CIVIL ENGINEERING TRENDS

Education of civil engineering and the recognition of this important component of

the engineering have received relatively little attention although these could be
important parts in developing countries.

Todays status of civil engineering include the poor condition of the infrastructure in
many nations, the occurrence of corruption in the global engineering and
construction industry, the minimal involvement of civil engineers in the political
process, the need to more fully embrace sustainability, the globalization of
engineering practice, and the desire to attract the best and brightest to the
profession.
El estado de hoy de ingeniera civil incluye la condicin pobre de la infraestructura en muchas naciones, la
presencia de corrupcin en la ingeniera global y la industria de construccin, la participacin mnima de
ingenieros civiles en el proceso poltico, la necesidad de ms totalmente abrazar la sostenibilidad, la

I can see a very different world for civil engineers in 2025. An ever-increasing
global population that continues to shift to urban areas will require widespread
adoption of sustainability. Demands for energy, drinking water, clean air, safe waste
disposal, and transportation will drive environmental protection and infrastructure
development. Society will face increased threats from natural events, accidents,
and perhaps other causes such as terrorism.
Puedo ver un mundo muy diferente para ingenieros civiles en 2025. Una poblacin cada vez mayor global que
sigue cambiando a reas urbanas requerir la adopcin extendida de sostenibilidad. Las demandas de la
energa, el agua potable, el aire limpio, la recogida de basuras salva, y el transporte conducirn el desarrollo
de infraestructura y la proteccin de medio ambiente. La sociedad afrontar amenazas aumentadas de
acontecimientos naturales, accidentes, y quizs otras causas como el terrorismo.

Dealing with the preceding problems and opportunities will require intradisciplinary, cross-disciplinary, and multidisciplinary collaboration on projects and in
research and development. More advances in areas such as information
technology, intelligent infrastructure, and digital simulation will be needed.
Tratando con los problemas precedentes y oportunidades requerir la colaboracin intradisciplinaria, interdisciplinaria, y
multidisciplinar sobre proyectos y en la investigacin y desarrollo. Ms avances en reas como la tecnologa de la
informacin, la infraestructura inteligente, y la simulacin digital sern necesarios.

I am very proud of our legacy. During the past century, clean water supplies have
extended general life expectancies. Transportation systems serve as an economic
and social engine. New bridges, blending strength and beauty, speed transport and
bring communities closer together. Public and private construction, for which
engineers provide the essential underpinnings of design and project oversight,
produces hundreds of thousands of jobs and drives community development.
Yo estoy muy orgullosos de nuestra herencia. Durante el siglo pasado, provisiones limpias de agua han
ampliado expectativas de vida generales. Los sistemas de transporte sirven como un motor econmico y
social. Nuevos puentes, mezclando la fuerza y la belleza, la velocidad transporta y trae comunidades ms

But we cannot rest on our laurels. Current trends pose questions about the future
of the profession. These questions address the role that civil engineers play in
society, in the ultimate integrity of the worlds infrastructure, and in the health of the
natural environment.

For many years, civil engineering leaders sounded the alarm about the lack of
investment in maintaining and improving the infrastructure. Some of those
shortcomings were tragically illustrated by the death and destruction caused by
failures in which engineering designs, government funding, and the community
oversight systems were all called into question. Civil engineers are painfully aware

of the consequences for public health, safety, and welfare when the infrastructure
does not get the attention it requires.
Muchos aos, los lderes de ingeniera civil tocaron la alarma sobre la falta de inversin en el mantenimiento y el
mejoramiento de la infraestructura. Algunos de aquellos defectos trgicamente fueron ilustrados por la muerte y la
