Seven habits of effective speaker

Every orator wants to become an effective speaker. Who can become a good speaker? An effective
speaker must hold some qualities in him to make his speech effective. Not everyone can become a good
speaker. It needs special skills and talents. Few people will have the talent and knowledge to deliver a
speech, but he /she cannot be effective because they may lack the techniques that an effective speaker
needs. Lets now discuss few tips that are required for an effective speaker.

1. Understand your audience

Read the mind of your audience before you start your speech. Find out as much as you can about your
audience before preparing your speech. Try to deliver fresh and new information for your audience. Do
not bore your audience by delivering the same message. Do not repeat the sentences that you are using.
Try to understand the logic in your speech before your start to speak. Use appropriate language to suit
your audience, i.e. if your audience are children below 10 then you may include small jokes and wits. If
you are talking to your colleagues then you may use more technical terms.

2. Adequate preparation is must:

An effective speaker must come well prepared. His /her preparation must be adequate and must fit the
time allotted to you. Either your speech should not be too short or too long. So, collect sufficient materials
and organize them and prepare well. Avoid redundancy in your speech. While concluding your speech,
conclude mentioning the benefits of your topic.

3. Prepare a user friendly final draft:

Always keep a copy of your final draft, so that you dont need to worry about till the last moment. For
example, if you miss your briefcase that contains your speech, you need not worry about that because
you have a copy of your final draft ready in hand.

4. Practice well:
Practice your speech well until you become confident. Even if you get interrupted in the middle you should
be able to continue it from the place you stopped. Practice with the same voice, language, tone which you
will use it on the stage. Prepare yourself, in such a way that you should be able to clarify the doubts of
your audience.

5. Arrive in time:
Arrive to the spot in time. This will reduce your tension and you will get time to recollect your points once
again. Arriving early will help to interact with your audience well in advance and you can be aware of the
mind set up of your audience.

6. Speech delivery methods:

To make your audience attentive you should follow good verbal, visual and vocal aspects in your speech.
A good and quality verbal usage must be there in your speech. Usage of a good visual contact with your
audience makes them clear with the points that you are expressing. A good vocal usage makes the
audience attentive and brisk while your talk is going on.

7. Answering to the questions:

Be prepared to answer to your audience finally. Try to answer to the doubts asked by the audience. Note
down the questions asked by them and make use of it in your next talk.
