Regardless of trepidation about a 30

per cent loss in attendance with rodeos
in surrounding areas due to an economic downturn, the Strathmore Stampede
attracted record numbers last weekend
numbers that are being credited to the
signature events reputation, changes in
advertising, and a large number of new
venues and attractions.
Crowds flocked to Canadas third
largest rodeo this year, eager to score
a front-row seat for the acclaimed 12th
annual Running With the Bulls event,
hoping to get into the cabaret that was
forced to turn hundreds of people away,
or enter their furry four-legged friend in
the latest competition the Dachshund
races.
Although plummeting numbers at
nearby attractions suggested Strathmore
may be facing a similar fate, the Strathmore and District Agricultural Society
were pleasantly surprised when Strathmores numbers contradicted those predictions.
This held especially true, when the
Strathmore Family Centre reached its
1,800 people capacity and a line-up of
roughly 300 patrons were eagerly waiting to get into the cabaret.
Our cabaret, we were turning people away, thats how busy we were,
said Brad Walls, president of the Strathmore and District Agricultural Society. I
havent seen crowds at the cabaret like
that since 2006. Obviously we were expecting a downturn, and that not happening shows us were doing something
right and whatever that is, were going
to continue on that path.
For more than a year, staff and volunteers have implemented numerous
changes and worked hard on expanding the Stampede experience. These
changes included different musical
performances, various entertainment
which had a greater focus on teenagers
than before and switching the Monday
schedule to feature the chuckwagon finals before the rodeo finals.

Surrounded by his fellow volunteers
and his family, Bruce Bishop was moved
to tears when he was caught off-guard
and presented with the Keith Schneider
Award for his years of hard work and
volunteer efforts.
Bishop, whos been volunteering in
Strathmore for over 31 years, including
taking on a crucial role for the Alberta
55 Plus Summer Games and never wavering to lend a helping hand with the
Strathmore Lions Club, was not expecting the recognition on Aug. 2.
I walked out there with my wife and
kids and I didnt see them so I didnt
know what was going on until they told
me to turn around, recalled Bishop.
I like to keep busy and its part of
the family. My dad and my sister each
worked for their community and always
volunteered. I knew Keith and I knew
him all the time he was alive.
Bishop added that receiving this specific award carries more weight because
of what and who it represents.
The Strathmore and District Agricul-
tural Society dedicated their excellence

award to Keith Schneider, a former
mayor and an influential person in the
community, in 2010. Having received
the award himself, Pascal Del Guercio,
chairman of the Strathomre Pro Rodeo
Committee, cant think of anyone more
deserving to have accepted the recognition this year.
Bruce Bishop has been a big worker
here for many years, I cant tell you how
long and last night it was his turn,
said Del Guercio. When you see an old
man cry you know youve touched their
heart. Its special to recognize him for
the work hes done. Ive been around
here a long time and it seems that besides the seagulls out here on a regular basis, I see Bruce. Hes a workaholic
and hes always here. I dont remember a
year when he hasnt been here.
Bishop is the second Strathmore Lions Club member to have received the
award, with Gordon Prusky having been
awarded the honour previously.
While Bishop is not one to sit still, he
planned on putting up his feet for a bit
once all the Strathmore Stampede cleanup was taken care of on Aug. 3.

As we age, our skin changes. It gets thinner,
bruises easier and can become quite dry. To slow
down skin aging, sun sensibly, dont smoke and keep

The type of toothbrush you use is not as important
and HOW you use it. Some people prefer the
electric toothbrush because some have a timer that
forces brushing for at least 30 seconds per quadrant.
Others prefer the manual brush which can be fine
if its used properly. Its important to get the brush
close to the gums to remove all the plaque from the
gum line.
When you start on a blood pressure-reducing
pill for the first time, you may experience lightheadedness, extra urination or fatigue. Dont stop
taking the drug. Side effects do lessen with time so
stick to it.
Many drug products have moved from prescription
only to over the counter. It wasnt that long
ago you could not buy ibuprofen (for pain and
inflammation) or ranitidine (for heartburn) without
a prescription. But just because they dont need
a prescription, you should get some professional
advice before using them. Our pharmacists can

Wildrose challenges bulls for Foothills campaign

Strathmore-Brooks MLA Derek Fildebrandt and Wildrose Party Leader Brian
Jean are accustomed to taking the bulls
by the horns in the legislature, but last
weekend, the two politicians voluntarily stepped onto the Strathmore rodeo
grounds to take on the actual horned
animals all in the name of winning the
Calgary-Foothills by-election.
Moments after Fildebrandt addressed
Strathmores prestigious Running With
the Bulls event at the legislature, handwritten notes from the NDP members
soon made their way to the MLA encouraging him to participate and thus
inspiring the idea.
Within 10 minutes of announcing the
challenge, that Fildebrandt and Jean
would run in the 12th annual Running
With the Bulls event during the Strathmore Stampede if $5,000 are raised,
over $3,500 quickly accumulated. Since
then, the grassroots members have surpassed their $5,000 goal in what they
called a creative way to raise funds.
I think I realized, that eventually
steak wants to eat human from time to
time, said Fildebrandt. I got a small
grazing but otherwise pretty fine, but I
was behind some of the worst injuries,
luckily behind not in front. Its not my
first rodeo but it was certainly not the
usual duties of an MLA, but it was also

