COURSE OVERVIEW
This is a core paper offered in first trimester of MBA program. The course provides a
comprehensive foundation for understanding the scope of information systems in a
business environment. It covers the fundamental concepts of understanding hardware and
software which includes network infrastructure, cloud computing and Big Data. The course
includes aspects related to Information Technology and Systems, Information system
design and development and security related aspects. It also elaborates the design of a
MIS solution for various business functions like production, marketing, finance, and human
resources.

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOME

The course enables students explore the way organizations leverage information
technology
and information systems for their business needs.
It helps students understand the impact of technology on business enterprises and
the deployment / utilization of information systems to gain competitive advantage.
The course enables students learn database-related aspects and its management.
It helps students plan, analyze and design information system solutions for various
functionalities of an organization.
It helps students understand the significance of information control and
management of safety and security issues in an organization.

9. LEARNING METHODOLOGY AND EXPECTATION FROM STUDENTS

Read the concerned chapter/portion as per session schedule before the class.
Interactive mode of learning/discussions during the class will be observed. Peer learning would
be achieved by this mode.
Individual analysis of cases, followed by group learning during the class hours using case study
method would be enabled. Students are expected to read the case study and preferably come
prepared to the class with a write up.

Review of research paper (CIA 1) - guidelines
1. Choose one research paper from the given area.
2. Student should read and study the research paper thoroughly before he/she attempts to write the
review. To understand the concepts mentioned in the selected research paper, the student may
have to refer to related articles and resources. Use references cited in the selected paper for this
purpose.
3. The review is to be submitted as a soft copy (MS Word or PDF). Please restrict the contents to 2
pages (600 words).
4. The student review should include the following:
(a) Student Name, Section and Register No
(b) Author(s), Title of the Paper, Journal name, volume, issue, year of publication and web link to
the paper.
(c) Brief introduction and structure of the paper.

(d) Research methodology used

(e) Major findings/ results
(f) Criticism - student's critical evaluation about the paper. This may include relevancy of the
subject, appropriateness of the research methodology used, findings/results been adequately
supported, gaps, contradictions, logical flow of the content etc.
5. Evaluation will be based on the following rubric (Out of 10 Marks):

Group presentation (CIA II1) guidelines
1. Each group would present on one of the identified topics (from the list provided above)
2. The topics provided for presentation by each group include learning areas indicated as selfearning modules in the course plan

3. While the presentation slides would be prepared by all students of a group together on the topic
identified for that group, the delivery of presentation would need to be done individually.
4. Each group would be allocated a time of 12 minutes for the presentation
5. Presentation slides would need to be prepared in accordance with the guidelines provided for
visual presentations in the academic standards hand-out (Page numbers 53 and 54)
6. Evaluation of presentations would be in accordance with the rubrics indicated for visual
presentations in the academic standards hand-out (Page numbers 55 and 56)
