Please join Ithaca College's Latin American Studies program for the second event in the
2012-2013 Speakers Series: a reading and discussion by Brazilian poet Salgado Maranho.
He will speak on Wednesday, October 3 at 7:00 p.m. in Williams 225. The translator of his
works, Alexis Levitin, will accompany him.
Salgado Maranho is one of Brazils leading
contemporary poets. His collected poems, The
Color of the Word, won Brazils highest award,
the Premio de Poesia da Academia Brasileira de
Letras, for the year 2011. An earlier
collection, Mural of Winds, won the prestigious
Prmio Jabuti in 1999. In addition to eight books
of poetry, including The Snakes Fists, The Kiss
of the Beast, and the recent Tigers Fur, he has
written song lyrics and made recordings with
some of Brazils leading jazz and pop musicians. His recent book of poems, Blood of the
Sun, has just been released in English, with translations by Alexis Lavitin.
Alexis Lavitin's translations of poems by this stylistically provocative poet have so far

Salgado Maranho
Salgado Maranhos A Cor da Palavra (The Color of the Word) was named
the best book of poetry by the Brazilian Academy of Letters in 2011. An
earlier collection, Mural de Ventos (Mural of Winds), won the prestigious
Prmio Jabuti in 1999. In addition to his nine books of poetry, Maranho
has written song lyrics and made recordings with some of Brazils leading
jazz and pop musicians. Sol Sangneo (Blood of the Sun) is Maranhos
first book to appear in English translation.

In poems brilliantly textured and layered, Salgado Maranho integrates socio-political


thought with subjects abstractly metaphysical. Concrete collides with conceptualbutcher
shops, sex, and machine guns in conversation with language, absence, and timeresulting
in a collection varied as well as unified, an aesthetic at once traditional and postmodern.
Writing in forms both fixed and free, Maranhos language suggests a jazz-like musicality
that rings true in Alexis Levitins masterful translations. For readers who enjoy the complexity
of Charles Simic, or the stylistically innovative syntax of Csar Vallejo, Maranhos Blood of
the Sun is a sensually provocative amalgamation of both.

Salgado Maranho, leading Afro-Brazilian poet, songwriter, and winner of Brazils highest literary
award (the Academy of Letters Prize), will present his newly translated collection, Blood of the
Sun(2012), with American translator Alexis Levitin on Tuesday, October 2, 2012 at 4:15 p.m. in
the Standish Room, Science Library on the University at Albanys uptown campus. The event is
free and open to the public, and is sponsored by the New
York State Writers Institute.
PROFILE
A native of Brazils dry, impoverished northeast, Salgado
Maranho is a leading contemporary Afro-Brazilian poet, as
well as a songwriter for many of Brazils most prominent
jazz, samba and pop musicians. The son of a black
fieldworker (mother) and a member of the white plantocracy
(father), Maranho describes himself as born both to
slavery and the manor house.
Translated by Alexis Levitin, Maranhos first bilingual
collection in English and Portuguese, Blood of the Sun [Sol
Sangne], will be released in September 2012.

Gregory Rabassa, bestselling translator of One Hundred Years of


Solitude, called the new translation, a perfect English rendering of
Salgado Maranhos deft expression of the tonality of this people and
land. Writing in World Literature Today, Kaitlin Hawkins said that
Maranhos new work combines his love of jazz with his love of the
written word. In verses that pair socio-political thought with abstract
and metaphysical subjects, Maranhos lines move with the rhythms
inherent to a Brazilian jazz ballad. Antonio Carlos Secchin, one of
Brazils preeminent literary scholars, said, Maranho has reached
the high point of his work (so far) a speculative intelligence and a
celebration of the corporality of the world are expressed with great
metaphoric vigor.
Maranho recently received Brazils highest literary award, the
Brazilian Academy of Letters Prize, for his collected poems, A Cor da
Palavra [The Color of the Word] (2011). An earlier collection, Mural de Ventos [Mural of
Winds] (1998) received the prestigious Prmio Jabuti. His other collections include A pelagem da
tigra [Tigers Fur] (2009), O Beijo da Fera [The Kiss of the Beast] (1996), and Os Punhos da
Serpente [The Snakes Fists] (1989). Maranho has also written lyrics and composed music for
an impressive roster of contemporary Brazilian musicians including Amelinha, Elba Ramalho, Ney
Matogrosso, Paulinho da Viola, Rosa Marya Colin, Vital Farias, and Zizi Possi among others. A
tribute album by various artists, Amoragio,was released in 2006.
Alexis Levitin, Professor of English at SUNY Plattsburgh, has published more than twenty-five
books of translation from Portuguese. His translations have appeared in Partisan Review,
American Poetry Review, Prairie Schooner, and hundreds of other literary journals. Earlier
translations include Clarice LispectorsSoulstorm (1989), Eugenio de Andrades Forbidden
Words (2003), and the Ecuadorean poetry anthologyTapestry of the Sun (2009).He is also the
author of a travel guide co-written with Gregory Rabassa, Brazil: A Traveler's Literary
Companion (2009).
