An ethical bank, also known as a social, alternative, civic, or sustainable bank, is a bank concerned with the
social and environmental impacts of its investments and loans. The ethical banking movement includes:
ethical investment, impact investment, socially responsible investment, corporate social responsibility, and is
also related to such movements as the fair trade movement, ethical consumerism, and social enterprise.
Other areas, such as fair trade, have comprehensive codes and regulations to which all industries that wish to
be certified as fair trade must adhere. Ethical banking has not developed to this point; because of this it is
difficult to create a concrete definition distinguishing exactly what it is that sets an ethical bank apart from
conventional banks. Ethical banks are regulated by the same authorities as traditional banks and have to abide
by the same rules. While there are differences between ethical banks, they do share a common set of
principles, the most prominent being transparency and social and/or environmental aims of the projects they
finance. Ethical banks sometimes work with narrower profit margins than traditional ones, and therefore they
may have few offices and operate mostly by phone, Internet, or mail. Ethical banking is considered one of
several forms of alternative banking.
History
Mainstream financial banks have had varying relationships with Corporate Social Responsibility and ethical
investment. However, a clearer movement has emerged since the 1990s. With changing social demands, and
as more is known about the effects that banks can have through their lending policies, banks have begun to
feel pressure from the general public, NGOs, governments, regulatory bodies and others to consider their
social and environmental impact. For example, in the mid-1990s the Cooperative Bank asked 6,000 customers
what their thoughts
were on ethical
banking;

responded that it

The policy initiatives from Bangladesh Bank on Sustainable Banking are discussed as follows.
Corporate Social Responsibility
June 2008: Comprehensive circular titled Mainstreaming Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in banks and
financial institutions in Bangladesh.
Bangladesh Bank anticipated from banks- Embracing CSR in the management attitude and regular operations
along with broad-based initiatives and exhaustive stakeholder involvement would fetch strategic longer run
competitive advantage for banks and financial institutions in Bangladesh.

Bangladesh Bank publishes CSR review report annually since 2010. Four issues of the report have come into
light- April 2010, July 2011, July 2012 and August 2013.
Green Banking and Environmental Risk Management
BB has introduced detailed Guidelines on Environmental Risk Management (ERM) in 2011 with a view to
encouraging banks and financial institutions to consider the environmental factors through a structured
fashion in the overall credit appraisal process.
In the same year, BB issued Policy Guidelines for Green Banking to promote and mainstream green banking
into banking business.
Observing the responses from banks, a uniform reporting format was designed and issued to banks in 2012.
In 2013, Policy Guidelines for Green Banking was replicated for FIs and banks scheduled in 2013.
Policy Guidelines on Green Banking is segregated into three phases:
Phase-1: Policy and Governance, Incorporation of ERM in CRM, In-house Environment
Management, Green finance, Climate Risk Fund, Green Marketing, Online Banking, Training, R&D;
Phase-2: Sector Specific Environmental Policies, Green Strategic Planning, Green Branches, Bank
Specific Environmental Risk Management Plan;
Phase-3: Innovative Products, GRI.
Bangladesh Bank is working in collaboration with IFC to upgrade the ERM framework. The targeted
outcomes is- Upgraded ESRM framework by incorporating Social Risk, A rigorous quantitative monitoring
tool, Sector Specific Environmental Policies for at least 12 sectors, Framework for bank specific ERM plan.

Conclusion
The current status overall of sustainable banking in Bangladesh cant be said is at a good position but in a
promising position. Hopefully Bangladesh can obtain its target soon enough for the sake of its countryman.
