5.2

Flow Calculation
Via the Flow Calculation button and a selection window you can access the programme item
UseCAD Control and also Air valves

5.2.1

UseCAD Control
UseCAD Control is a design program for control valves. The flow medium is assumed to be
normal water.
Use this program to calculate the control tasks for the following VAG valves:
VAG RIKO Plunger Valve
VAG DURA Valve
VAG Hollow-Jet Discharge Valve
VAG EKN Butterfly Valve
VAG Wafer-Type Butterfly Valve
A stable flow status is assumed at every calculation point. Dynamic pressure changes caused by
a change of flow in the valve are not calculated.
The use of control valves depends on the piping system, which can be selected in the input pane.
The following options can be selected:
Control with constant inlet pressure
After you have entered your project data
and selected the control (menu with green
background), press Next to access the
next menu.

Enter the data for your system. If you do

not know the values of Zeta 1
(piping losses before the valve) and
Zeta 2 (losses after the valve), you can
calculate them with the subprogram
Calculate Zeta.

11

In the Calculate Zeta window, a new window

opens in which you can calculate the Zeta
value. Values for pipes and various piping
components can be calculated. However, the
calculation only provides reasonable results
for a common diameter of all components.
Click on Add to access the list of the
components you have selected. Click on Exit
to display the calculated values in the valve
calculation window.

After the data have been entered and / or the

Zeta value have been calculated, select the
type of valve and click on OK.

The system parameters can be modified in

the calculation window.
If values for the desired minimum and maxium
flow are entered in the Qmin and Qmax
fields the required degree of opening is
calculated.
Press Calculate to carry out the calculation.
The maximum output is calculated in the field
Max. flow. The types of controls can be
modified in the System field.
The height of the system can be entered in
the field Height above MSL. The entered
value affects the valve's cavitation security.
Changing air pressure above sea level has an
influence on the valves cavitation security.

12

Analysis:
Selecting the Output folder displays the system's
control diagram.
The opening angles for the minimum and maximum
flow are entered.
An almost linear gradient of the characteristic curve
is desirable.

Selecting the Cavitation folder compares the

system's cavitation diagram (black) to the valve's
cavitation diagram (blue and red).
The cavitation curves are based on tests carried
out in our own test centre and the flow laboratory of
Delft Hydraulics.
The blue line, the starting cavitation, shows the
valve's limiting curve. Slight cavitation or occasional
cavitation shocks are probable below this curve.
The red line is the valve's limiting curve at full
cavitation. In continuous operation, severe
cavitation and damage to the valve are
probable below this curve.

In the adjacent diagram, the system's black

cavitation curve runs below the valve's red
characteristic curve up to the opening angle of
approx. 43 for full cavitation. In this range (0 43), the valve is operated at full cavitation. A short
interruption or overshooting of the cavitation range
does not necessarily damage the valve
immediately.

Selecting the Noise level folder displays the

noise level curve of the valve.
The noise level is calculated according to VDMA
24422 and only computes the noise emission of the
valve. Any influences from pipeline sections
connected or noise caused by structures cannot
be taken into consideration.
The curve displays the calculated sound pressure
level (decibel) via the opening angle of the valve.

13

Control with variable inlet pressure

The characteristic curve must be entered in the
Pump / System menu. This is achieved by
entering the maximum pressure / zero delivery
height (Hmax) and the maximum flow (Qmax).

Based on these data, the program calculates a

characteristic curve of the equipment / pump
and computes the equipment characteristic
lines for valve opening degrees ranging from 0
100 %.
The calculation of the pressure upstream of the
valve is taken over into the calculation program
based on the characteristic line data
established.

Bottom outlet
Enter the data for your system. Click on
Enter to select a valve.
Here, Hmax is the maxium and Hmin the
minimum storage level before the valve.
Losses in the piping before the valve are of
particular importance for calculating bottom
outlets. To do this, Zeta1 can again be
entered directly or calculated (Calculate
button).

Select the valve type and click on OK.

14

Press Calculate to carry out the calculation.

Selecting the Output curve folder displays the

system's control diagram. The diagram displays
the flow rate at valve opening angles between
10% and 100% in conjunction with the overflow
level.

Level control
Enter the data for your system. If you do not
know the values of Zeta 1 and Zeta 2, you
can calculate them with the subprogramme
Calculate Zeta.
Select the valve and click on OK.
Enter your data according to the procedure
described for Analysis.

15

Air control
Enter the data for your system and click
on OK. According to the General
Technical Specifications (ATV), the
pressure lost through the valve should not
exceed 0.1 bar.
Select the valve and click on OK.

Enter any data that needs to be

entered. Click on Air to calculate
automatically the density (circled
in red).