a great way to promote the Strathmore

Stampede in what is a pretty unique
event.
According to Fildebrandt the event
garnered more attention and traction
in the government since the announcement, and even received donations
from politicians in northern Alberta.
Jean, whose father was a rancher, called
the experience exhilarating and is eager to repeat the experience.
Theres nothing more important
than coming together with a community of strong supporters and an event
thats so incredible, Jean said. This is a
great Alberta event and were proud to
be a part of Alberta.
Inspired by the famed event in Pamplona, Spain, where a number of bulls
run through the town streets, the contest has played a predominant role in
the Strathmore Stampede since 2003.
Just over 120 participants over the
weekend some dressed in costumes
confronted the brawny bulls as two
victorious winners took home $1,000.
It was stupid but it was a blast, said
Matt Hillhouse, who won Saturdays
event and participated in the Running
With the Bulls for the first time. I just
got right in there and I didnt want to

mess around. I figured itd be a good
chance, even if I didnt win, itd be a
good time, and it was. I dont think Im
going to sleep for two days.
Hillhouses previous experience with
Strathmore was the occasional cup of
Tim Hortons coffee on his way through
the town, but upon hearing of the event
advertised on the radio, he decided to
give it a try a decision that resulted in
him taking home the winnings on Aug.
1.
Then, on the following day, Christian
James also received the lump of money,
when he got up close and personal with
the bovines. Unlike Jean, James had no
prior experience with the animals.
I tried to have a lot of fun, and I dont
know what to say, I just tried to get
in its face, James said. I dont know
much about animals and I thought
itd be scary. I wanted to do something
I was afraid of.
While some broken bones and injuries are not keeping many of the participants away from trying again next
year, Fildebrandt is setting his sights
higher. Next year he is shooting to raise
$10,000.

Strathmore RCMP is currently

investigating a theft from vehicle that
occurred on Orchard Park Drive. On
July 16th, An unknown female got out
of a broken down Nissan Murano
and flagged down a passing motorist.
While the victim exited to provide
assistance, a male suspect went
through the victims vehicle, stealing
several items including a garage door
opener. RCMP are advising motorists
to be vigilant to similar situations.

As frustrations regarding the lack of medical equipment
at the Strathmore hospital continued to mushroom over the
past three decades, a new medical clinic is relieving some
pressures and filling a considerable need, by re-introducing
state-of-the-art technology back into the community.
The Pinnacle Medical Clinic, which recently opened up
in Strathmore and had its ribbon cutting ceremony on July
31, is actively recruiting doctors, housing a Peak Pulmonary
Function lab and a Peak Sleep Apnea and Snoring clinic, and
is hoping to bring specialists to the town for a day to help
eliminate residents costly and burdensome trips to Calgary.
We lost those services in Strathmore about a decade ago,
said Dr. Rahim Damji, who is a family physician at the new
clinic. Theres not a demand to keep those services here
every day, but if we can be proactive and organize patients
and ones from other clinics and bring them all together and
book a day for a cardiologist, instead of them having to go
there, then we can bring them here.
With the addition of the pulmonary function technology,
the first of its kind in Strathmore, patients are no longer
obligated to make their way to the city. The lab is ideal for
testing any lung issues, ranging from asthma to lung cancer,
by measuring a patients lung volume, diffusion levels, and
performing a Spirometry test.
Its really helpful that they can have it done here, said
Amin Thawer, owner of Pinnacle Medical Clinic.
We have a really good relationship with Calgary Co-op and
weve opened-up numerous sites in Calgary and we thought
this would be an excellent site, knowing that patients need

these medical services. With the help of Dr. Damji, whos

been in Strathmore for many years, it just seemed like a natural partnership.
The addition of the Strathmore location signalled the Pinnacle Medical Clinics seventh location. Since the facility,
which currently contains an overall staff of five, can accommodate up to four physicians, the prospect of attracting more
doctors to the area is a good sign to some local politicians.
The Pinnacle Medical is looking to bring more doctors
into their clinic, and theres a huge need for more doctors,
so this is very, very good, said Mayor Michael Ell, who was
present at the ribbon cutting ceremony.
The more growth we meet, the more we need medical
services, and this is just one more being added. Im personally pleased to see them here.
The Pinnacle Medical Centre opened its doors at 120 Edgefield Place at the Co-op location in Strathmore. The clinic is
currently accepting new patients.

Intersection to receive upgrades

Town council is moving ahead with a
traffic signal installation, shortly after a
right-in-right-out lane was constructed
at an intersection earlier this year making the roadway more active and well
attended.
Since the construction of the lane at
Canal Avenue and Highway 1, which
closed at the median on Highway 1 at
the Strathmore Motor Products, expectations of vehicles making eastbound
left turns from the busy roadway, and
southbound left turns from Westmount
Road, are on the rise.
With a possible solution, council was
asked to consider proceeding with the
construction of the traffic signal at Westmount Road and Highway 1 as well as a
flashing indicator for eastbound traffic,
despite the developers to the south of
the highway unwilling to contribute to
the project.
With a price tag of $501,000, a proposal was made to Alberta Transportation for cost sharing of one-third of the
project. Because the development to
the south was deemed as being a significant beneficiary of the traffic signal,
it was originally intended for the developers to also contribute one-third of the
portion. Despite the setback, the town
is within their budget to consume twothirds of the costs.
The initial consideration that we had
was that we would also get a third cost
funding from developers, said Gord
Elenko, director of engineering for the
Town of Strathmore. The project was
included into the 2015 capital program.
At this time two-thirds of the project
costs will be paid by the town and that
does fall within our existing budget.
The town contracted Allnorth Engineering to design, manage, and tender the traffic signals project. Alberta
Transportation has also committed to
an amount not to exceed $167,000.
While tender amounts varied from just

