SPECIALISED ACCREDITATION
The University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT) has successfully explored uncharted territory by
becoming the first institution in Trinidad and Tobago, and the Caribbean region, to receive full
Chartered Engineering status by the Energy Institute, UK, for its Master of Engineering (M.Eng.)
in Petroleum Engineering Undergraduate degree.
The M.Eng. degree is awarded to students who complete an extended four-year period
of full-time study, subsequent to successful completion of UTTs Bachelor of Applied
Science (BASc.) degree. Chartered Engineering status ensures that UTTs graduates
have a recognisable, international engineering qualification which adequately
distinguishes and sets them apart.
Specialised programme accreditation has been granted by the following organisations
for UTTs programmes:
Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), United Kingdom:
Bachelor of Applied Technology (BTECH) in Electrical Engineering

Cooperative Education

The central tenet in the founding vision of UTT is the integration of business and
technology into the Universitys undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. One
approach adopted to achieve this is the incorporation of instructional methodologies
and technologies to enable collaboration in multi-disciplinary projects, problem-based
learning, team learning and student-centred instruction. The Learning Centre (TLC)
provides support for technology mediated learning and professional development to
benefit staff and students in developing the skills needed to become creative learners
and innovative teachers.
TLCs mandate is to leverage current and emerging learning technologies and
teaching methods which will enable UTTs instructors to develop innovative and
socially responsive programmes. The ultimate role of this academic support unit is
to help students develop the wide range of skills and competencies for learning and
communicating effectively at all levels. Another role is to work closely with academic
staff, to develop training and teaching strategies and resources which support the
development of students academic skills. TLC facilitates the preparation of UTTs
instructors to teach in a networked world.

UTT Libraries consist of a network of libraries, with one being located at each campus.
The Libraries, through their helpful and courteous staff, provide a wide range of
information resources, services and instruction, in support of the teaching, learning,
research and entrepreneurial activities of the University, as well as the overall holistic
personal development of students and staff.
The resources of each library are specifically geared to the programmes pursued at
the respective campuses. They include both print and electronic resources. These
can be accessed by using UTT Libraries OneSearch Discovery Service facility through
which the entire collection can be searched, or by using the online catalogue for
locating print and multimedia items. These facilities are available via the Libraries
link on the Universitys homepage or at http://u.tt/library.
UTT Libraries are comfortable with a pleasant ambience conducive to study, research

Operational Maritime
Management
MASTER OF SCIENCE PROGRAMME
Programme Brief
There are many shore-based careers in the Maritime Industry. These include careers as marine pilots, marine harbourmasters, maritime
lawyers, port captains, ship surveyors, terminal operators, cargo planners and many other support services.
Traditionally these jobs are filled by ex-seafaring officers and mostly those that have reached an on-board management position i.e.
Captain, Chief Officer, Chief or 2nd Engineer. Due to the current shortage of officers in the worldwide Merchant Fleet it is increasingly
difficult to identify ex-seafarers to take up these posts and they are now often filled by non-seafarers.
An article published in Fairplay Daily News dated 25th July, 2006 refers to this problem as applied to the United Kingdom, traditionally a
shipping nation, and the low levels of cadet recruitment to the United Kingdom Merchant Navy. The UK Transport Minister warns that the
UK will not have a shore-based shipping industry.
With the continuing growth of ports and shipping this problem will soon become critical in Trinidad and Tobago and there will be an
increased need for shore-based positions that require industry-wide maritime knowledge and experience.
In anticipation of the expected demand for expertise in this area, the M.Sc. Programme in Maritime Management is aimed at providing
a practical-based qualification that will be suitable and relevant to management positions in the shore-based maritime industry
infrastructure. It is anticipated that the applicants to this programme will be predominantly a mix of sea-going senior officers, planning to
move into a shore management position, and those who have experience in the shore-based side of the industry at a middle management
position. The programme will assist the seafarers in making the transition from ship to shore and the non-seafarers to understand the
problems associated with the sea-going sector of the industry.
This mix of experience along with the programme content will blend together to give all the students a fuller experience and understanding
of the industry.
