Please join Ithaca College's Latin American Studies program for the second event in the
2012-2013 Speakers Series: a reading and discussion by Brazilian poet Salgado Maranho.
He will speak on Wednesday, October 3 at 7:00 p.m. in Williams 225. The translator of his
works, Alexis Levitin, will accompany him.
Salgado Maranho is one of Brazils leading
contemporary poets. His collected poems, The
Color of the Word, won Brazils highest award,
the Premio de Poesia da Academia Brasileira de
Letras, for the year 2011. An earlier
collection, Mural of Winds, won the prestigious
Prmio Jabuti in 1999. In addition to eight books
of poetry, including The Snakes Fists, The Kiss
of the Beast, and the recent Tigers Fur, he has
written song lyrics and made recordings with
some of Brazils leading jazz and pop musicians. His recent book of poems, Blood of the
Sun, has just been released in English, with translations by Alexis Lavitin.
Alexis Lavitin's translations of poems by this stylistically provocative poet have so far
appeared in BOMB, Bitter Oleander, Brasil/Brazil, Connotation Press (on-line),
Controlled Burn, Cream City Review, Dirty Goat, Faultline, Fourth River, Left Curve,

Salgado Maranho
Salgado Maranhos A Cor da Palavra (The Color of the Word) was named
the best book of poetry by the Brazilian Academy of Letters in 2011. An
earlier collection, Mural de Ventos (Mural of Winds), won the prestigious
Prmio Jabuti in 1999. In addition to his nine books of poetry, Maranho
has written song lyrics and made recordings with some of Brazils leading
jazz and pop musicians. Sol Sangneo (Blood of the Sun) is Maranhos
first book to appear in English translation.

Salgado Maranho, leading Afro-Brazilian poet, songwriter, and winner of Brazils highest literary
award (the Academy of Letters Prize), will present his newly translated collection, Blood of the
Sun(2012), with American translator Alexis Levitin on Tuesday, October 2, 2012 at 4:15 p.m. in
the Standish Room, Science Library on the University at Albanys uptown campus. The event is
free and open to the public, and is sponsored by the New
York State Writers Institute.
PROFILE
A native of Brazils dry, impoverished northeast, Salgado
Maranho is a leading contemporary Afro-Brazilian poet, as
well as a songwriter for many of Brazils most prominent
jazz, samba and pop musicians. The son of a black
fieldworker (mother) and a member of the white plantocracy
(father), Maranho describes himself as born both to
slavery and the manor house.
Translated by Alexis Levitin, Maranhos first bilingual
collection in English and Portuguese, Blood of the Sun [Sol
Sangne], will be released in September 2012.

That liquid image, though it flees,
wings the mirror with utter ease
to an icy coupling, devoid of heat -a silent mating without meat.

Of the scratches sculpted
by a hand
only those that glow
survive.
A nomad, morning
strips bare the sun
on the surface
of the flesh,
multiple,
in the giddiness of language.
There are no floodgates
No paths prepared
No Saharas
or Viennas
In everything a battle
bedecked
with flowers
and coffins.
In everything a carving
on the other side

but dont surrender,
that only in a verse are seen,
in the peeling of the underside.

the breath of will, the breath of days.