over $266,000 to more than $385,000,
council decided to award the project to
Black and McDonald Ltd., the lowest
bidder.
I think this is overdue, said Councillor Denise Peterson. This is something
thats going to save lives and its a great
idea. Im really glad that were moving
forward with it.
Council was also made aware that
the Municipal Government Act prevents
those projects situated on provincial
highways to be included in off-site levies. Therefore, this particular project is
not included in the proposed 2015 offsite levies.
While the project was met with ap-
proval by council, Councillor Bob Sobol

is relieved changes are finally taking
place at that section of roadway.
Its an intersection that scares me,
said Sobol. Anytime I go through there,
I would rather go elsewhere than go
through that intersection. So I think its
a great idea, and Im glad that we apparently saved some money with the
tender. It doesnt feel like we saved
money, but we did.
According to administration, the developers are required to complete a
Traffic Impact Assessment (TIA) as a
condition of development approval by
Alberta Transportation.
The expected completion date is
scheduled before Oct. 31.

for brain cancer:
Kaidens story

Cooped up in a hospital room with chemotherapy dripping into his veins was not the childhood
Ashley and Eric had envisioned for their two-yearold son Kaiden. Five months ago, during a visit
to Montreal, the youngster resembled most other
children his age. Kaiden was his energetic, playful self, until he suddenly expressed flu-like symptoms; ones his small body wasnt able to shake.
Without any other indications of the flu accompanying his ongoing vomiting, his small deteriorating body caused his parents to take action and
rush him to the hospital.
Following a CT scan and MRI, Ashley and Eric
were informed that a five-cm-long tumour was
pressing on Kaidens cerebellum and the likelihood was it had spread to his spine.
It was probably the longest week ever, and that
was rock bottom right there, said Erik Dressler.
At least it was operable and it gave us a chance
and it wasnt terminal. But at the time we didnt
know and we thought it was. Its so rare in kids
under five, and the chance of him getting it is ridiculously small.
Further tests revealed that Kaidens brain cancer
had indeed spread to his spine. While doctors believed they removed all of the mass in his brain,
the five to eight tumours left in his spine required
intense chemotherapy treatments, which forced
the two-year-old to remain in the Alberta Childrens Hospital for two to three weeks a month.
Although the light at the end of the tunnel is near,
and Kaiden is done his treatments towards the end
of September, Ashley said discussions about possible radiation may be necessary if any of the cancer
survives the treatment. Because of his young age,
the couple was told radiation could have serious
consequences not being able to graduate from
high school and never being able to live on his
own - and was not ideal.
Hes done really well and they say children just
handle it sometimes better than adults, they just
kind of go with it, said Ashley Dressler. Its a different life than you expected. Now our weeks, instead of doing little fun things with his friends, Im
having to go to the hospital three times a week.

Even though cancer was absent on both sides

of the family, the impact Kaidens illness had on
the family, sparked ambitions to raise money and
awareness for early detection and research.
During her efforts to raise funds and spread the
word about a brain cancer fundraising event shes
organizing for the family, Kelley Akister, Kaidens
great aunt, was met with disappointment when
she received little feedback.
Im just trying to get the word out there, and
my husband and I have donated throughout the
community and to not get a good response is
kind of breaking my heart; maybe because its so
close to home, said Akister. I was hoping to get
more support from the Strathmore people and I
know times are tough right now, but they cant be
tougher than that. But Ill keep going. Im going to
Langdon and the rest of Strathmore.
Friends and family members are pitching in to
help meet the $100,000 goal, and Akister has already received help through donations for the silent auction in the form of baskets, quilts, shirts,
and hockey tickets.
While her hope is for some of the contributions
to help out the family, Eric seemed adamant for
most of money to be donated to the Brain Tumour
Foundation of Canada.
Before this happened Ive never been this close
to it, and you always think of cancer as this thing
that doesnt really affect you, but for it to happen to you, you look at it differently, said Eric.
No matter what, this is now a part of us now.
This will always affect us, so were always going
to be involved in raising money and awareness.
The silent auction will be held at the Cheadle
Hall on Sept. 12 at 6 p.m. For more information

Celebrating our emergency services

Every day men and women in the emergency
services protect and serve the community.
One member of the public, Chris Morgan, wants
to give something back to them by celebrating the
job they do and the people behind the uniforms.
Morgan wants to break the notion that these
people are not part of the community when in
fact they are and their job is a vital one.
Every time you call one of them out its because something bad has happened, said Morgan.
I want the public to know that they are people
too. It is for them to say you know we are people
too, we have a job to do and we do it.
Morgan wants to celebrate the people behind
emergency services such as the Strathmore RCMP,
the peace officers, the fire services, ambulance

and EMTs, Stars and Hawks.
He has spoken with these groups to see how
they like the idea of a party and so far he has gotten positive feedback.
M&M Meats have offered to do a BBQ and there
have been talks with Stars to do a low-level fly
over. Members of the public are invited to take
part in a Q&A session with some of the service
members.
Morgan meet with town council to discuss a
possible date and place for the celebration. He is
aiming to have it at Kinsmen Park or the Strathmore Civic Centre at the end of August before the
schools start up again or the middle of September.
He also wants members of the public who have
been helped by any of these services to write a letter to them to present it to the services on the day.
Council approves blended rate

