Synopsls - Many feminlSt scholars have Idenufied ethnographlc methods as ideally SUlted to femimst research because Its contextual, experientlal approach to knowledge eschews the false duabsms
of posJtJvlsm and, drawmg upan such tradltJOnally female strengths as empathy and human
concern, allows for an egalitanan, reciprocal relauonship between knower and known. Thls paper
discusses the Irony that ethnographic methods also subJect research subJects to greater nsk of
explOltation, betrayal, and abandonment by the researcher than does much posltIVist research.
Fieldwork and Its textual products represent an mterventJon mto a system of relatJonshlps that the
researcher is far freer than the researched to leave. The paper calls for greater dialogue between
femmism and the new ethnography which addresses similar methodologlcal concerns and suggests
certam constramts on that dialogue.
