Al-Toukhi company for Industry & Trading has been awarded


turnkey contract for Open Cycle Gas Turbine based CPS expansion
project at Rafha of Saudi Electric Company-Eastern Operation Area
(SEC-EOA), Saudi Arabia.
The project consists of design, engineering, procurement,
installation, testing and commissioning of two (2) Nos. 29.92MW @
50C, Gas Turbine Generator unit of GE make along with associated

DESIGN BASIS:

4.1

Lighting system

4.1.1 The lighting system shall comprise the following two (2) categories:
a)

Normal 127V AC Lighting System


Emergency DC Lighting System

4.1.2 Normal 127V AC Lighting System


In this system, the lighting circuits shall be fed by normal AC supply
through 3 phase, 4 wire lighting distribution boards. All the lighting
fixtures connected to this system shall be available as long as supply is
available from normal source through 480V/220V lighting transformer.
4.1.3 DC & Emergency Lighting System
i)

DC Emergency Lighting :
DC Emergency lights would be fed from DC emergency lighting
panel, which in turn will be fed from 125V station DC distribution
board.(DCDB)
These DC emergency lights would be provided in all rooms with
a facility for manual switching in each room.
Emergency lighting main supply would be automatically
switched on in the event of normal AC lighting failure.

ii)

Exit Lighting :
Exit Light with self contained sealed lead acid rechargeable
standby batteries suitable for 90 minutes illumination and
charger circuit, connected to a dedicated 127Vac-branch circuit,
shall be provided near all the exit doors.

iii)

Emergency Lighting
This shall be provided by emergency lighting fixtures located
strategically in critical operating area and emergency exits.
These lights shall be ON all the time, normally from the normal
AC supply. In case of failure of normal AC system, these lights
shall be energised from the DC supply obtained from integrated

rechargeable batteries through automatic switching. The change


over in the reverse direction will also be automatic. The duration
of emergency lighting shall be 3 hours.
4.2

Main Lighting Distribution Board(MLDB) and Sub Lighting Distribution


Boards(SLDB)

4.2.1 The Main Lighting Distribution board would be provided with two MCCB
controlled incomers and a MCCB controlled Bus coupler with Auto
Changeover scheme. Both the incomers would be fed through
480V/220V dry type lighting transformers, Dyn11 with off circuit taps
5% in steps of 2.5%. The lighting transformer shall be cast resin dry
type and shall be housed in the incomer panel.
The main lighting distribution board located in Main Switchgear building
fed from the 480V Sub Distribution board consist of 2 nos of MCCB
controlled incoming feeders and MCBs controlled 3 phase 4 wire
outgoing feeders feeding Sub Lighting Distribution Boards(SLDB) for
the following areas.

4.2.2 The Sub Lighting Distribution Boards (SLDB) shall have :


a)

1 No. 3 phase 4 wire incoming feeder controlled by earth


leakage circuit breaker and number of single-phase outgoing
circuits controlled by MCBs. This feeder arrangement is used to
feed all the indoor lighting system.

b)

SLDBs feeding street lighting and outdoor area lighting will be


provided with three phase outgoing feeder circuits controlled by
MCBs.

be provided with contactors for control from a remote point.


Automatic switching ON/OFF of these circuits shall be done
through timers/photo cell.
4.2.3 Lighting fixtures in indoor areas shall be controlled from the respective
SLDBs.
4.2.3 Individual control in office rooms shall be through single pole flush type
switches / MCBs.
4.2.5. The distribution of lighting fixtures/receptacles shall be such that the
loading on each phase of the SLDB is approximately equal.
4.2.6 125V DC emergency lighting fixture would be fed through separate DC
emergency lighting panels which in turn are fed from 125V DC
Distribution Boards.
4.3.

The illumination levels required for various buildings in the plant viz.;
GTG building, Main switchgear room, Battery room, & outdoor
area/streets would be selected as per Cl.No: 6.20.15 of PTS-1022
page 251 of 336 as given below.

4.3.2 The types of luminaires selected are based on the mounting height.
a)

If the mounting height is equal to or less than 4 mtrs, then


fluorescent type luminaires are selected.

b)

If the mounting height is between 6 mtrs & 4 mtrs then the low
bay type fixtures are selected.

c)

If the mounting height is between 8 mtrs & 6 mtrs, then medium


bay type fixtures are selected.

d)

For all mounting height greater than 8 mtrs, high bay type
fixtures are selected.

e)

For street lighting, pole mounted streetlight type luminaires are


used.

f)

The street lighting pole height is maintained as 8 mtrs, and for


area lighting, a pole height of 10mtrs is adopted.