16

5.2.2

UseCAD Air Valves

Besides a number of control and shut-off valves, the safe operation of a water supply network
also requires valves which ensure a safe stationary operating condition as well as the safe startup and shut-down of the equipment.
The following functions are controlled by automatic air valves:
Release of the air in the pipeline while it is being filled
Venting the pipeline while it is being emptied or in case of a pipe break.
Air release during operation to eliminate residual amounts of gas at operating pressure
An adequate automatic air valve is selected using UseCAD Air Valves in the following way:
In a first step you have to enter the medium
used.
Based on your selection, the programme will
retrieve valves for drinking water or waste
water applications for your calculation.

For the selection of the pipeline materials, the

most commonly used materials are available.
Depending on the pressure rating and
nominal diameter selected, the pipeline
dimensions will be added automatically.
Should your pipeline specifications deviate
from those suggested here, you can overwrite
them.

Depending on the material and condition of

the pipeline, you can enter various degrees of
roughness of the pipe.
To obtain suggestions, click on the button
to the right of the entry field.

17

To calculate the required valve size, the

Programme requires indications on the
volume flows in your system as specific
as possible. In the process, the
programme distinguishes between the
filling, operation and clearing volume
flow. For the filling process, the
programme calculates the pressure
surge to be expected when filling your
pipeline at the velocity entered. The
pressure surge should not exceed the
standard value of 3 bars.

Should you fill your pipeline with-out

control, the programme will calculate an
orifice diameter to limit the velocity of the
escaping air in order to achieve the
desired filling velocity. This orifice
diameter is also used in VAGs AntiSurge Solution.

Air valves used as protection devices

against pipe breaks can be calculated as
an option.
For this calculation a safety factor
against indentation of the pipeline must
be entered.
You can select the partial break size as
a per cent value of the pipeline diameter.
In case of no selection a standard value
of 50 % will be insert.

18

If you run the mouse cursor across the

text cross section of break, examples of
this will be shown.

Further available options are the selection

of the distances between valves in long
pipeline sections and the pre-selection of
the valve type if water is used as a
medium.
You can choose between:
VAG DUOJET: Single-chamber valve
VAG TWINJET: Double-chamber valve

You can enter an altitude profile either

manually or by entering the coordinates or
by importing the data needed from an
Excel spreadsheet.
Here it is sufficient if the spreadsheet is
open in the background and when you
click on the Excel Import button.

19

You can overwrite the default inlet

pressure (tank pressure) to adapt it to the
conditions of your equipment.

When you select the option Smooth

profile, minor fluctuations in the pipeline
course are suppressed. All peaks which are
not pronounced enough will no longer be
considered in the computation.

The results of the computation will be

displayed graphically in the form of the
elevation curve based on the data you
entered and as a table listing the valves to
be positioned.
The graphic representation offers the
possibility of having the numbers of the
individual pipeline sections and the coordinates displayed. It is also possible to
display the dynamic pressure curve to
identify criticial peaks, if required, where a
vacuum may build up.
The Auto-Scaling option enables you to
determine the number of pages of the
hardcopy. With this setting you determine
the number of pipeline points to be
displayed per page.

20

Critical highpoint means that the hydraulic

gradient line is lower than the level of the
pipeline or the Air valve.
If this condition happens the pipeline has to be
redesigned.

The displayed table shows the coordinates,

number of air valves and the selected valve
type.

The results of the computation can be printed

from the input and results page via the Print
key. It can also be saved as a pdf-file. The
results pages provide a clear overview of the
performance specifications indicated and the
graphic and tabular representation of the
results.

Via the Sales texts button you will get the

corresponding sales texts as a Word file.

21

The calculations of the programme are limited to the selection of the suitable valve size and a technically
adequate positioning of the valves in the pipeline system. To keep the number of input data low and thus
ensure simple and easy handling, the application range of the software is limited to gravitation systems
without critical peaks.

5.2.1 Selection of Elements

The BAIOplus System is built up from the centre of the
junction, which is why we recommend starting with the
centre piece (MMB or MTT). As a first step, mark the desired
valve / fitting in the list of elements. In the preview, the
selected valve (fitting) will be displayed. After you have
selected the fitting, you will have to select the respective
nominal diameter.
To do this, left-click on the arrow next to the nominal
diameter to display all the available sizes. Now select the
size. The system automatically recognizes the applicable
connectors and their nominal diameters. By clicking on the
picture (list of elements) or the Add button, drag the fitting
into the large drawing window. Here you can assemble the
junctions.

The connection points are marked in red.