The Town of Strathmore and the Wheatland
Kings Junior B Hockey team came to an understanding on July 8, by introducing a blended rate
for the Wheatland Kings a permanent rate that
will prove beneficial for all young adult competitive teams.
The Wheatland Kings addressed the issue of a
blended rate with council last July, in hopes of
cheaper ice rental fees, which in turn provide a
chance for the teams revival.
Without a blended rate already in place an action that requires specific processes town council
agreed to allow the team to be charged the youth
rate for one year and thus provide them with a
leg up. While the decision proved beneficial to the
players, aged 17 to 24, town councils revenues
took a hit of a couple thousand dollars. With the
2014-2015 season in the past, council was asked
to consider a blended rate going forward to please
both parties.
When we started to think about what were
going to do this year, the blended rate came up
throughout the year in talking with minor hockey
and the Wheatland Kings, and I think its a great
solution because they dont really fit either category, said Tracy Simpson, community services coordinator for the Town of Strathmore.
Theyre not youths and theyre not adults, and
we want to make sure that the programs is successful and these players can afford to play this
level of hockey at their age. But we also want to
make sure that were still being financially prudent
to the facility and the taxpayers.
The blended rate of $157.50 for prime time is

sandwiched in between the adult rates of $186.95
and youth rate of $128.40. The non prime time
rate for all three categories remains constant at
$116.20.
Although the Wheatland Kings will be charged
a substantially lower fee than at an adult rate, the
team will be paying $5,000 more than last year.
They gave us the youth rate, which is the same
as what the minor hockey teams paid, to give us
a hand up at the kick off year, said Wheatland

Kings president Mike Langen.
Obviously its going to be quite a bit more cost-
ly for our team but were ok with that. Thats kind
of where we are, in that difference between minor
hockey and adult pick-up hockey. Im really happy
with councils decision and their support for us.
We were worried that it was going to be a full
adult rate and then that wouldve put some serious
dampers on the season.
The roster is made up of 25 athletes that are either busy working or attending post-secondary education. The Strathmore Minor Hockey Association
and the Strathmore Wheatland Kings Jr. Hockey
Association struck an agreement in early 2014, to
revive the Junior B team for the 2014-2015 season.
I find this to be a fairly ingenious way of dealing with this issue and I appreciate the direction
you have gone, so I totally support this, said
Councillor Bob Sobol to administration at the regular council meeting on July 8 when the issue was
brought before council.
Council gave third and final reading to the Fees
Bylaw Amendment Bylaw to allow for the blended
rate to take effect. Councillor Pat Fule and Councillor Brad Walls were not in attendance.

Standing up for seniors in Canada

Parliamentary Report

As your Member of Parliament, I have always
been glad to work closely with the seniors community all across our large riding. The Government
of Canada has developed a considerable amount of
programs and services that are aimed at improving
the lives of Canadians.
As your MP, I work to ensure that all corners of
our riding are informed about and have access to
opportunities that support our senior population. I
am pleased to report that we have very caring and
capable community leaders in our senior ranks and
everyone always responds to alerts from me concerning applications for programs, new initiatives
and more.
Over the years, especially in our less populated
regions, we see the importance of projects that
benefit seniors in our Crowfoot riding, the New
Horizons for Seniors Program for example. Many
of you will recall the numerous announcements
that our government has made as federal support
has helped build, upgrade, refurbish or add to facilities that serve our local senior citizens.
Reducing the social isolation of Canadas senior
citizens is a major goal of the federal governments
efforts. Health and Social Transfers to the provinces pay for many services and support, but there is
much more that the federal government does.
Whenever I have had the opportunity to team
up with local officials and seniors groups, I have
always found and appreciated innovative partners.
Their diverse knowledge base, resources and collective experiences help us explore new and meaningful ways we can keep seniors active, engaged
and informed. Our Government recognizes the
valuable contribution seniors have made to our society and the economy. We are acting to ensure that
seniors maintain quality of life and continue to be
active members of their communities.
In our area of Alberta, you can dial 2-1-1 on your

phone for information about government and local community programs and services. This line is
available 24 hours a day and is a great example
of how community partners work together as it is
sponsored by the United Way Centraide and others.
1 800 O-Canada (1-800-622-6232) is another
handy contact point for seniors or www.seniors.
gc.ca. Service Canada centers have information
available about Government of Canada programs
and services, including Old Age Security and the
Canada Pension Plan.
Our Government has provided Canadians with
close to $76 billion this year through Canadas public pension system. We provided a top up to the
Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) in 2011 to
help Canadas most vulnerable seniors. This was
the largest increase in 25 years to the GIS for the
lowest-income seniors. This measure further improves the financial security and well-being of
more than 680,000 seniors across Canada.
We are working hard to address elder abuse with
awareness campaigns. Projects funded by the New
Horizons for Seniors Program raise awareness of
elder abuse and legislation helps ensure consistently tough penalties for offences involving the
abuse of elderly people.

