1. Preface
1.1

General
Within so-called pipe classes, relevant components of piping systems are described,
specified, approved and harmonised to each other. Such components are e. g.:
straight pipes,
fittings - elbows, TEEs, reducers, caps
connection elements - flanges, bolts, gaskets
for relevant pipe classes also valves and strainers, and instrument piping, in case.
For all components tackled in pipe classes the following information should be provided to a
reasonable degree, if applicable:
material
pressure-temperature-rating (P-T-Rating)
dimensions
allowances
test condition
design codes
delivery codes
certification
service

1.2

Actual situation in the OMV facilities

Due to the different historical background of the various OMV facilities (e. g. due to national
regulation, code of practise, specific experience, project specific requirements), pipe classes
are also different from site to site. Furthermore, even the general philosophy behind the
existing pipe class systematic differs. Therefore compatibility is not granted and synergy
effects cannot be capitalised.

1.3

Scope
The intention of this manual is to provide guidance on creating standardised pipe classes by
defining the mandatory framework for establishing new pipe classes. Additionally provisions
are given how to implement and run the new pipe classes within OMV plants.
The new harmonised pipe classes are called Pipe Classes / Next Generation (PC/NG). The new
philosophy considers existing local field experience as well as general industrial development.
This manual aims to provide a framework for quality assurance and follow-up of activities,
tasks and work processes as well as detailed procedures and tools for planning, execution
and assessment related to pipe classes.
Following the considered aspects are shown:
Generation of OMV specific pipe classes
Specific evaluation of required information
Necessity and creation of relevant part description
Establishment of PC/NG on local production sites
Interfaces with existing piping systems

The process focuses on maintaining the mechanical integrity of piping systems and ensures:
Secure and quality-conscious handling by using approved and harmonised standards
Standardised design philosophies
Fastening of handling due to standardised components and warehousing
Reduction in time and money due to consistent interfaces to other departments (design
department, procurement, warehousing, maintenance) and in using standardised tools
(data base handling)
Managing and summarising the experience of the employees, also between different sites
Generally, the purpose is to ensure that clearly defined and accepted standards for piping
systems are achieved using resource efficient methods of design, procurement and
maintenance.

1.4

Personal organisation and responsibilities

The departments affected primarily are the engineering, the design and the maintenance
departments. However, PC/NG requires the commitment of various departments, also such as
procurement and warehousing as well as of the contractors and third party organisations.
The entire procedure is headed by the Center of Excellence. In Fig. 1 the overview of the
procedure is given:

The PC/NG documents shall be revised by the OMV PC/NG project team in reasonable
intervals.

1.5

Area of application
This OMV Pipe Class Manual (PC/M) is valid for all OMV operated (Schwechat, Burghausen,
Petrom refineries - Arpechim, Petrobrazi) and in the future projected sites. The manual can be
used by other OMV locations and subsidiary companies, as well.

1.6

Interfaces and restriction

The basic intention must be to get acceptance by the users of the PC/NG. Therefore the local
identification and the link to the already existing pipe class systems must be provided. That
means that the new PC/NG shall have a cross reference list to the already existing pipe
classes, which are no longer valid for new and existing piping.
Only for those piping systems, which are not (yet) covered by a new PC/NG, there are 3
principal possibilities:
project specific pipe classes - only with the approval of the CoE PC/NG process leader
use of old existing pipe class solutions
initiation of the development of a new PC/NG
Procedures have to be established to compensate for e.g.:
selection of pipe components in consideration of operation conditions / fluid
see OMV standard
detailed design of the routing and additional effects, like wind, earthquake, etc.
see OMV standard
correct manufacturing and testing of piping systems, like welding and NDT.
see OMV standard
adequate operation and maintenance (operating window)
see OMV standard
New PC/NG have to be in compliance with the applicable national and international legislative
requirements. Therefore, the applicability of the existing PC/NG have to be reassessed in case
of changes in the existing legislation and in case of new sites in new countries.

1.7

Compatibility with other approaches

Comparable standards for piping components are well-known tools in engineering
companies. There are approaches for pipe class standards, like DIN 2406 and PAS1057, but
these are different in details and priorities related to the branch of industry.
The herein defined procedure for PC/NG is in compliance with the general intentions provided
in the standards mentioned above.

2. Basic Design of OMV PC/NG

2.1

Objective
PC/NG is the approach to run into a systematic and OMV-wide procedure to manage piping
systems by the use of pipe classes. The OMV PC/NG process focuses on the integrity of the
piping components by the use of economic procedures.
The basic general philosophy for the PC/NG is described in the following:
by the PC/NG an OMV-wide basic systematic for pipe classes is established
basic design and approval philosophies shall result in a high quality piping
exchange of components, human resources, etc. between sites and consolidated
companies shall be simplified
OMV-wide procedures and tools, e.g. databases, shall be used, which are centrally
administered
the goal is to cover all relevant piping systems, however not every special piping system
within a plant will be covered
the acceptance of the new PC/NG shall be aspired due to easy use of the documents as
well as due to training of the staff

2.2

Affected piping
Aboveground piping of ferrous materials and underground systems for Slop, Cooling Water
and Rotsystems is the focus of the OMV PC/NG assessment.
The following kinds of piping systems, operating conditions and mechanical characteristics
are not covered:
Underground piping not mentioned paragraph above
Instrument piping
Headers and pipe systems at/within boilers, furnaces, vessels, reformer and heaters
Pipelines
Non-ferrous metal or plastic piping (needs separate considerations)
Internally lined piping systems
Double jacket piping systems
Steam trace heated piping systems (3/4)
Evaluation of the routing (stress analysis)
Additional loads, e.g. loads from impacts, supports, vibration, wind/snow.
Cyclic loads > 1000
Design in the range of creep rupture, besides mentioned explicitly
Vacuum

with respect to the relevant material group.

3.4

Temperature Range
The minimum / maximum design temperatures (temperature range) used in the PC/NG are
given in the following:
With the exception of the low temperature pipe classes, -10C is the generally used minimum
design temperature (see OMV standard). For the low temperature pipe classes specific
limitations are provided. For start-up / expansion procedures / low ambient conditions (shorttime procedures) the minimum design temperatures are -29C with reduced PressureTemperature-Rating according to the requirements of ASME B31.3, Fig. 323.2.2B.
The maximum temperature is determined considering the service limits of the ASME- and