After you have selected the next connector
and its nominal diameter, a box with a red
point is displayed at the nominal diameter of
the previously added part. Drag the new
piece to the point to which you would like to
connect it. The piece is automatically added
if the correct connection point was selected.
This is indicated by a green point. If the
selected point is not correct (usually the
nominal diameter), the piece cannot be
connected. Continue to select fittings and
valves until you have completed your
junction. To complete the junction, you have
to add an end-piece to each end-point. This
can be a pipe-end with or without pull-lock
(except for the PE-HD pipe which must
always have a pull lock, longitudinally nonpositive), a PEa fitting, an end-cap, a flange,
or a hydrant.
25

If your junction is completed, a green checkmark

is displayed next to your junction.

If your junction is not completed, a red cross is displayed.

After completing the first junction, you can continue adding junctions by clicking on New
junction. You can also copy junctions. This is done by displaying the selected junction, clicking
on Copy junc. and entering a new name for your junction (e.g. junction 4).

5.2.2 Alignment of Elements

The programme automatically defines the position of the components, but does not align them. If
you did not rotate the element (rotation button, see 7) before adding it, you can do so after adding
it. The function is included in the toolbar:

The Mirror and Rotate functions enable you to align the component any way you want.

5.2.3 Output of junctions

You can print out you junctions as a pdf of Excel file. To do so, open the selection list under menu
item File and select the document you would like to print.

Or make your selection via the menu bar

26

The resulting list shows all valves, fittings and their seals per junction. You also receive a
complete list of all BAIOplus System parts and valves you have used.

5.2.4 Output of the Sales Texts

For all system parts used in junctions you can generate individual sales texts. Thanks to this
function, you do not need to copy the various sales texts or make the nominal diameter specific
adjustments, which usually consumes a lot of time.
Via the function Display Sales text, all sales texts of the BAIOplus System parts and valves
needed are exported into a Word file.

The nominal diameter and/or quantities needed have already been adapted to the individual
tender texts.
27

5.2.5 Dimensions of the Required Pipe Trench

Both the actual drawing and the various output files contain information on the required
dimensions of your pipe trench. Please remember that dimensions are given in mm and are
indicated for your orientation. With the marked button it is possible to show and hide the
dimension information.

Alongside you have the possibility to change the dimension reference point.

First of all click the drawing element, which you want to select as dimension reference point (for
example Element 2 picture above). After that push the button: change reference point. The
dimension will adjust automatically. As you see Element 2 of the above picture is changed into
Element 1 (picture below).

28

5.2.6 Output of accessories

Via the Accessories button you can specify the stem extension to be supplied.
As a standard for the installation depth, the cover depth (1.20 to 1.80 m) is provided.
You can change it according to your requirements. Unfortunately, a different installation depth per
joint cannot be provided (no mixing).
Special lengths can be provided upon consultation with us by a subsequent change in the Excel
file only (and in the sales text).
All accessories (stem extensions and surface boxes) per valves and nominal diameters used are
added up automatically and are shown only in the list Summary of all joints as a pdf- or Excel
file.
The BAIOplus Planning Programme was developed to make planning with our system easier.

After selecting a valve, you can always return

to the tree structure via this symbol in the left
part of the window.

Selection of the nominal diameter

Viewing of tables
In the window which now opens up, all available
nominal diameters of the valve selected are displayed
(table tab). You select the desired diameter by marking
the respective line in the data table. To do so, mouseclick on one of the grey line numbers 1 to xy.

Another possibility of selecting a valve is through a filter which provides a more specific selection.
With the mouse click on the value of one specific parameter by which you want to limit the
number of choices.
Afterwards only those products will be displayed to which precisely this parameter applies (e.g.
PN=10 or C4=254).
30

Example: Here the filter value 254 for parameter C4 was defined. Now only those products are
displayed which correspond to the selected criterion.
To undo the filter function, just click on the filter symbol shown top left in the data chart.
Afterwards, all available products will be displayed again.

List view
In the list view (list tab) you can
select all dimensional
parameters via a context menu.

The following data formats are available for export:

View Component list

Before exporting the data you have the possibility of viewing the individual valve components. In
the field Assembly the list of components of the individual models is displayed. All these
31

individual components may be moved individually in the various planning systems after data
export. This provides the possibility of the individual design of actuators.

Positionsoptionen von funktionsrelevanten Modellkomponenten

In some data tables, you can find parameter fields highlighted in orange. These fields indicate
that certain position options of the 3D solid model can be selected (e.g. open/closed), (with or
without bypass) for the resilient-seated gate valve. in the example below, the disk of the valve is
open.

When you click on the orange field of the desired product, a selection field opens. It provides the
possibility of moving the position of the disk from open to closed or the option of selecting with
or without bypass.
The data are exported in the variety selected.
32

Changing the view of the model

Clicking on the model with the left mousekey opens a selection window and gives you various
activity options:
Beginning with the rotation and panning of the model, the activation of an animation and the
