*SAREX NOTE- This is to officially announce a SAREX scheduled for 15-16 Feb at Davison AAF. While the item has been on the
calendar for month and months, the recent stand down of the Ops Center caused us to pause for a bit until we understood what
alternate posture or new normal we could develop. Much of that has fallen into place, but there will still be growing pains. However,
all if sufficiently firm to proceed with this planned SAREX. Mission will be executed as a TASK type mission given the number of
moving parts already in process. After our new normal is normalized, we can return to SCENARIO training. This is why you have a
2 week vice a 4 week notice
Register for the SAREX at the following URL: http://dcsarexfeb14.eventbrite.com/

BLACK HISTORY MONTH NOTES:

FIRST AFRICAN AMERICAN CIVIL AIR PATROL UNIT- DETROIT, MI. Turned down by white squadrons in Detroit, Loving and
fellow pilot Earsly Taylor received authorization to form the all-African-American unit Civil Air Patrol Squadron 639-5. Executive

officer Neal (second from left), commanding officer Earsly (far right) and their all-black CAP squadron trained with the help of a used
Waco and Loving's second glider (behind, right). The planes were owned by another new venture: the Wayne Aircraft Company,
begun by Loving and Taylor. (From the Special Collections and Archives, Wright State University)

LT WILLA BROWN- FIRST AFRICAN AMERICAN FEMALE CAP OFFICER AND AVIATOR- When she decided to learn to fly, she
studied with Cornelius R. Coffey, a certified flight instructor and expert aviation mechanic at one of Chicago's racially segregated
airports. She earned her private pilot's license in 1938. Later, Brown and Coffey married and established the Coffey School of
Aeronautics at Harlem Airport in Chicago, where they trained black pilots and aviation mechanics.
Together with Cornelius Coffey and Enoch P. Waters, Willa Brown helped form the
National Airmen's Association of America in 1939, whose main goal was to get black
aviation cadets into the United States military. She continually lobbied the
government for integration of black pilots into the segregated Army Air Corps and the
federal Civilian Pilot Training Program (CPTP), the system established by the Civil
Aeronautics Authority to provide a pool of civilian pilots for use during national
emergencies. Subsequently, when Congress finally voted to allow separate-butequal participation of blacks in civilian flight training programs, the Coffey School of
Aeronautics was chosen for participation in the CPTP.
Brown became the coordinator for the CPTP in Chicago. Later, her flight school was
also selected by the U.S. Army to provide black trainees for the Air Corps pilot
training program at the Tuskegee Institute.
Willa Brown eventually became the coordinator of war-training service for the Civil
Aeronautics Authority and later was a member of the Federal Aviation
Administration's Women's Advisory Board. She was the first black female officer in
the Civil Air Patrol and the first black woman to hold a commercial pilot's license in
the United States.

FROM THE COMMANDER

My comments for this month will be short, hard hitting and to the point.
This past month, I briefed our Strategic Plan for 2014 to the squadron, which is our roadmap for where we want to go and where we
want to be as a unit for this calendar year. As we execute the Strategic Plan and Monthly Emphasis Items that will drive our
schedule for 2014, I will leave with you three salient quotations from the briefing (youve heard them many times before):
If you want to see the results, you have to do the work.
You will only get as much out of CAP as you put into it.
Make an investment in CAP and reap the benefits.
If you want to compete, you have to show up.
Be prepared to support our efforts with best effort each day and a continued pursuit of excellence!