Lamps & Luminaires:

4.4.1 Outdoor lighting

i)

High Pressure sodium vapour & High pressure mercury vapour


lamp shall be generally outdoor weather proof and dust proof
type with degree of protection IP 55 suitable for conduit
mounting.

ii)

The luminaire may be provided with integral mounted control


accessories

Street Lighting Luminaires


250 watts High pressure sodium vapour lamps shall be provided with
integral controlgear.

4.4.3 Fluorescent Luminaires


1.

These luminaires shall be generally industrial type provided with


cold rolled cold annealed (CRCA) sheet steel channel / rail cum
reflector housing complete with all electrical control accessories
mounted on it. The finish shall be stove enamelled.

Luminaires shall be suitable for the number of lamps of specified


wattage (generally 1 or 2 lamps of 40W), direct mounting on
ceiling / wall/ column pendant mounting.

Low loss electronic ballasts shall be provided for all


fluorescent lamp luminaires.

4.4.4 Bulk head luminaire:


The luminaire shall be robust construction, cast aluminium / vitreous
enamelled housing, heat and shock resistant prismatic or clear glass
cover fixed with neoprene gaskets for sealing. For mechanical
protection to the glass cover, round steel wire guard with vitreous
enamelled finish shall be provided. The luminaire shall be suitable for
incandescent lamp upto 150 watts, for direct mounting to ceiling / wall /
column and is used for general-purpose indoor lighting.
4.4.5 Lamps
Lamps shall be capable of withstanding small vibrations and the
connections at lead in wires and filaments / electrodes shall not break
under such circumstances.
a)

Incandescent lamps
General lighting service (GLS) lamps shall be tungsten filament
incandescent type. The filament shall be coiled coil type rated
for 127 volts, single phase AC.

b)

Gas Discharge Lamps


(I)

Fluorescent Lamps
Fluorescent lamp luminaires shall be with low wattage
consumption, high efficiency and longer burning life.
Lamps shall be of warm white or cool day light type with
triband phosphor coated type, suitable for operation on
127V, single phase AC, in standard lengths of 1200mm.

(II)

High Intensity Discharge Lamps


These lamps include the high pressure sodium vapour
lamp operating at 127V

polycrystalline translucent, coated discharge tube, coated

shell, quick restrike time (of within 5 minutes) in standard


ratings upto 400 watts would be used.
4.5

Sockets (Power Receptacles)

4.5.1 One (1) number 3 phase, 480 V AC, 200A, outdoor power receptacle
complete with male/female connector assembly with a fuse disconnect
switch/MCCB housed in weather proof IP54 enclosure, shall be
provided at the Main generator transformer bays for power supply to oil
treatment/filtration equipment. This would be fed from 480V Station
switchgear.
4.5.2 One (1) number 127V AC, 20A, galvanised finish IP54 weather proof
steel clad receptacle/outlets with spring flap cover shall be provided on
each lighting pole and transformer area for supplying power to
inspection lamps. All these receptacles shall be fed from AC lighting
panels.
4.5.3 Sufficient 480 V AC, 60A, 3 phase weather proof, IP54 welding
receptacles shall be provided at approved strategic locations and within
30 meters from power transformers and shall be mounted on structure
or equipment supporting columns. These shall be fed from the main LV
AC distribution boards.
4.5.4 127V, 60 Hz, 3 pin Power Receptacles shall be provided in all
building/areas of the plant. Inside a building, receptacles shall be
provided at interval of 10-15m or part there of for hand tools, water
coolers, exhaust fans etc. Inside each plant area, minimum two
receptacles shall be provided and the same shall be indoor/outdoor as
per the location. These receptacles would be fed from lighting panels.
4.5.5 Receptacle units shall consist of socket outlet with associated switch
and plug. The socket outlet and switch or MCB shall be flush mounted
within a stove enamelled/ galvanised 1.2-mm thick CRCA sheet steel
enclosure. The box may be recessed into or mounted on a wall/column
made of RCC, brick, or steel as per the location in a standard
arrangement.
4.5.6 The outdoor type receptacles shall be housed in a 2 mm thick CRCA
sheet steel epoxy painted enclosure with gaskets, hinged door having
locking arrangement. The enclosure shall be with rain canopy and
removable gland plate entry from bottom. Composite receptacle with
switch modules housed in a box shall be with degree of protection IP

Indoor Lighting
The recommended values of illumination level for various areas in the
plant as indicated would be followed for estimating the number of
lighting fixtures. Following factors would be considered while arriving
at the utilisation factor to determine the number of fixtures for each
area/buildings in the plant.

