BTech (CSE/IT) 7th Semester
Paper Name- COMPUTER NETWORK-2

Time: Two Hours

MM: 60

Note:
(i) This question paper contains two Sections Section A and Section B.
(ii) Answer all questions in Section A - by choosing correct option from multiple choices. Each question
carries two marks.
(iii)Answer any four questions from Section B. Each question carries twelve marks.
Section A
1. Attempt all multiple choice questions choosing correct option.

(6 x 2 = 12 Marks)

(i) Which of the following is used to handle collisions in Ethernet networks?

(a)
Collision detection
(b)
Time division multiplexing
(c)
Polling
(d)
Exponential backoff
(ii) The numbers of pins on a RJ-45 connector at the end of a cat-5 cable is

(iii) To allow the sender to detect a collision in CSMA/CD
(a)
Frame must include a checksum
(b)
Frame must be encrypted and authenticated
(c)
Frame needs to be longer than some minimum length
(d)
Frame needs to be shorter than some minimum length
(iv) The ARP request is a broadcast message whereas the ARP response is a unicast message
(a)
The above statement is true
(b)
The above statement is false
(c)
The above statement is true only when more then one LAN is involved
(d)
The above statement is true only when the message is passing through
network layer devices
(v) What is the actual reason for limiting the Ethernet payload to 1500 bytes?
(a)
A longer frame increase the probability that one or more bits in the frame
will be received in error, necessitating retransmission of the frame hence an
optimum size of 1500 bytes
(b)
The longer the maximum frame allowed, the longer the maximum delay on
a shared medium.
(c)
A longer maximum frame increases the memory requirement for a NIC
using a simple, fixed buffer design
(d)
Frames need to be shorter than some maximum length
(vi) Number of bits present in MAC address

compare and contrast pure ALOHA and slotted ALOHA.

Show mathematically efficiency of both in relation to performance
What are the roles played by IGMP protocol and a wide-area multicast routing protocol?
Define and compare HUB, SWITCH and BRIDGE.

4. (a)

Discuss how similar and/ or dissimilar ARP is with DNS. Mention four lines each about RIP and
OSPF

(b)

In CSMA/CD protocol, the adapter waits K.512 bit times after a collision, where K is drawn
randomly. For K=100, how long does the adapter wait until returning to step 2 for a 10Mbps
Ethernet? For a 100 Mbps .

5. (a)

What is an important difference between implementing the broadcast abstraction via multiple
unicast , and a single network-(router-) supported broadcast and explain them.

(b)

what is the remainder obtained by dividing x7+x5+1 by the generator polynomial x 3+1 and

explain correcting single bit error using single bit parity?

6. (a)

Consider the following network. With the indication link costs, use LS algorithm to compute the
shortest path from A to all network nodes. Show the result in the tabular format.

(b). A host was shut down and its faulty network interface card was replaced with a new one effectively
giving it a new physical address. It will now cause the inconsistency of ARP table in the other host
in the same LAN because they have the old physical address associated with that node. How this
will be solved?
7.(a) Consider the network shown below, and assume that each node initially know the cost to each of its
neighbors. Consider the distance- vector algo and show the distance table entries at node Z.

Each question will have two parts. The first part will be of theory and the second part will be of