The change-up in schedule resulted in the largest crowd for the chuckwagon finals and a large
swarm of spectators for the rodeo finals.
The society attributes some of the turnout to
the reallocation of advertising dollars that were
spent on various radio stations. One such radio
advertisement attracted an individual to run with
the bulls; he then ended up taking home the
$1,000 prize.
Its part of our identity as a town, a district,
and a community, said Herb McLane, general
manager for the Strathmore and District Agricultural Society. The rodeo is a big part of Strathmores history, therefore its legacy, and judging
by the crowd a lot of people still love the rodeo.
Whether its the rodeo, the wagons, the running
with the bulls, or a combination between livestock and man, I think it says a lot of the fabric
of our community and the values we hold dear.
Even though a midway was not securable, the
society focused their attention on providing families, teenagers, and adults with enough attractions to keep one occupied.
The society received feedback, specifically
regarding the Heritage Wine Cellar, which was
presented by the Co-op. However, for Chairman

of the Strathmore Pro Rodeo Committee, Pascal
Del Guercio, whos been involved in the event
for years, the Strathmore Stampede remains unpredictable.
Some years just go better, because there are
some match ups between the livestock and the
cowboys, and we had some awesome horses
and great bull riders, bronc riders, and bareback
riders, Del Guercio said. There were no incidents in any of the chuckwagon races, none in
the livestock with the rodeo, and weve had a
long record where weve never had a problem.
At the end of the day, all I can say is Im really
happy, everyone was safe, everyone had a good
time, and a lot of money was won by some of the
cowboys.
According to Del Guercio, the four-day-long
event awarded contestants with a total sum of
approximately $350,000.
While the society deals with numerous other
events throughout the year, the team will already
start planning for next years signature event.
It was one of the best weekends weve ever
had, said Walls. Weve had very few incidents
on the park, and we are looking forward to a bigger and better next year.

Town places emphasis

on Strathmores taxi industry

Town council tasked administration to review the
Taxi Bylaw, after concerns
from numerous citizens alleged the industry of turning
a blind eye to the bylaws regulations and raised red flags
among councillors regarding
health and safety.
Councillor Bob Sobol addressed the issue on July 22,
resulting in a motion for administration to review bylaw
08-25 in a revised motion pertaining to the licencing regulation and control of the taxi
industry, and bring it back to
council for consideration.
I reviewed the bylaw and
I must admit it does contain
a number of rules and regulations, which are designed to
provide our citizens and visitors with an acceptable level
of service in the taxi industry, said Councillor Bob Sobol.
Regrettably Ive had many
experiences passed on to me
from our citizens, which suggest that a number of these
rules and regulations are being ignored. Without going
into great detail, its fair to
say that some action is needed which will be designed to
raise the level of service of
our taxi service in the immediate future.
Sobol also requested the
appointment of a chief taxi
inspector in order to provide
consistency to the industry
and allow for complaints to
be heard. According to the
Municipal Government Act,
council is able to pass bylaws
under the safety, health, and
welfare of people and property, transportation and transportation systems, and business, business activity and
persons engaged in business.
The act furthermore recognizes that council by bylaw
may establish committees and
other bodies.
There are different ways
to regulate the issue from
taxi commissions to peace of-
ficers to administrators, said

Sobol. Personally, I feel that
appointing one individual to
oversee this area would be a
benefit to all.
He also referred to wheelchair accessibility, which is
lacking in Strathmore, and
his desire for its implementation - an opinion shared by
other councillors. Sitting on
the Seniors Advisory Committee, I have to echo Councillor Sobols concerns, and
definitely the one with regards to wheelchairs, said
Councillor Denise Peterson.
Thats the one that theyve
made council aware of and
also issues related to safety.
I know that when I say this,
I can say it on behalf of the
committee, this is something
that theyll welcome.
Chief Administrative Officer Dwight Stanford, said
administration is already
talking with other communities, including Airdrie, about
their bylaws, with intentions
of making the ones in Strathmore tougher. He also stated
that currently only peace officers are able to write certain
tickets, which he hopes could
be changed in the future to
include bylaw officers. However, he agreed with council
that complaints regarding the
taxi industry have been piling
up.
While the emphasis was
placed on wheelchair accessibility and the aging population, Councillor Pat Fule was
more worried about his students.
Being a teacher at Strathmore High School, we have
a lot of students who use the
taxi services, said Fule. So
you have minors riding these
vehicles, and so I think safety and health and quality of
service is a huge thing as far
as the young people are concerned too.
With Mayor Ell absent from
the July 22 council meeting,
council voted to task administration with reviewing and
revising the Taxi Bylaw to be
brought back before council.

