1.0 SCOPE
This painting procedure shall be used for under ground piping works for
370 MW GAS BASED COMBINED CYCLE POWER PROJECT-UTRAN
2.0
REFERENCE
METHODOLOGY
3.1
SURFACE PREPARATION
The surface shall be cleaned by mechanical cleaning (Wire Brush/Buffing for
Field joints only) method prior to application of coating material to remove all
foreign particles & material e.g.greese/oil etc. Cleaning shall be checked by
visually.
3.2
COAT APPLICATION
Primer shall be applied immediately after cleaning the surface.
Primer is cold applied primer & is applied by brush @min. 150gms/sqm.
After application of primer it is allowed to dry until the surface become
tacky.
Primer coat shall be uniform & free from floods, runs, sags, drips, or
bare spots.
The time interval between the application of primer & coat shall be
10 to 15minutes.
After the application of primer, the membrane tape is applied over the
pipe in round fashion under slight tension by thermo fusion process. A
LPG torch or other heat source is applied onto inner face of the tape till
the polymeric mix attains a shiny appearance & tape compound is
softened. The tape is then adhered to the primed coated surface.
Overlaps are maintained as per specifications with a minimum of 15 to
20 mm.The overlaps are doubly sealed by thermo fusion.
The welded field joints & uncoated areas overlapping of tapes on each
side shall be 50mm.

4.0
INSPECTION
All coated & wrapped pipes shall be subjected to test with Holiday Detector.
For pipe with pre fabricated tape, the test voltage will be 15kv for 4mm thk.
Coating.
The operating voltage of the detector shall be determined by
NACE RP-02-74.
4.1
PEEL TEST
The temperature of the tape & pipe to be tested shall be between 10C to 27C.
If the temperature is outside the range hot or cold water shall be poured over
the test area until this temperature range is attained.
A test area shall be selected by the inspector where the tape is smooth for
15cm in the longitudinal direction of the tape. Two knife cuts that are 15cm
long & 5cm apart shall be made through the tape.
A flat blade shall be used to pry up 5cm of the fabric. This 5cm flap of fabric
shall be grasped firmly in one hand & shall be pulled with a quick motion in
the direction of the remaining 10cm of the 15cm knife cut.
The adhesion is satisfactory if the taps tears at the point of stripping or the
fabric strips from the underlying coal tar component, leaving exposed not
more than 10 percentage of the primer or metal.
