrete shafts and 400 kN cast iron plugs.

4. APPLICATION AREAS
A hydrocarbon separator can be used in various applications. This practical guide is aiming to help you
to choose the separator you need according to the constraints related to your building site. You will find
below a non-exhaustive list of the most frequent applications with the apparatuses types corresponding
to your need.

A. COVERED PARKING AREAS

The quantity of mud in covered parking areas is generally not very important. We will choose a
separator with or without a sludge trap. The FRANCEAUXs NF HYDROMAC model (with sludge trap)
answers these constraints perfectly. It offers an economical but very efficient solution because it
combines a sludge trap and a separator compartment in a single steel installation. For the difficult
places to reach, FRANCEAUX has designed the POLYBAC, a hydrocarbon separator with sludge trap
in polyethylene.
The model will be chosen according to the following chart:

Class I (5mg/l)

The HYDROMAC and POLYBAC apparatuses are available in 100 mg/l version (Class II) and 5mg/l
version (Class I). The steel models are available with total accessibility or partial accessibility.
It should be noted that regulations impose roof outlets (rather than gullies) in covered parking areas to
bring the sewage water towards the separator. FRANCEAUX can also answer to these needs with its
wide range of drainage products.

B. FUEL DISTRIBUTION AREAS

This type of surface present risks of massive oil spillage. The hydrocarbon separators equipped with a
storm overflow weir (bypass) must not be installed on these sensible areas.
According to the 76-663 decree (261 bis) from the 19 July 1976, and the 7 January 2003 decree,
discharges coming from fuel distribution or filling areas must have a hydrocarbon concentration lower
than 20mg/l. The chosen separator will mandatory fulfil conditions of class I. This decree imposes a

minimum discharge/hour/m2 of 45 litres for the considered area. A 0,5 ratio can be allocated to surfaces
protected by a canopy. The ideal model for this type of application is the NF HYDROMAC K.

C. CAR WASHES
The choice of a separator for a car wash is done according several criteria.
- The flow rate to be treated
- Quantity of mud
The calculation of the flow rate will enable to choose the separators size.
It is calculated considering the following elements:
High pressure hose
Automatic washing (rollers)
Hand washing DN 15/21 mm
DN 20/27 mm
DN 26/34 mm

2 l/s per unit and 1 l/s per additional unit

2 l/s per unit
0,5 l/s per unit
1 l/s per unit
1,7 l/s per unit

If a surface-active detergent is used with the washing water, the separators size will be equal to the
total flow rate allocated with a correction coefficient of X2.
The quantity of mud determines the volume of the sludge trap built-in the separator. The chosen model
will be different according to the quantity of mud. The following chart will help you to make a rapid
choice according to your application.

Please note that within the framework of a mechanical parts washing area, one should check
that used oils are not miscible with water. Machining and cutting oils cannot be separated by
this type of pre-treatment.

D. NON COVERED SURFACES

The choice of the nominal size depends on the surface to be treated and on the storm part that has to
be pre-treated.
If the treated surface includes a fuel distribution area, this fuel distribution area will mandatory be
protected by its own separator.
The following chart will help you to choose your separator according to the geographic place of you
building site. The method adopted to value the peak flow resulting from the run-off waters collection,
come from the standard NF EN 752-4- chapter 11.3.2. This standard applies up to 10000 m. Beyond,
one should use the Caquet Method.
To know the rainfall area in which your building site is located, please refer to the map below.

Plan extension shafts if necessary. In this

case, make a seal (type SYKA) between
the case and the extension shaft.

According NF P16-442 standard (installation and maintenance of the separators for light liquids):
Execute the excavation: It must be planed down at 0,1m (0,1 in case of hard and rocky ground) under the separators floor.
Check the conditions of the separators coating before burying it.
Cover the bottom of the excavation with compacted sand layer with a minimum 0,10m to 0,15m thickness, perfectly levelled.
It is made up with materials having less than 5% of particle lower than 0,1mm and do not contain materials upper than
30mm.In case of aquiferous ground, the size of the materials is comprised between 5 and 30mm.
Install the apparatus levelled and connect it while checking the good watertightness of the pipes connections and absorption
of eventual compressions.
Our apparatuses are designed to withstand to a ground water height than can reach the top of the separator, and with a
backfill height of 50cm as a maximum. Beyond 50cm, a load recovery slab is necessary. It will have to lean on the non turnedover ground.
Fill the apparatus with water (Note! On the hydrocarbon separators, the float must be raised) and backfill the perimeter
with sand up to the upper level of the apparatus.

In lack of load in surface, a simple packing down will make the backfill on the upper level.

In presence of moving loads with a slab: You must disconnect it from the work. Compacting will be done after
covering backfill.

In presence of moving loads without a slab: check the compatibility between the apparatus strength and the
compacting resources.
Make systematically a protection slab in armed concrete able to bear the loads indicated on the cast iron plugs.
Make the connection of the alarm.