When John Moerschbacher moved to
Rosebud in 2012, bringing years of beekeeping experience, he began sharing
his knowledge with others. By the summer of 2013, about a dozen beekeepers
were keeping hives around Rosebud.
Two of them were friends Jordan Cutbill and Kelsey Krogman, who started
three hives in 2012, learning from Moerschbacher step-by-step.
When they install a new hive, Krogman explained, they put in the queen,
then the other bees on top. They also
leave honey for bees to eat until they
gather pollen and nectar. The hives first
goal is to make more bees.
You need lots of population to collect
all the nectar and pollen, and then to
get the bees through the winter because
they need each other to stay warm, she
said.
The bees second goal is to produce
honey. Beekeepers wont harvest until
the bees have enough for themselves.
When honey stops flowing in fall, beekeepers winterize the hives.
That means wrapping them closely,

theres enough ventilation ... but also
that they stay warm enough, said Krogman. Over and above taking honey, you
want to have hives that survive year after year.
Following Moerschbachers example,
Krogman and Cutbill practice gentle,
chemical-free beekeeping.
I havent been stung yet in three
years of beekeeping, and I dont wear
equipment, said Krogman.
To handle mites, they sprinkle bees
with icing sugar, which the bees clean
off, making the mites fall off as well.
(The mites) fall to the bottom of the
hive and they cant jump back onto the
bees, she said.
In October 2014, Krogman and Cutbill
went to wrap their hives for winter, only
to find all three hives almost empty. The
few bees left were dead.
They had actually frozen to death,
she said. The bulk of the bee population was just gone.
They can only speculate, Krogman
said, but the most likely explanation
is that a nearby crop, re-flowering in
the unusually warm weather, had been
sprayed one afternoon, the time when
bees usually feed.
When the weather turned cool, the
hives didnt have enough bees to keep
each other warm.
Despite the setback, Krogman and
Cutbill expanded this spring from
three hives to 13.
If it was strictly about (selling) honey,
we couldnt do what were doing, said
Krogman. Were just barely able to expand our equipment and our expenses.
Her primary commitment is more basic.
I believe, first of all, in the necessity
of pollinators in this world ... and sort
of working alongside them, she said.
Thats really all that were doing.
Theyre doing a few things differently
after last years loss.
The one thing that weve added to
our approach is to find a second location on the other side of the valley, she
said.
Theyre also planning conversations
with local farmers.
Were here trying to practice (beekeeping) and youre here trying to raise
a crop, she said. How can we work together?
This years dry conditions hampered
the early production of pollen and nectar, Krogman said, and they needed
to re-queen one hive. But after recent
rains, 12 of the new hives are doing well
and look like theyll be well-prepared
for their first Alberta winter.

County to replace culverts by school project

Wheatland Countys Infrastructure and Transportation Services General Manager, Dave
Churchill, and his team stumbled across drainage problems and infrastructure replacement
issues following various studies on the culverts
just south of the Golden Hills School Division
project.
The concern came up recently, years after the
file was removed from the provinces bridge file
list, when it was considered a non-issue and the
County did not know the problems existed until
the studies were conducted.
The fact that it qualified as a bridge file was
re-discovered while we were reviewing the design of the road and in order to accommodate
the drainage we had our consultant check the
flows and design a culvert that will handle the
design flows, said Churchill.
On Range Road 222, south of the East Wheatland School project, the culvert will be installed
along with the reconstruction of the road, and be
expanded from 1.2 metres to 1.6 metres in diameter to accommodate a better drainage system.
Thats what caused the problem on that road
all along with the drainage, said Churchill.
Churchill does not expect weather conditions
to play a role in the drainage issue, but said if
there were changes in the weather patterns there
could be an impact.
I would say for the time of year and the type
of year that were having, it wont be an issue,
he said.
Typically the issue would be in the spring. If
weve had a really heavy snow fall and the snow
all melts at the same time.
He expects that the new culvert will be here
in a month and installation will get underway
shortly after its arrival.
The project will cost roughly $175,000.

Rodeo championship a tightly contested affair

The 2015 Strathmore Stampede had a lot of tight
competition in the finals on Aug. 3 as it came down to
a matter of seconds or a couple of points to determine
who brought home a big payday and the famous belt
buckles.
Team roping duo of Clay Ullery and Kevin Schreiner
took home the top prize, claiming $1759 with a time
of 11.4 seconds on a two head.
Ullery said that the Strathmore Stampede was a great
week for them and that the momentum and luck was
in their favour.
Weve been having a great week and just caught
another one, said Ullery. Strathmore is awesome. We
dont get to stay here all weekend, we were at three
other rodeos, but I love coming here and roping for
big money and the crowd is always good.
He felt a little nervous coming in as the steer wasnt
being directed properly at first but once they settled in

then everything fell into place.
We were fast in our first one and our steer didnt
run like he was supposed to, that sometimes puts you
off your game, said Ullery. But we got by him and it
was all good.
Saddle Bronc Rider, Chuck Schmidt, narrowly won
the rodeo with 87.75 points over the next closest rider,
Zeke Thurston, who sat at a close 86.75.
The Keldron, S.D. native has been here a few time
before and said the horse gave him a real challenge.
I was expecting the horse to be a little easier but it

The weekend was great, said Smith. I ended up
not making the short end in the bulldogging, I was
6/10 off of making it, but to make it in the bull riding

The 20-year-old Idahoan added that there were challenges throughout the weekend but he made adjustments when he had to.
You just got to take it step-by-step, its kind of hang
on, thats what Ive been going by now, he said.
Strathmore and District Agricultural Society General
Manager, Herb McLane, thought this years Stampede
went was a successful one and he was thrilled with the
quality of livestock and riders.
I think the rodeo was fantastic, said McLane. We
measure success of course in terms of the crowd, the
quality of performances, the quality of livestock competition. We had great weather all week and we had
very few turnarounds. I think that indicative of the
calibre of competition at this rodeo.