The reflectance of the floor, wall, & ceiling would be taken based on the
type of floor, roof, & ceiling finishes present in the respective buildings
The working plane would be considered at 0.85 m from the floor level.
The suspension height for suspended fixtures would not exceed 1
meter.
The emergency lighting system shall provide average maintained
illumination level of 10 lux measured at the floor.

Outdoor Lighting
The recommended illumination levels for outdoor areas are 50 Lux for
roads, 20 for transformer area.
Mounting height, spacing of area/street lights shall be based on lamp
wattage, uniformity of illumination and vertical angles.
Maintenance factor shall be generally 0.6 under average conditions.
For outdoor lighting i.e. around the buildings provision to be made with
150W outdoor type flood light type lamps mounted on wall.
Automatic switching ON/OFF shall be through timers/photo cells.

5.3

Calculation for Number of fitting


The following formula per lumen method shall be used for general
lighting to estimate the quantity of fixture (N) needed to illuminate the
indoor areas:

Alternatively, Sub vendors software would be used for calculating the


number of fixtures and the outputs of the software would be furnished
along with the layouts.
5.4

Lighting circuit design


In an area, the lighting fixtures would be arranged in different phases
such that even in case one lighting phase is faulty, complete lighting
is not affected.

The circuit loading on each circuit shall be restricted to 80% of the


MCB rating.
The voltage drop from SLDB and any fixture shall not exceed 3%.
5.5

Wires, cables, conduits and junction boxes

5.5.1 Conductor size for power receptacles and lighting circuits shall be
selected taking into consideration the voltage drop (as indicated
above), but in no case it shall be less than 4 mm 2 stranded copper.
5.5.2 Wires used for conduit point wiring of lighting fixtures/exhaust fans and
receptacles shall be 1100 V grade, PVC insulated, single core,
stranded copper conductor wires. In general, concealed wiring would
be adopted for Main switchgear building, etc. where RCC structure
exists. For GTG building etc. where steel structures are present,
exposed conduits would be used. Pull boxes would be provided near
light fittings & where conduit drops down to switch box.
5.5.3 All conduit wiring, concealed or exposed wiring shall have provision for
easy inspection. Exposed wiring when run along wall would be as near
the ceiling as possible. Due consideration would be given for neatness
and appearance.
5.5.4 Wires of different phases would be run in separate conduits. However,
wires of same phase but having different circuit nos. can be run in
same conduit. Wires of lighting and 3 phase power receptacles shall
be carried out in separate conduits and on separate circuits.
5.5.5 Wherever lighting system has three phase distribution, separate
conduits would be used for different phases. For easy identification of
phases and neutral wires the following colour wires shall be used.

5.5.6 All receptacles and switches to be installed in offices buildings would


be flush mounted within the wall and those in other areas would be wall
or column mounted.
5.5.7 Rigid PVC/galvanised sheet steel junction boxes with adequate
number of outlets/ways, suitable of the conduit entry would be provided

in the circuits wherever required. Grounding screw shall be provided in


each junction box.
5.5.8 In Main switchgear room the wires would be routed through Rigid PVC
conduits of minimum 25mm size concealed in wall.
5.5.9 GTG building and in other steel structured area the wires shall be
routed through Rigid galvanised steel conduits of minimum 25mm size
installed on wall surface/structures/ceiling surface.
5.5.10 The cables shall be routed through duct banks/ cable trenches inside
buildings as best suited. Outside, the cables shall be directly buried at
900mm below FGL, At the road crossing, these cables shall be routed
through 110mm dia. PVC conduits (directly buried at a depth of
750mm). Warning tile & tape shall be provided at 300mm above the
cable.
5.6

Earthing
All exposed metal parts of the plug, when the plug is in complete
engagement with the socket outlet, shall be in effective electrical
connection with the earthing pin.

5.7

Mounting
Socket outlets & welding receptacles shall be mounted at 750mm from
FFL.

5.8

Light Control Switches


Light control switches of ratings and types, i.e. decorative/industrial,
shall be used. The switches shall be suitable for use on 220/127 V, 1
phase, 60 Hz supply.
Switches shall be of flush type for mounting behind an insulated plate
or incorporated with a switch or switch box/suitable enclosure. The
switch box/ enclosure may be recessed into or mounted on wall as per
the requirements of project layouts.
Lighting switches and receptacles shall be modular type.
Light control switches where applicable, would be mounted at 1500mm
from FFL.

office room, where light control switches would be provided to control
the light fitting in that room..
