Grammar note for section 2a: a past participle is a form of the verb usually
ending in ed that indicates a completed action. The past participle can be an
adjective, ex: we had a heated argument, or part of a verb, ex: the stove has

heated the room. The past simple refers to the whole verb, ex: the stove
heated the room.