For the second year in a row, Jason
Glass and his infamous checkerboard
chuckwagon have won the Strathmore
Stampede July 31 to Aug. 3.
Glass, along with outriders Chad
Cosgrave and Chanse Vigen, posted an
aggregate time of 4.59.79 to claim the
championship
It was great, said Glass. It was an
up-and-down summer for us. The horses have been strong and running really
well all summer, but they deserve it.
It was that time of year where the
stock was getting thin and Glass had
to dig deep into the barn to find the
right combination with the horses that
were available to him.
Its near the end of the year and I
went through the whole barn, said
Glass. I think there was one horse out
of 23 that have never gone this weekend and thats two horses whove never been in a wagon race.
Glass could not praise the committee any more for a job well done on
the track.

The committee did a great job on the

could not have asked for a better outcome from a fan favourite rider.
When you see him come across a
finish line, the crowd is excited and
what more could we offer to the
crowd? asked Del Guercio.
He was pleased with not only the
competitiveness of the races, but the
close ones they had encountered,
which was contributed to the grounds
being in tip-top shape.
Weve had four wagons straight
across the finish line in a dozen heats
in the last two days, said Del Guercio.
That tells us the ground is good. The
guys are racing competitive and the
fans love it when theres a real close
race.

SAY A PRAYER
The other night I was out in the
community, and the sirens began
to scream in the darkness of the
night. And at first, when I heard
them, as I often do, I flinched. Because if those services are being
called out, it means something
has happened, someone needs
help, and something potentially
dangerous or tragic is unfolding.
But then I remembered something
someone told me, long ago, when
they had needed the services of
the local ambulances.
When I hear sirens, I know
help is on the way, and that any
chance for a positive or better
outcome, will come through
them.
That changed my perceptions a
lot. Now, when I hear the sirens,
I stop and pray a little prayer of
thanks. For the officers, RCMP,
County and Strathmore Constabulary who are out there striving
to keep peace and order in our
community, giving us security
and safety. I pray for the EMT
and Paramedics who respond
to medical situations with such
professional and capable abilities
to care for someone in need, and
to support the families or friends
standing anxiously along side. I
pray for the firefighters in those
big red vehicles maneuvering

The Strathmore Reds bantam double A baseball team got a glimpse of what it is like to compete at a provincial tournament over the weekend in Lacombe.
The young team began the tournament with a
battle against the Lacombe Dodgers. The Reds
started the game out very well, but it all went
down hill after starting pitcher, Hunter Biskup,
kept the game scoreless until the bottom of the
second where the Dodgers made him pay. Jack
Sauve came in relief and pitched really well, but
the Reds struggled to get their bats going.
The team got some offence from, most notably,
Game MVP Joe Furfaro who went three-for-three
with four RBIs, and Kadin Wilson who went
two-for-three cashing in two runs, but unfortunately that wasnt enough as the Dodgers won
15-5.
The boys knew going into Saturday that they
had to win two games to have a chance at playing at semi-finals on Sunday.
The Reds showed an immense amount of
character in all situations, never showed any sign
of giving up, said Coach Darin Dunlop.
They were able to forget the debacle in Game
1, getting strong pitching from Connor Dunlop
as they kept the Red Deer Braves in check, only
allowing four hits over five innings. Ryan Orford
led the way offensively going two-for-three with
a double, while Nathan Bogstie pitched to perfection in relief to beat the Braves 11-3.
In the afternoon game, the club found themselves down 3-0 early to the Spruce Grove Sox,
but countered with five straight runs to take a
5-3 lead.
However, the Sox would come back with two

in the third and one in the fourth to take a 6-5
lead, but Reds would score five in the fifth inning to take a 10-6 lead and never looked back
to take the game 12-6.
That set the team up for a date with the Camrose Royals in the semi-finals. Ben Slemp broke
out of a slump going three-for-four on the afternoon with a dinger and four RBIs, but that
wasnt enough. Camroses bats proved to be too
much as the eventual provincial champs won
convincingly 14-2.
This Reds team has showed enormous improvement and grit throughout the season, said
Dunlop. The Strathmore community should be
proud of these young men and women as they
are and will be a positive influence on the Strathmore community for years to come.
As for the mosquito 1 double-A Reds, they
went 1-2 at provincials in Wetaskiwin over the
August long weekend, but considering that they
didnt medal, Coach Jeff Stender thought strong
pitching was the strength of the team.
The boys did extremely well, said Stender.
Our pitching was extremely strong from the
start of the season to the end of the season. The
pitching kept us in the first game, kept us in the
second game and we had one pitcher throw a
complete game in the one we won.
The boys lost the first one 12-11 to Sherwood
Park, the second one 32-17 to Olds and the victory was 11-4 over Grande Prairie.
Meanwhile, the midget triple-A Reds were in
Red Deer over the weekend and opened up with
an 11-9 win over the Okotoks Dawgs before
dropping consecutive losses to the Red Deer
Braves were defeated in the quarterfinals by the
Calgary Redbirds.
Nightingale to unveil new sports court

The Hamlet of Nightingale is set to open a
$43,000 multi-sport, all-year-round facility to accommodate area residents who will have the opportunity to use the court for a variety of sports
without having to travel to nearby Strathmore or
Calgary.
We have lots of kids using the playground and
are starting to get to the age where they can start
getting more out of additional facilities, said Chantelle Jacobs, member of the board for Nightingale. Its a nice feature addition for adults as well.
The set-up will allow for sports such as basketball, volleyball, pickleball, badminton and alternative racquet and ball games, while in the winter it
will become an ice rink.

