Pay: The appointment will be on UCL Grade 7. The salary range will be
37,152 to 40,313 per annum (pro rata), inclusive of London Allowance.
Reports to: Director, School of European Language, Culture and Society.
The UCL School of European Studies, Culture and Society invites
applications for the post of Language Convenor & Teacher. The successful
candidate will be expected to take up the position on 1 September 2015,
or as soon as possible thereafter.
The Department of Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies at
UCL houses specialists in Hispanic, Portuguese and Latin American
literature, film and culture. The Department offers BA degrees in Hispanic
Studies, Latin American Studies, Spanish with Management, and Spanish
with Film Studies, along with a number of combined language degrees,
including a BA in Portuguese and another modern language. At
postgraduate level the Department offers an MA in Language, Culture and
History: Hispanic Studies, and doctoral training in several fields.
The post holder will teach 300 hours of Spanish grammar classes at
undergraduate level (second and final year) and 50 hours of Spanish oral
classes at undergraduate level (second and final year). He or she will be
required to mark and assess work completed for these and, at the
discretion of the Head of Department, other courses, assist in the
preparation of timed examination papers to be taken in the summer term,
participate in oral examinations, direct the Departments Spanish

language teaching provision, hold office hours, attend meetings


concerning the courses that he or she teaches, and complete mandatory
training requirements that he or she may, in accordance with UCL policy,
need to take. The salary specified above includes pay for undertaking
these duties.
Applicants should ideally have a postgraduate qualification or equivalent,
and teaching experience at a higher educational institution.
The postholder will be expected to participate in Departmental events and
contribute to the intellectual life of the department.
Main duties and responsibilities:

Prepare and deliver undergraduate content courses as allocated by


the Head of Department or Director of the School; set and mark
assignments and exams as required.

Act as Departmental language coordinator.

Co-ordinate teaching methods and assessment for the four years of

the Departments UG language programme.


Organise meetings with language tutors to ensure consistency of

approach, quality and materials.


Supervise the quality of language courses and teaching (e.g. Peer

Observation of Teaching).
Update the Departments Moodle language-learning facilities at the

beginning of each academic year.


Respond to queries from students and tutors.
Prepare Annual Monitoring reports based on student evaluation

questionnaires.
Proofread and approve first drafts of exam papers.

Assess the language competence of students requesting a transfer


of their degree programme.

Attend course-planning meetings as deemed necessary by the Head


of Department or Director of the School.

Hold office hours.

Keep attendance registers and mark-books in accordance with


departmental guidelines on good practice.

Participate in oral examinations.

Complete mandatory training courses that may be required to


comply with UCL policy for teaching fellows.

Actively follow UCL policies, including Equal Opportunities.

Observe fire and health and safety regulations.

Carry out any other duties commensurate with the grade and
purpose of the post as may be reasonably required by the Head of
the Spanish and Latin American Studies Department in consultation
with the Director of the School of European Languages, Culture and
Society.

Person Specification
1. Knowledge
Essential:

Expert knowledge in the area of Hispanic Studies (Spanish language


and linguistics).

Complete fluency in Spanish and in English.

2. Skills
Essential:

Teaching experience at undergraduate level and other forms of


public presentation.

Ability to supervise academic work by undergraduates.

Familiarity with online learning technologies.

Ability to manage time and work to strict deadlines.

Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.

3. Qualifications
Essential:

Postgraduate qualification or equivalent within the area of Hispanic


Studies or Linguistics.
