At launch, the service had two innovations which set it ahead of the other search engines;
It used a fast, multi-threaded crawler (Scooter) which could cover many more Web pages
than were believed to exist at the time and an efficient search running back-end on
advanced hardware. As of 1998, it used 20 multi-processor machines using DEC's 64-bit
Alpha processor. Together, the back-end machines had 130 GB of RAM and 500 GB of
hard disk space, and received 13 million queries per day. This made AltaVista the first
searchable, full-text database of a large part of the World Wide Web. The distinguishing
feature of AltaVista was its minimalistic interface compared with other search engines of
the time; a feature which was lost when it became a portal, but was regained when it
refocused its efforts on its search function.

4.Explain the meaning of Netiquette

Common rules for e-mail and USENET such as avoiding flamewars and spam are
constant across most mediums and communities. Another rule is to avoid typing in all
caps or grossly enlarging script for emphasis, which is considered to be the equivalent of
shouting or yelling. Other commonly shared points, such as remembering that one's posts
are (or can easily be made) public, are generally intuitively understood by publishers of
[7]

Web pages and posters to USENET, although this rule is somewhat flexible depending on
the environment. On more private protocols, however, such as e-mail and SMS, some
users take the privacy of their posts for granted. One-on-one communications, such as
private messages on chat forums and direct SMSs, may be considered more private than
other such protocols, but infamous breaches surround even these relatively private media.
For example, Paris Hilton's Sidekick PDA was cracked in 2005, resulting in the
publication of her private photos, SMS history, address book, etc.

which e-mail server computer systems accept, forward, deliver and store messages on
behalf of users, who only need to connect to the e-mail infrastructure, typically an e-mail
server, with a network-enabled device for the duration of message submission or
retrieval. Originally, e-mail was always transmitted directly from one user's device to
another's; nowadays this is rarely the case.

redundancy because broadband Internet connections were only starting to proliferate.