We just wanted it to be versatile as possible,
said Jacobs. Everybody was excited about it from
the beginning. It was just a matter of obtaining all
the funding and we were able to qualify for some
grants.
The only other fundraising that has to be done
is for the fencing; where if you donate, youll receive a tax-deductible receipt back.
The grand opening will feature lots of sporting
events for all ages, and food and drinks.
There is going to be a three-on-three basketball
tournament, there will be additional games on the
playground, bocce ball, activities for everybody of
all ages, said Jacobs.
The festivities will take place on Aug. 15 from
1-4 p.m., at the Nightingale Community Hall.

The CFR Chemicals Bisons are proudly honouring fallen teammate Markus
Lavallee with a memorial hockey tournament in a two-day showcase at the
Strathmore Family Centre.
Bisons General Manager Wayne Hansen is excited that many players are
coming together from around the area
to play in Lavallees memory.
I can tell you that none of this
wouldnt have happened without a
conversation with Derek and Shantelle (Markuss parents), said Hansen.
This tournament is going ahead with
their blessings and theyre very pleased
to see the response. The fact that this
tournament was announced eight days
ago makes me very happy to know its
going to sell out that quick.
The tournament will attract many
skilled players from the Western Hockey League (WHL), Junior A, Midget AAA
and other elite levels of hockey that
should provide great entertainment to
fans in attendance over the two days.
This a really good chance for them
with no pressure to come out, play
hockey at a high level and have some
fun for a great cause, said Hansen.
He termed the tournament as HighEnd Pond Hockey and that players
will be out there showing skills they
wouldnt do in a normal game situation.

The tournament support has been
tremendous from the off-ice officials
and other people donating their time,
and the Town of Strathmore for their
efforts in preparation for the tournament.
They havent told us officially, it
looks like they may be donating the
ice for the event, which is fantastic because its more money that goes into
the scholarship fund, said Hansen.
According to former teammate Josh
Bishop, there would be no better way
to celebrate Lavallees life than this
tournament because he was a player
that spent a lot of time at the arena.
He was a kid that always loved to
be around the rink, said Bishop. Just
being around the rink will bring back
memories of the great times that we
had with Markus.
Spots are filling up fast for the tournament as there are only eight spots
left and the goalie spots are full.
The cost is $100 per player and all
the money goes towards the scholarship.
The tournament will played on Aug.
15-16 at the Strathmore Family Centre
with games going from 10 a.m. to 4:30
p.m. both days.

Riders from all over Alberta had an absolute blast
at the third annual Ride Dogs Ride Poker Run on
Aug. 1. The festivities took place at the Funny
Farm and included a Honey Im Home race,
the Weiney bikes, tire pulls, slow races and fast
races.

Riders from the Siksika Nation and
Wheatland County will join together to
remember those with cancer while raising
funds for the Alberta Cancer Foundation
during the first annual Blackfoot Crossing
Cancer Ride.
The ride is a spin-off of the successful
Innisfail Trail Ride Against Cancer, which
has been running for 27 years and sees
about 300 riders a year.
Rhonda Leger, one of the co-coordinators of the event, decided to bring this
ride for a worthy cause here to Southern Alberta. The event will help to raise
money for the Alberta Cancer Foundation
for their many ventures. Some of the ventures include the completion of the Foundations new facilities in Drumheller and
Lethbridge as well as their new project
where they go out to communities to visit
with patients who are unable to leave for
their treatment.
For Leger the ride is about more than
just raising money. As a 10-year survivor
of breast cancer, she feels it will also be
about recovery, as there will be a blessing
given at the beginning of the ride.
It is also a ride to heal because the
blessing is been done to heal us and try
take away those burdens, said Leger.
Its to reflect on what Mother Nature has
done and all the damage she has done
in the floods because we are riding along
where it had been flooded out.
The starting point of the ride will be
at the original signing of Treaty Seven at
Blackfoot Crossing and at that site, they
want to plant a tree to honour those that
have been lost to cancer, as well as survivors.
The chief of council, the Indian Princess and representatives from the Alberta
Cancer Foundation will join the ride.
The trail will go along the Bow River
where riders can enjoy the entertainment
of local artists and can participate in little competitions such as the best-dressed
horse or the youngest rider.
The night will end with a round dance
and some traditional food of fry bread on
a stick and burgers, berry soup and mint
tea.
Eulalia Running Rabbit, the other event
coordinator, said they are hoping to get
a lot of support for the ride and they already had plenty of good feedback and
support from both Siksika Nation and the
outside.
The ride is open to anyone; those wanting to partake can call Leger at 403-4999733 to register. Owners can register their
horses for $20 and wagon rides are $30.
Those wanting to go on the wagons are
urged to pre-register so the organizers
know how many people are coming.
Leger also invites those who want to
perhaps watch to come down and enjoy
while reminding those that donate over
$20 will receive a receipt for tax purposes.
